If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

A Gentile in “time past” accessed the God of the Bible via two routes. Firstly, he could become a convert (proselyte) to Judaism by undergoing the (painful!) rite of physical circumcision (Exodus 12:48; cf. Genesis 17:23-27). Esther 8:17 explains, “…And many of the people of the land became Jews….” (By the way, sincere but sincerely wrong people—[religious, Law-keeping] Pharisees who did not rightly divide the word of truth—attempted to convince Paul’s converts to do likewise in Acts 15:1,5,24 [cf. Galatians 6:12,13]!) Secondly, a Gentile of “time past” could place himself under Israel to receive God’s blessings (Genesis 12:3). Observe how the Roman centurion loved Israel, built them a synagogue, and sent Jewish messengers to Christ (Luke 7:1-10; note verses 3-5). Also, remember the devil-possessed girl whose Gentile mother acknowledged Israel’s preeminence in the Earth and requested a “spillover” of God’s blessings/miracles reserved for Israel (Mark 7:24-30; note verses 27,28 [Gentiles are “dogs,” opposite of the “children” of Israel]).

Under Paul’s ministry (“but now”), no physical circumcision, no blessing Israel, and no Law-keeping are required for Gentiles (Galatians 3:1-15; Galatians 5:1-6; Galatians 6:15). Hence, a major controversy arose to produce the Jerusalem Conference of Acts chapter 15 and Galatians chapter 2! Paul’s Gospel is: “Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe [whether Jew or Gentile, by faith without works of any and every kind]: for there is no difference: For all [all Jews and all Gentiles] have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus” (Romans 3:22-26).

With Israel’s signs temporarily carrying over into Paul’s Gentile ministry during Acts, lost Jews were thus roused to behave like his Gentile converts (that is, believe on Christ without Law/works)….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

Dear friend, mark it well: Israel is God’s sign people. Whether the Abrahamic Covenant and its sign of physical circumcision, or the Old/Mosaic Covenant and its sign of Sabbath-Day keeping, or the Davidic Covenant and its sign of water baptism, or the Palestinian Covenant and its sign of Israel’s regathering into the Promised Land, or the New Covenant and its sign of the outpouring of the Holy Ghost and spiritual gifts, all these irrefutably prove Israel is God’s literal, physical, visible, earthly people with literal, physical, visible, earthly works. In the Bible, Israel and signs are absolutely inseparable.

Now, observe carefully! Here is where Christendom, our denominations, our churches went wrong. They want the same evidence (tokens or proofs) of God’s working with them, for they think what He was doing (and will do) with Israel is what He is still doing with them/us. It is Bible ignorance and false assumptions, multiplied over the course of 20 centuries. “What God did then, He still does now. He never changes.” Our denominational and theological systems were founded on this mentality of, “I want to be like Israel,” or “I am Israel.” They suppose there is spirituality in copying Israel’s program, and, where they cannot copy it, they just pretend to follow it, which produces hypocrisy.

What intensifies the silliness is when those who believe we have not replaced Israel and believe we are not Israel, become the very people who steal Israel’s covenants and Israel’s signs and apply them to themselves! No wonder people are confused, having receiving such mixed messages; no wonder they are frustrated, blending that which God never intended to be mixed; no wonder they struggle with doubts (unbelief). Of course, God is then blamed for this mess, people are turned away from the Scriptures altogether, and Satan is thoroughly delighted. How fortunate I was that I spent just the first 10 years of my Christian life in this cesspool of spiritual sewage before I escaped it. Others remain there for several decades, quite satisfied with their traditions of men (!).

Let us get back to “rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15)….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

Just about everyone in Christendom has no grasp of why Christ was water baptized. Apparently, all they can manage saying is, “If you want to be Jesus’ disciple, you need to obey God by following Him in ‘believer’s baptism!’” Instead of supporting a manmade institution by mindlessly parroting some cliché they heard in church, it would be far better if they carefully searched the Holy Scriptures they claim to know and esteem. They will thus understand the purpose of water baptism and gain some spiritual enlightenment and maturity.

