My Father’s Business #7

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luke 2:49 KJV).

And, just what is the Lord Jesus’ Father’s “business?”

Luke chapter 4 contains the Lord Jesus Christ’s first sermon: “[16] And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. [17] And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, [18] The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, [19] To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. [20] And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. [21] And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

After years of Bible study, Christ ultimately recognized Isaiah chapter 61 applied directly to Him: “[1] The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; [2] To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; [3] To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”

Notice how Christ handled Isaiah, breaking off reading the passage exactly where it aligned with God’s current operations in Israel! He knew what His Heavenly Father was doing, and He was working in perfect tandem with Him….

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luke 2:49 KJV).

And, just what is the Lord Jesus’ Father’s “business?”

While 12-year-old Jesus listens to Judaism’s teachers speak, and marking their replies to His questions, He better perceives their spiritual darkness. My, how extremely far have His people drifted from His Father’s words to them! These Israeli religious teachers—these “leaders”—are nothing but “blind leaders of the blind” (Matthew 15:14)! How bewildered they are to hear this little boy speak such weighty truths about spiritual matters (Luke 2:47)! Their surprise testifies to their spiritual ignorance: had they really been listening to and believing the very Old Testament Scriptures they possessed and read/heard, they would have already known the very truths young Jesus was articulating to them!

The lad Jesus asks His stepfather and mother in today’s Scripture, “How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” Looking beyond His earthly guardians, He centers on His Heavenly Father and the occupation in which He is employed. “But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work” (John 5:17). “Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me” (John 7:16). “I speak that which I have seen with my Father…” (John 8:38). Jesus Christ has come to teach Israel His Father’s words—the very words they have rejected for several centuries!!

Luke chapter 2 closes with, “[50] And they [Joseph and Mary] understood not the saying which he spake unto them. [51] And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. [52] And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” The Bible is now silent about Jesus for another two decades, Him spiritually and physically maturing during that time. He reappears in chapter 3—now approximately age 30 (verse 23)—to be anointed with the Holy Spirit and formally begin His earthly ministry. Let us see the Lord Jesus, now an adult with greater spiritual understanding, work with His Father in the family business….

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luke 2:49 KJV).

And, just what is the Lord Jesus’ Father’s “business?”

Joseph and Mary are understandably heartbroken to have accidentally left young Jesus behind. Just a boy of 12 years, He is “lost” among the crowds of millions of Jews in and departing Jerusalem. En route back home to northern Israel (Galilee), Joseph and Mary turn around and begin to frantically search for Him among their relatives. Eventually, they re-trace their steps to Jerusalem, where—after searching for Him for three days—they are surprised to find Him in the Temple having that religious seminar with Israel’s “doctors” (Mosaic Law scholars).

Read today’s Scripture within its immediate context: “[48] And when they [Joseph and Mary] saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. [49] And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? [50] And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.”

Friend, did you notice how Jesus actually mildly rebuked His mother Mary here? She told Him, “Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.” The dear lady was sincere—she was a caring mother—but Mary uttered one inappropriate word that caused Jesus to adversely react with, “How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

Basically, He asked both her and Joseph: “Why have you hunted Me down? Have you not applied wisdom here, understanding that I need to be working with My Father here?” Mary called Joseph Jesus’ “father,” but Jesus shifted the focus from a mere man to Father God. “Mom and stepdad, I deliberately chose to stay behind here at the Jerusalem Temple. My Heavenly Father has something far more important for Me to do than follow you back home!” Being human, sin prevents Joseph and Mary from grasping such profound truths (verse 50)….

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luke 2:49 KJV).

And, just what is the Lord Jesus’ Father’s “business?”

Luke chapter 2 provides two marvelous truths concerning young Jesus—one before and the other after His theological discussion with Israel’s elders. Verse 40 states, “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.” Now, verse 52: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” Here is Christ’s humanity, the very theme of Luke’s Gospel Record. Almighty God, because He is God, cannot “increase in wisdom and stature.” Yet, the God-Man, because He is just as much Man as He is God, can mature spiritually and physically (like we do)! Between these two “bookend verses,” we find Him sitting in the midst of the doctors of Judaism.

As every Jewish boy of His day, Jesus was educated in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). His stepfather Joseph and mother Mary were influential here. Yet, read: “The Lord GOD [Father God] hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back” (Isaiah 50:4,5). Messiah is speaking, 700 years before His earthly ministry (check verse 6). In contrast to other Jewish lads though, the Lord Jesus diligently studied and always obeyed His Father’s Word.

By the time of age 12, Jesus could therefore discuss Jewish religion with those elders in Jerusalem. Verses 46 and 47 of Luke chapter 2 again: “And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.” His questions were doubtless posed to evaluate just where His nation’s leaders were in their spiritual understanding. Remember, Christ was learning, better grasping Israel’s ignorance and thereby enabling Him to see how to correct it….

