The Spiritual Dexterity of Our Physical Posterity #83

“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word” (Psalm 119:9 KJV).

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

Although Paul performed healings, exorcisms, and other miraculous demonstrations (Acts 13:6-12; Acts 14:3,8-10; Acts 15:12; Acts 16:16-18; Acts 19:1-7,11,12; Acts 20:7-12; Acts 28:1-10; cf. 2 Corinthians 12:12), and his Gentile converts were granted the same miracle-working power (1 Corinthians 12:9,10,28-30), these were exceptions rather than the norm—and we cannot emphasize it enough (!). Such miracles became fewer and fewer as the years passed, until they disappeared altogether.

In the same epistle wherein he wrote how he wrought miracles (Galatians 3:5), Paul referred to his “infirmity of the flesh… [his] temptation which was in [his] flesh” (Galatians 4:13-15) (an unspecified physical problem—disability, disease, limitation—never cured). Moreover, he penned 2 Corinthians 11:30 and 2 Corinthians 12:5-10, additional verses as touching his “infirmities” (weaknesses, illnesses). After the Acts transitional period, he was unable to heal Timothy who suffered multiple health issues: “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities” (1 Timothy 5:23). His farewell has in its conclusion: “Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick” (2 Timothy 4:20). Before re-locating to Heaven, the Apostle could not cure an ill colleague in ministry!

“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:22,23). “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man [physical body] perish [grow older, sicker, and finally die], yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). Rather than a (temporary) physical healing, we await our resurrection to inhabit glorified bodies (Romans 8:17-25; 1 Corinthians 15:35-58; 2 Corinthians 5:1-5)….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

What was the significance of the healing miracles and casting out of devils of Moses’ ministry, Christ’s earthly ministry, and the 12 Apostles’ ministry in early Acts? It was more than simply to help people escape suffering or entertain them with supernatural demonstrations. God was communicating sound Bible doctrine by fulfilling centuries-old prophecies of the Old Testament.

“For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us…. And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity” (Isaiah 33:22,24). When God would found His earthly kingdom, there would be no physical disability or disease: “Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing:…” (Isaiah 35:5,6). Once Messiah (Christ Jesus) arrived, there would be a proliferation of healing miracles—as well as casting out of devils (evil spirits that rendered Israel unclean, unfit for God’s service): “And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land” (Zechariah 13:2). It would be the very earthly kingdom God intended for Adam and man before the Fall, before there were satanic activities on Earth and before there was the curse of sin and sickness on Earth. Hebrews 2:4 recalls early Acts: “God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?”

If Israel was to be used of God, not only did her people need to be cleansed of sin and delivered from Satan, they had to see proof that they would be God’s kingdom of priests. Thus enters the Davidic Covenant, and yet another sign….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

The Apostle Peter preached to Israel in chapter 3 of Acts, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began…. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities” (verses 19-21,25,26).

With the founding of God’s earthly kingdom (Matthew 5:5; Matthew 25:31,34; et cetera) still in view in early Acts, the “signs” of the Gospel of the Kingdom continued to be present—picking up exactly where Mark chapter 16 concluded. The healing of the lame man in the opening of Acts chapter 3 typifies Israel restored to kingdom glory (see Peter’s sermon beginning chapter 4). Chapter 5 elaborates: “[12] And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people [Israel!]; (and they were all with one accord in [king!] Solomon’s porch. [13] And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. [14] And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.) [15] Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. [16] There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.”

Again, in Scripture, “signs” and Israel go together….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

When JEHOVAH God brought Israel out of Egyptian slavery, He was thinking of His earthly kingdom headquartered in the Promised Land. Read this excerpt from the Song of Moses, Exodus chapter 15: “Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain [kingdom] of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established. The LORD shall reign for ever and ever” (verses 17,18). Skip over to chapter 19, verses 5 and 6: “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.”

During Jesus’ earthly ministry, the Gospel of the Kingdom was preached with accompanying miracles of casting out devils and healing the sick (reminiscent of Moses’ snake-handling and leprosy-healing in Exodus chapter 4!). “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick [insane], and those that had the palsy [paralytics]; and he healed them” (Matthew 4:23,24; cf. Luke 6:17-19). “And as ye [12 Apostles] go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:7,8). “And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:…” (Mark 3:14,15).