Water baptism is a sign, the representation of the Davidic Covenant (just as physical circumcision symbolizes the Abrahamic Covenant). It accompanies the preaching of the Gospel of the Kingdom, as Israel is to become a kingdom of priests and must therefore undergo a washing with water like the Levitical priests at their installation. Water baptism signifies a purification, the defilement of idolatry being washed away. If so, then why was Jesus water baptized? Observe! Friend, if we are going to adopt the Bible-believing view, here are four reasons for His own water baptism.

Firstly, since water baptism is needful for priests (Exodus 29:4; Leviticus 8:6), and Christ is repeatedly designated as Israel’s “high priest” (Hebrews 2:17; Hebrews 3:1; Hebrews 4:14,15; Hebrews 5:5,10; Hebrews 6:20; Hebrews 7:26; Hebrews 8:1; Hebrews 9:11; Hebrews 10:21), He was water baptized and that “to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:13-17; cf. Mark 1:9-11). Secondly, the Lord Jesus needed water baptism to be manifested to Israel as Messiah/Christ, the Son of God (John 1:29-34). Thirdly, Christ was water baptized to identify Himself with believing Israel (“Little Flock;” Luke 12:32) that was likewise water baptized (Luke 3:21,22—to wit, He blends in with “all the people [believing Jewish remnant coming to John the Baptist’s water baptism]”). Fourthly, by Jesus being water baptized, He was exposing as lost (unbelievers, or, not His people!) those Jews who had refused to be water baptized of John (Luke 7:29,30).

We reiterate. For believing Israel (and for believing Gentiles in prophecy), water baptism is necessary as an outward indication of inward cleansing. Let us see yet another sign in God’s purpose and plan for the nation Israel….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

The nation Israel began with a “sign,” a token or mark—the “sign” of physical circumcision, representing or symbolizing the Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 17:9-14; Acts 7:8; Romans 4:11). Signs are a part of Jewish national heritage, Israel’s birthright. “Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye [Israelites] see signs and wonders, ye will not believe” (John 4:48); observe how the context is the miracle of Christ healing the nobleman’s dying son (verses 46-54). Contrasting the two major nationalities (Jews and Gentiles) of his day (the latter Acts period), Paul wrote: “For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:…” (1 Corinthians 1:22).

What started as a tribe of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob’s 12 sons, finally became a nation of a few million living in Egypt roughly 400 years later. In Exodus 4:1-9, the LORD therefore commissions Moses and endues him with miracle-working power to authenticate his message. “And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign. And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice,…” (verses 8,9). Read carefully how those first two “signs” of Moses’ ministry are handling serpents and healing leprosy. These are crucial in stirring up faith in the Jewish nation captive to Satan and sin. God ordered Moses in verse 17: “And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.” By chapter’s end, the Scriptures recount: “And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped” (verses 29-31). Again, “signs” attended Israel’s national birth as its people exited Egypt.

How striking it is that Moses’ ministry here previews Christ’s own ministry 1,500 years into the future….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

To begin the formidable task of sorting through the innumerable denominational arguments so we can isolate truth from error, it would do us well to remember the following: the nation Israel is God’s literal, physical, visible, earthly people, and their identity has literal, physical, visible, earthly components.

For example, the LORD God demonstrated how the nation Israel itself would spring forth from His own efforts rather than man’s. Wherefore, after Abram “did his best to help God” by producing a son in the energy of his flesh (Genesis 16:1-16)—which son (Ishmael) God rejected (!)—the LORD changed his name to “Abraham” and instituted the rite of physical circumcision (Genesis 17:1-14). After Abraham’s foreskin was cut off, there was literal and physical proof he had been permanently severed from his Adamic or sin nature. The LORD God then used Abraham to father a son (Isaac)… and there is no question that it was God’s power working in Abraham (Genesis 17:15-22; Genesis 21:1-5). As Galatians 4:21-31 affirms, what ultimately matters is what God does for Abraham (Isaac/Grace) rather than what Abraham does for God (Ishmael/Law).