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luke 2:49 KJV).

And, just what is the Lord Jesus’ Father’s “business?”

Luke chapter 2 (verses 41-50) shows the Lord Jesus, now in Palestine, at 12 years old. Israel should pay close attention to His behavior here, for 12 in Scripture is Israel’s number. The Mosaic Law commanded all Jewish males to travel thrice a year to the Jerusalem Temple to observe Judaism’s three major feasts—Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles (Exodus 23:14-17; Exodus 34:22,23; Deuteronomy 16:16).

Joseph, Mary, Jesus, and their family and friends have come to worship at Jerusalem for Passover (Luke 2:41). However, when it is time to go back home to Nazareth (northern Israel), young Jesus is accidentally left behind at the Temple. When Mary and Joseph return to the Temple, they are relieved to find Him conversing with the “doctors” (Jewish religious scholars—like possessors of a “Th.D.,” or “doctor of theology” degree). To say the least, it is certainly bizarre to find a little 12-year-old boy sitting at the center of an assembly of “grandfathers” and considering profound religious ideas with them!

Again, Luke relays the account: “[46] And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. [47] And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. [48] And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. [49] And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

Young Jesus listens intently to what His nation’s religious leaders have to say. Also, He poses a series of ensuing queries to probe their knowledge further. “And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers” (verse 47). Joseph and Mary are “amazed” to behold such a sight. Onlookers realize this is no ordinary 12-year-old! Despite His adolescence, Jesus is “about [His] Father’s business….”

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luke 2:49 KJV).

And, just what is the Lord Jesus’ Father’s “business?”

Matthew chapter 2 is one of the Bible’s two glimpses into Jesus’ life as a small boy. Based on verse 16, we see that He is as much as two years old here: Herod the Great, King of Judaea, perceives the “young child” as a threat to his throne, thus prompting him to slaughter all of Bethlehem’s children two years of age and under. It was just prior to this that the angel of the Lord warned Joseph to take young Jesus and His mother Mary and escape Palestine and flee to Egypt. This occurred to fulfill Bible prophecy.

Let us read Matthew 2:14,15: “When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.” This, of course, is a quotation of the Prophet Hosea whose ministry was over 700 years earlier. Notice Hosea chapter 11: “[1] When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. [2] As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.”

Originally, Hosea was referencing Israel’s deliverance from Egyptian bondage as recorded in the Book of Exodus. Through Matthew, though, the Holy Spirit shows that Hosea 11:1 was actually a dual prophecy. Not only did He intend the nation Israel in Hosea 11:1, He also anticipated the Lord Jesus Christ. That Israel perish not in Palestine because of a severe famine, God ordered his father (Jacob) to go down into Egypt (Genesis 46:1-7). Fast-forward 17 centuries, and see the magnificent parallel. That young Jesus perish not in Palestine because of a pagan king, God commanded His step-father (Joseph) to take Him down into Egypt! Yet, there is more.

Upon returning to Canaan, one son of God will be about ignoring his Father’s “business,” and the other Son of God will be about running His Father’s “business….”

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? (Luke 2:49 KJV).

And, just what is the Lord Jesus’ Father’s “business?”

Some have gone to great lengths to shed light on Jesus’ mysterious childhood. Since the Four Gospel Records—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—say almost nothing about it, denominationally-minded people have taken in hand the task of fabricating New Testament “apocryphal” literature. Such non-inspired writings are passed off as “God’s Word,” allegedly equal to the canonical Scripture. These spurious works contain accounts of Jesus’ boyhood adventures. What farces they are!

Friends, chapter 2 of the Book of Luke and chapter 2 of the Book of Matthew are the only authoritative records of Christ’s childhood. The Gospel Record as penned by Doctor Luke provides the greatest insight. Over the course of the next several studies, we will concentrate on Luke’s account and how it relates exactly what God the Holy Spirit would have us know concerning Jesus’ youthful days.

Today’s Scripture in context: “[41] Now his [Jesus’] parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. [42] And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. [43] And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. [44] But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. [45] And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

“[46] And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

Truly, young Jesus Christ has engaged in His Father’s “business….”

A Life That Will Please

Saturday, January 4, 2020

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20 KJV).

Today’s Scripture tells us who alone can live a life pleasing in God’s sight!

Everyone does “good” deeds. Yet, doing “good” is not necessarily good. For instance, people often do “good” just to receive praise/reward, make up for their wrongs, feel good, et cetera. Furthermore, despite our “good” deeds, we have plenty more bad ones! Pride, lying, evil thoughts, being a false witness, and being contentious are some of the things the LORD hates (Proverbs 6:16-19).

