NO Bible Ignorance in the Midst of Tragedy! #3

“Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1 KJV).

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

Trying to be clever, desperately grabbing at superficial excuses so as not to believe the Bible or accept any “higher power,” critics of Christianity or religion in general produce various accusations. If God is omnipotent (all-powerful), can He not prevent tragedies? If He cannot stop them, then He is not great! If He can stop them but does not, then He is not good! These “intelligent” arguments are predicated upon the false assumption we mortal, puny, fallible creatures could sit in judgment of a Supreme Being (like “wise-in-their-own-eyes” children critiquing an adult!).

If He is God, could we ever hope to know all that He knows? If ever we knew as much as He does, then we ourselves would be God, right? Since we are not God, since we do not know everything there is to know, is it not plausible that His vindication is found amongst our unknown knowledge? Moreover, could our liability (we having wrongly charged Him with misconduct) be part of that unknown knowledge? To wit, in spite of tragedies, He could be both good and great (though we in our limitations have already foolishly passed unjust sentence on Him). After all, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8,9).

One conceited Bible mocker complained he did not believe in God because the universe tries to kill us 1,000 different ways—such as food and water shortages, diseases, ultraviolet radiation, and vicious and hungry wild animals. Amazingly, that whiner was still alive to grumble! Some intelligent mind had figured out a way to ensure his survival (an immune system, medication, weapons, Earth’s protective atmosphere, and so on)! In short, we have been equipped to live in the midst of threats, despite perils and tragedies… and that is quite a strong case for a benevolent, loving, personal, Creator God who seeks our welfare….

NO Bible Ignorance in the Midst of Tragedy! #2

“Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1 KJV).

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

Let us start by considering one of the most worn-out questions: Why do bad things happen to good people? (Conversely, it could be asked: Why do good things happen to bad people? Yet, that is not the scope of this study.) Suffering stems from three sources.

Firstly, because of sin, we live in a world (an entire universe) that is disintegrating, falling apart, decaying, becoming more chaotic with the passage of time. Genesis 3:16-19 is true. We grow sick, old, and die. “For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body” (Romans 8:22,23). The curse of sin is random—each individual suffering a unique set of troubles, weaknesses, illnesses.

Secondly, we and others make stupid decisions: as we and they sow, so we and they reap. This principle clarifies that whatever we do (good and bad) affects others and whatever they do (good and bad) affects us. “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:7,8).

Thirdly, we Christians suffer persecution because we live in enemy territory, Satan and his servants looking to injure or eliminate us the “competition.” “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). “Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation [trouble] enter into the kingdom of God (Acts 14:22). “Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also” (John 15:20).

Here is adult understanding….

NO Bible Ignorance in the Midst of Tragedy! #1

“Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1 KJV).

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

The Christian faces two seemingly insurmountable challenges in ministry. Firstly, he or she will meet people suffering under the curse of sin, living in a fallen world, going through a variety of great difficulties, trials, and tribulations. Secondly, these tormented souls really have no understanding as to what is really going on. What compounds the distress is the fact that denominational thinking thoroughly confuses Christians and non-Christians alike.

It is so tragic that even people who possess and/or use the Bible have few to no answers for those seeking enlightenment about life’s problems. This unfortunate situation gives rise to yet another disaster—the Holy Bible mocked, ridiculed, disdained, thought of as nothing but a compilation of fairytales and superstitions. Annoyed and angered, people begin lashing out and utterly hating the Bible because its users themselves seldom offer anything meaningful or substantive. Shallow, sentimental clichés are definitely no substitute for sound Bible doctrine!

When professing Christians ask why bad things happen to good people, or inquire why a loving God would allow suffering, or claim how problems will just vanish if we quote enough verses, or assert that we can say the right words in prayer to get a desired outcome, it shows us that they are learning nothing from the Bible at church. In short, “church services” for them is a time of entertainment or amusement, hearing some philosophical or popular psychology quotes, watching a few rituals or ceremonies, and giving a donation in the collection plate to “make God happy with them.” Non-Christians may be lost, but they, to some extent, know something is not right in this world. What they also know is Christendom has no answers for them. Shame!