Genesis 17:11 states how physical circumcision is “a token [sign] of the covenant betwixt [between] me [God] and you [Abraham and his seed].” Consequently, the Abrahamic Covenant of Genesis 12:1-3 is titled “the covenant of circumcision” (Acts 7:8). Romans 4:11 explains: “And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:….” While physically uncircumcised, Abraham simply trusted God’s words to be justified (given righteousness) in God’s sight back in Genesis chapter 11 (cf. Genesis 12:1-3; Hebrews 11:8). However, this does not enter the record of Scripture until Genesis 15:6. Moreover, years later (Genesis 17:24), Abraham is physically circumcised to prove he had already been declared righteous by faith.

Let it now be distinctly understood that signs play an integral role in God’s relations with Israel….

Peter’s Vision of the Unclean Animals #9

“On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,…” (Acts 10:9,10 KJV).

What can we really learn from this Bible passage?

Before Peter went to the Gentiles in Acts chapter 10, God had already broken down the middle wall of partition between Jew and Gentile with Paul’s salvation and commissioning in chapter 9 (check Acts 9:15,16; Acts 22:13-15; Acts 26:17,18). Israel had already fallen in chapter 7 and was now diminishing for the rest of Acts (Romans 11:11-14). With the Lord sending Peter to witness a drastic change in program at Cornelius’ house, Peter can now come to Paul’s defense 10 years later at the Jerusalem Conference.

Acts chapter 15: “[7] And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. [8] And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; [9] And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. [10] Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? [11] But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.”

Peter recognized Cornelius and those other Gentiles were saved without keeping the Law of Moses and without submitting to physical circumcision. This knowledge allowed Peter to defend Paul’s Gentile believers as not required to be physically circumcised or keep the Law of Moses to be saved (check Acts 15:1-5). The unusual words heard and unexpected events associated with Peter’s visit with Cornelius and other Gentiles at Caesarea, demonstrate how there has been a change in prophecy—and this makes it easier for the Little Flock to see how mystery now works with Paul’s ministry. Using dispensational eyes, we appreciate how this was God’s design in arranging the meeting between Peter and Cornelius all along.

To Be Seen and Heard #7

“But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,…” (Matthew 23:5 KJV).

Should we be in attendance at the “Desperate-for-Attention-and-Relevance Conference?”

In case we assume “to be seen of men” is confined to the prophetic program, we can and should refer to Paul’s epistle to Galatia. Even in the mystery program, we are vulnerable to boasting or “advertising self” by means of works-religion: “As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Galatians 6:12-14).

“To make a fair shew” in Greek is “euprosopeo,” as in “beautiful/good countenance/face.” An attraction is on display, and such an eye-catching sight is sure to draw attention and admiration. In the case of Galatians, it is the observance of physical circumcision in Judaism (law/Moses and grace/Paul mixed). Yet, it can also apply to any other rite, ritual, or ceremony that underscores the flesh doing something in an attempt to merit God’s favor—being water baptized, partaking of holy meals, lighting candles, confessing sins, walking aisles, attending church services, fasting, giving money, making religious gestures, and the like. Such works-religion activities become grounds for boasting, or “glorying in the flesh” (“look at what I did in religion,” or “see our new church member’s faithful performance!”). More weight is placed on men-pleasing and outward appearance (formalism) than on God’s approval and sound Bible doctrine motivating this conduct or that behavior.

When Christ saw crowds gathering around Himself, He withdrew, for He wanted His Heavenly Father to receive the praise rather than Himself (see Matthew 8:18; Mark 1:45; Luke 5:15,16). The Lord Jesus would not let Satan use even the slightest opportunity to turn something good (Father’s ministry) into something bad (Son’s praise). Perhaps we had better take notice….

“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,…” (Romans 1:1 KJV).

Friend, do you see the horizon here? How can it facilitate your understanding and enjoyment of the Bible?

Carefully read Romans 11:11-14 to comprehend national Israel’s current status before God in this the Dispensation of the Grace of God. Basically, in spite of Israel’s unbelief, and through Israel’s fall, the salvation and blessings of God are coming to the Gentiles or nations via Paul’s apostleship, ministry, message (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; cf. Acts 20:24). Gentiles can approach Israel’s God through faith in Christ’s finished crosswork on Calvary—without coming by means of Judaism, physical circumcision, or any other “time-past” requirement. You may also read Ephesians 2:1-18.