Observe again how these miracles are twice designated as “signs” in Mark 16:15-20, Mark’s conclusion bringing us into early Acts….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

The nation Israel began with a “sign,” a token or mark—the “sign” of physical circumcision, representing or symbolizing the Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 17:9-14; Acts 7:8; Romans 4:11). Signs are a part of Jewish national heritage, Israel’s birthright. “Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye [Israelites] see signs and wonders, ye will not believe” (John 4:48); observe how the context is the miracle of Christ healing the nobleman’s dying son (verses 46-54). Contrasting the two major nationalities (Jews and Gentiles) of his day (the latter Acts period), Paul wrote: “For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:…” (1 Corinthians 1:22).

What started as a tribe of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob’s 12 sons, finally became a nation of a few million living in Egypt roughly 400 years later. In Exodus 4:1-9, the LORD therefore commissions Moses and endues him with miracle-working power to authenticate his message. “And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign. And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice,…” (verses 8,9). Read carefully how those first two “signs” of Moses’ ministry are handling serpents and healing leprosy. These are crucial in stirring up faith in the Jewish nation captive to Satan and sin. God ordered Moses in verse 17: “And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.” By chapter’s end, the Scriptures recount: “And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped” (verses 29-31). Again, “signs” attended Israel’s national birth as its people exited Egypt.

How striking it is that Moses’ ministry here previews Christ’s own ministry 1,500 years into the future….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

Christendom is rather notorious for severe controversies and bitter contentions. Its tens of thousands of denominations, cults, and sects all fight over a multitude of positions, practices, and persons. Yet, these can be reduced to one simple fact: different levels of spiritual maturity result in discussions of various degrees of importance. It is usually challenging for non-Christians or new Christians, or even longtime professing Christians, to make sense of it all—and to determine if it is even worth getting into. The matters that are most serious regard anything and everything that complicates salvation from sin and/or salvation from erroneous teaching, for these two points involve God’s will for us: “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3,4).

Remember, just because it is in the Bible does not necessarily mean it is something that pertains to us or something we should do. Whether water baptism, confession of sins, tithing, the Lord’s Supper, Sabbath-Day keeping, good works, or spiritual gifts (including tongue-talking and healing), these exemplify the areas of debate amongst church members. The extent to which we are receptive to the Holy Spirit’s teaching ministry determines how successfully we navigate through such issues and arrive at correct conclusions. We are destined to wind up with wrong views once we insert the traditions, assumptions, and opinions of men.

While most inconvenient, it has to be stated. There is a great deal of blind allegiance to religious leaders in our “Christian” churches and schools. Consequently, commoners do not think beyond where their denominational officials leave them, being too fearful to venture outside of anything they are not taught in their theological system. Sometimes, this is done in innocence: people who just need to be taught the truth and want to be taught it, but few are willing to teach them. However, others need to be taught the truth but do not care to be taught it, so they turn away from those who would teach them.

Beloved, let us see if we wish to resolve these disagreements for ourselves….

The Case for Right Division #9

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).

Can today’s Scripture deliver someone from absolute stupidity before he or she literally perishes in it? (Yes!)

Ephesians 3:1,2 relays the following: “For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:…” The “dispensation” (Greek, “oikonomia,” “house rules”) the Lord has in effect today was given to the Apostle Paul (cf. Colossians 1:25-28). This is the body of truth applicable to us, and it is located in the 13 Pauline epistles, Romans through Philemon. Through Paul’s ministry, the mystery program, God is manifesting His grace—His unmerited favor—to mankind in a new way. By faith in Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork as sufficient payment for our sins, we as Gentiles outside of Israel and her prophetic program can be made righteous in God’s sight. God the Holy Spirit is taking us believers in Christ and forming the Church the Body of Christ, separate and distinct from the nation Israel (see Ephesians 2:13–3:12).