Dear friends, in the midst of any tragedy, one prayer we should become familiar with is, “LORD, deliver us from Bible ignorance!” There is no more dangerous a time than when wild, senseless emotions and overwhelming spiritual darkness reign as tyrants over us….

Redeem the Year!

Wednesday, January 1, 2025

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17 KJV).

What great advice for 2025!

Despite 2,000 years of Bible schools and seminaries, 2,000 years of a completed Bible canon, 2,000 years of Bible reading in churches, several decades of “Christian” television and radio, and a decade-plus of widespread use of “Christian” websites, how sad that Bible ignorance is still quite extensive (it is as if God never gave His Word to start with!).

Frankly, the Church the Body of Christ needs to wake up! The verse previous to today’s Scripture says, “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light” (verse 14). Paul, loosely quoting Isaiah 60:1, reminded us that the spiritual ignorance that gripped Israel in Isaiah’s day seized Christians in his day—and it still grips Christians 20 centuries later. Feel-good sermons, enjoyable “worship” services, and rites, rituals, and ceremonies will NOT solve this problem—they exacerbate it!

“[God] will have all men to be saved…” (1 Timothy 2:4a). Do you want this New Year to count for God’s glory? First, you need to get saved from sins and hell! You need to become a Christian by trusting in and relying on Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection as sufficient payment for your sins (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). That is only part of God’s will for you, for 1 Timothy 2:4b continues, “[God] will have all men… to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” Now, God’s will for your Christian life is daily, personal Bible study to renew your mind, so your faith in those verses can cause God to work in your life—it will be His life, thus making you “perfect [spiritually mature], throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16,17).

Today’s Scripture urges us to buy back the time Satan has robbed from God (time created for God’s glory). By faith, we need to make that time glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by applying His Word, particularly Paul’s epistles of Romans through Philemon, to our lives. Have a good year in Christ! 🙂

Run! Fight!

Wednesday, October 30, 2024

“I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (1 Corinthians 9:26,27 KJV).

Here is some outstanding direction for a fruitful Christian life and ministry….

Back when I was attending university, I knew a graduate lady who had a 95-year-old mother. The rumor in our geology department was that mother said motorized scooters were for “old people” and she absolutely refused to purchase one in which to ride. Fast-forward all these years later, and the woman just died at age 108! Believe it or not, she made world news as an athlete (runner) in her final years. We will all be left to wonder if she ever bought that scooter….

She took such small steps when she ran, and a neighbor of her daughter told me how he (himself in his late 80s) always cringed for fear that she would fall and get seriously injured and/or perish. Fortunately, she never did. In fact, she even set a world record—the only person between the ages of 105 and 109 to run the 100-meter dash! She had to stop running at 105 due to failing eyesight. A short illness finally caused her to leave this world… just a few months shy of 109. She still had a clear mind, wondering until the end as to why she had lived so long.

The above lady was an example of maintaining physical and mental health well above age 100—keeping active as much as possible, not just sitting in a chair and feeling sorry for herself. She was quite lively and determined to enjoy the time she had here. Most importantly though, we certainly focus on eternity, remembering that we, like a well-trained runner or boxer, know the boundaries and rules and goal of the activity and we are participating accordingly, lest our Christian service be rejected (we become the “castaway” of today’s Scripture). Sound Bible doctrine, the Word of God rightly divided (2 Timothy 2:15), especially Romans through Philemon, will profit us even more than physical exercise will.

333’s 4900th – Free the Prisoners!

Tuesday, October 29, 2024

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32 KJV).

Today, “333 Words of Grace” marks its 4900th study!