It was to be expected that, when the Gentiles would hear this message (Israel’s fall, setting aside, casting away), these nations would gloat or arrogantly delight (smirking, chuckling, teasing—“God turned to us Gentiles because you, Israel, were in unbelief!”). Thus, the Holy Spirit through Paul in that very chapter (see Romans 11:15-36) alerted these nations to fear instead of boast. Why? As God rejected and set Israel aside because of their sin of unbelief, so He will reject the nations because of their unbelief in due time (and, in the ages to come, return Israel to her exalted status as in time past). Our “but now” is only temporary; the nations’ access to God without Israel is but momentary. “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved…” (Romans 11:25,26a).

We are not Israel, and we have not replaced Israel. Yet, the Gentiles or nations resemble Israel in that they have responded to God in the same way Israel did. Israel overwhelmingly ignored all the prophets, John the Baptist, Christ’s earthly ministry, the 12 Apostles, and Father God’s other messengers to them. Likewise, the nations these last 20 centuries have not heeded the Apostle Paul (God’s spokesman to them).

“And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:…” (Genesis 9:12 KJV).

What are “tokens” in Scripture?

Apparently, Paul signed his name to each epistle (formal doctrinal letter): “The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write” (2 Thessalonians 3:17). That signature indicated, signified, or symbolized authenticity and apostolic authority.

Sometimes, tokens are hidden in the Bible, since their corresponding Hebrew or Greek words were translated as other English terms. For example, though the Greek “endeixis” was rendered “evident token” in Philippians 1:28, it was translated “proof” in 2 Corinthians 8:24: “Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.” The sign or indication of our love for the Lord and fellow believers is when we help them in their time of financial need. That Greek word was twice rendered “declare” (show, signify, demonstrate) in Romans 3:25,26 with respect to God manifesting His righteousness (rightness or justness) at Calvary: “[Christ Jesus] Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”

In the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible), the word “’ot” was translated “token” in Genesis 9:12,13,17 (the rainbow signifying God’s promise never to flood the world again), in Genesis 17:11 (physical circumcision representing Abraham’s death to the flesh), and in the many other references we covered earlier (Exodus 3:12; Exodus 12:13; Exodus 13:16; Numbers 17:10; Joshua 2:12; Job 21:29; Psalm 65:8; Psalm 86:17; Psalm 135:9; Isaiah 44:25). That Hebrew term was also rendered “sign/s” some 77 times (for examples, see Genesis 1:14, Exodus 4:9, Exodus 10:1, Exodus 31:13, Deuteronomy 6:22, Joshua 24:17, Psalm 78:43, Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 8:18, Jeremiah 10:2, and Ezekiel 20:20). It was also translated “miracles” in Numbers 14:22, Deuteronomy 11:3, and Deuteronomy 29:3. Additionally, it is the “mark” of Genesis 4:15. On one occasion, it is “ensign” (Numbers 2:2).

“And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:…” (Genesis 9:12 KJV).

What are “tokens” in Scripture?

After today’s Scripture, the next reference to a “token” is introduced in Genesis 17:10-14: “[10] This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. [11] And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. [12] And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. [13] He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. [14] And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.”

The above “Abrahamic Covenant” had an accompanying “token” or sign. Physical circumcision was a cutting off of the flesh, representative of how Abraham was dead to the flesh (separated from his performance, his Adamic or sin nature). God’s nation (Israel) would result from His works (the promised son Isaac) rather than Abraham’s efforts (his son Ishmael).

As touching Exodus 3:11,12 several centuries after Abraham, the LORD reassured skeptical Moses with a “token” or indication during his commissioning: “And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? And he [God] said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.” How would Moses know God sent him? Moses would lead Israel out of Egypt and right back to Mount Sinai where he was standing in Exodus chapter 3 (cf. Exodus 19:1-3)!

Once more, we gain the sense of “token….”