Alas, denominationally-minded people are either unintentionally or deliberately blind to dispensational truth. To exclusively follow the Lord’s heavenly ministry through Paul means they must forsake their denominational system (built on Christ’s earthly ministry!). They would have to admit their preacher or teacher lied to them. In fact, those who wish to keep their church traditions have resorted to disparaging dispensational Bible study as a “cult,” “heresy,” and so on. That is their choice. If they are determined to stay in their chaos, we respect their free will and let them remain in that ignorance. They can continue claiming their physical healing, dying because they refuse to visit doctors and receive medication. They can keep their starvation by fasting, holding out and holding on for “answers” from God as to why this or that never came to pass.

Dear friends, in the wake of non-dispensational Bible study, billions are left perplexed, hopeless, and even spiritually, doctrinally, and physically dead. Here is the heavy price that must be paid for failing to apply today’s Scripture. Above all, here is the case for right division!

Can today’s Scripture deliver someone from absolute stupidity before he or she literally perishes in it? (Yes!)

Recall our introductory remarks about the preacher who fasted for 51 days—and finally died by starvation! He was looking for answers from God as to “why the signs do not follow [his] ministry as Jesus said they would.” Obviously, this man was “naming and claiming” Mark 16:17,18: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Why did these verses not work for the pastor? He could not understand what the problem was. This is just one of countless examples demonstrating even Bible users and church leaders can become disoriented, disappointed, and discouraged. Let us reflect on another distressing passage.

“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it” (John 14:13,14). Dear friend, are you one of the millions who have begged God for all sorts of positive outcomes—with physical healing and “miracle money” being the top requests—but constant prayers were never answered? Instead, financial difficulties worsened and ill people grew sicker and died. How many poor souls concluded Jesus lied and God did not care about them? In fact, who among them abandoned the Bible and Christianity altogether because of these headaches and heartbreaks?

Of course, we can “name and claim” all the favorite Bible passages we want—even fasting and praying earnestly when the promises fail to come to pass, demanding God give us His reasons for those unanswered prayers. We can go so far as to literally starve ourselves to death, engaged in an endless pursuit of solutions to such vexing puzzles. Or, we could apply today’s Scripture and have amazing clarity, stability, and tranquility….

You Do Not Have to Lose Everything #4

“For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (2 Timothy 1:12 KJV).

Dear friend, you do not have to lose everything!

In addition to losing their wealth, people fear losing their health—injuries sustained in an accident, a debilitating disease, the increasing limitations that come with the aging process, and so on. As it has been stated long ago, “All the ‘healing’ claims aside, the death rate is still one apiece!” “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). Due to genetics, lifestyle habits, environment, and other factors, we all suffer a variety of physical infirmities.

Outlining this curse of sin on creation, the Apostle Paul wrote the following observations in Romans chapter 8: “[16] The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: [17] And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. [18] For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. [19] For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. [20] For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, [21] Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. [22] For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. [23] And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.”

Let us now think about another tragedy, the inescapable reality of losing our loved ones….

Glory Days #5

“For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody” (Isaiah 51:3 KJV).

Behold, the glory days—both past and future!

Today’s Scripture awaits the day when the LORD consoles Zion (Jerusalem). Not only has she suffered the terrible effects of the curse established in Genesis chapter 3, God has judged her for her people’s idolatry. Gentiles have entered her land, ravaging it with war and destruction. Her people have been taken away captive for their transgressions, their disobedience to the Old Covenant (Mosaic Law) punished. Read Leviticus 26:27-46.

“And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the LORD, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword” (Amos 7:8,9; Israel’s Assyrian Captivity). “In all your dwellingplaces the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places shall be desolate; that your altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and your idols may be broken and cease, and your images may be cut down, and your works may be abolished” (Ezekiel 6:6; Judah’s Babylonian Captivity a century later).

However, there is the hope of Israel’s restoration at Christ’s Second Coming: “Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God” (Isaiah 52:9,10). “And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in” (Isaiah 58:12).

Earth’s former glory days—the Garden of Eden—will return. When the Lord comes back, the planet will revert to pre-Fall conditions….