Mankind cannot even keep 10 simple rules from God. However, religion continues to urge us to keep seven sacraments, utter various prayers, give assorted offerings and “tithes,” attend numerous feasts and festivals, and perform sundry other tasks to “hopefully” please God and avoid hellfire. Whether we attempt to keep a church’s laws, our laws, or God’s laws, our flesh is far too weak to ever measure up. Just look at what God’s religion did to Israel—how much worse some man-made religion does to us!

As Saul of Tarsus, the Apostle Paul was a Pharisee, a religious leader of Israel. He was a nitpicker concerning Law-keeping, and yet, after his soul salvation, he admitted that all of his religion was “but dung” compared to Jesus Christ’s righteousness (Philippians 3:3-11). Even for the Christian, to live a perfect life is impossible (read of Paul’s miserable existence in Romans chapter 7). Paul had to forsake his vain religion and learn today’s Scripture: the Christian life is NOT the performance of the Christian, but the Lord Jesus Christ living and working in the Christian, as the Christian walks in an intelligent understanding of God’s Word to him or her!

If we trust a Saviour who will save—the Lord Jesus Christ—and trust a Book that will teach—the King James Bible—we can redeem the year for the great God and our Saviour, “who loved [us], and gave himself for [us]!” 🙂

A Book That Will Teach

Friday, January 3, 2020

“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual” (1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV).

Today’s Scripture tells us who alone we can trust to teach us God’s truth!

Once, I heard a minister give his self-proclaimed “prophetic” message about top headlines that would appear in the coming year. While he reassured his audience that he received this information directly from “the Lord” (?), he gave a disclaimer: “I do not know, but at the end of this year, we will see if what I say came to pass.” Unlike the inner impressions and hunches of this “Christian” preacher, the Holy Bible is infallible, and we can trust its information completely.

Long, long ago, God Almighty wrote a Book, and He preserved it through history through a multiplicity of manuscript copies, so that it could eventually be translated into English, so we could read it even today! (Of course, Satan, the master counterfeiter that he is, most certainly had his own manuscripts—they still circulate today as corrupt Bible translations.) God promised to preserve His words forever (Psalm 12:6,7; Isaiah 30:8; Matthew 24:35; 1 Peter 1:25). Consequently, every person will stand before Him one day to give account as to what he or she did with that Bible. Did we reject it in favor of counterfeits? Did we re-translate it to fit our denominational beliefs? Did we apply it to life by faith? Did we even read it at all?

As English-speaking people, we understand—or, at least, we should understand—that we can trust the 400-year-old King James Bible. Sadly, even in many church circles, we are often cautioned not to trust God’s preserved Word. Unfortunately, footnotes, study notes, and seminarians usually attempt to claim that authority by offering “better” readings or “better” manuscripts. Beloved, we can do without unbelieving textual critics and their “scholarship.” God does not need lost people to explain His Word to His children; He never did and He never will (1 Corinthians 2:14). Never forget that!

The Holy Spirit will teach us the King James Bible if we “read” (Ephesians 3:4), “study” (2 Timothy 2:15), and “consider” it (2 Timothy 2:7)!

A Saviour Who Will Save

Thursday, January 2, 2020

“…Jesus Christ of Nazareth… Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:10,12 KJV).

Today’s Scripture tells us who alone can save man from the everlasting hellfire he deserves!

A frequent objection made against Christianity is that every religion has “good” members, and to ignore them and limit heaven to a few Christians is unfair. This is a defected notion. How does one arrive at a definite conclusion when there is no one standard to gauge everyone’s “goodness?” They are “good” according to whom, according to what standard? Remember, relative morality actually does not help the sinner—he may be a “better” sinner than another, but he is also a “worse” sinner than yet another, and whether “better” or “worse,” he is still a sinner!

The God of the Bible has a simple method for determining righteousness. Today, He sees two types of people—saints and lost people. While both groups were born in sins (Ephesians 2:1-3), “shapen in iniquity [in the womb]” (Psalm 51:5), and “condemned already” (John 3:18), only the saints have come to realize their lost state. Job asked in Job 9:2, “How should a man be just [righteous, acceptable] with God?” Saints have come to the acknowledgement that they needed God’s righteousness, that they had a massive sin debt that they could never satisfy, that their “righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6), that they could never possibly make themselves right before a holy God (He is the standard; Romans 3:23). The lost people, however, do not realize they are lost, for they believe their religious works “score points” with God and make up for their sinful deeds (2 Corinthians 4:3,4). They ignore the finished crosswork of Jesus Christ as sufficient payment for their sins (1 Corinthians 15:3,4).

Saints have come by faith to Jesus Christ, whose name literally means, “Anointed Saviour” (cf. Psalm 2:2; Matthew 1:21). As the writer of the book of Hebrews said, “[Jesus] is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him” (7:25). Literally, no world religion has such a “Saviour” as Jesus Christ!