Not long ago, a Christian lady we have been ministering to these last eight years asked me for some Bible study literature so she could give it to a few family members who needed to learn the truth. She spent several decades in a cult, after which she trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour (roughly 10 years ago). Her visits to local churches were most discouraging and disappointing—especially when she heard the loud music and saw the loss of bodily control (rolling around on the floor, for example). It is especially concerning when her brother, formerly in the family cult, became a Christian decades ago and used to be a Bible teacher—but has since gone back into worldly thinking and conduct (rendering him unfit to guide her into the truth).

As I sat with her at her dining room table, I began explaining a certain Bible concept that precious few ever come to know. Suddenly, she whipped out a sheet of paper that bore my handwriting—something I had written for her, on which she had scribbled the date “2016.” I had actually forgotten about it. All these years since I first visited her, and there she still had it in her Bible! Furthermore, she still recognized the importance of the Bible timeline—and was happy to pass it on to those relatives of hers.

Another Christian, who happened to randomly land on our ministry websites a few years ago, just celebrated his 75th birthday. He was fed up with his denomination leading him astray. As he has grown in the Word rightly divided, he realizes how vital dispensational Bible study is. It has truly revolutionized how he views the Holy Scriptures. Like with the aforementioned lady, we are more than eager to share what little we know—that more and more people be freed from the prisons of the traditions and speculations of men, in bondage to sin and Satan’s policy of evil (see today’s Scripture).

Beloved, for nearly 13½ years (believe it or not!), we have gathered here around daily studies of the King James Bible rightly divided. By God’s grace, let us continue to do so… moving along to #5000! Praise our Lord Jesus Christ!

A Tattered Book Retires!

Monday, October 28, 2024

“Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart” (Psalm 119:111 KJV).

Recently, after more than 18 years of service in ministry, the pages of my personal printed Bible finally reached the irreversible point of disintegration. Stained with finger oils—and beginning to harden, fold, crack, and break—these leaves just could not handle any more wear and tear (or tape!). Such explains why good Bible manuscripts did not always survive church history, and why “old” age does not automatically suggest a manuscript has the best theological quality. A book in good or excellent physical condition indicates limited or no usage.

Contrary to what “scholars” repeat, we are not looking for the best text by establishing physical age of manuscripts (since age is sometimes difficult or impossible to determine, and false teachers go all the way back to Satan in Genesis chapter 3). We are seeking readings that meet other criteria—witnesses spanning multiple centuries (not just a few centuries), manuscripts scattered geographically (not confined to one location), readings translated into a variety of languages, and verses quoted extensively in Christian writings during the earlier centuries. A manuscript infrequently used means Christians must have been utilizing some other document. Climate (high humidity, as opposed to desert dry air) can accelerate the rate of decomposition of manuscripts. Good manuscripts can be easily lost to atmospheric conditions.

Thankfully, we know faithful scribes and copyists passed down the words of God to us via a multiplicity of reliable manuscript copies (just as Satan’s counterfeits were preserved through unbelieving men via the energy of the flesh). It was never God’s intention to preserve His original manuscripts—only preserve the text of those manuscripts by having them copied onto other manuscripts. Therefore, a manuscript can be relatively young but have words descended from manuscripts several centuries older. Such is the case of our 400-year-old King James Bible.

Before the printing press was invented circa 1439, Bibles had to be copied by hand and thus were far rarer and more expensive to buy or rent. Brethren, we ought to be thankful we can easily purchase new, fresh Bibles when our old ones wear out. My replacement has been in service for a few weeks now. Maybe it will endure as long as its predecessor… maybe not….

An Inescapable Testimony #10

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12 KJV).

How can we have an inescapable testimony?

Dear Christian friends, try as hard as we might, it is not our job to convince anyone of anything. We can (and should) offer them evidence, but we cannot force them to believe it. Indeed, Satan uses works-religion (self-righteousness) to blind them to the Gospel of Grace, yet God’s light shines through even the thickest spiritual veil (see 2 Corinthians 4:1-6).

The entrance of God’s words gives spiritual light (Psalm 119:130), but hearers usually decide to hide in the darkness (just as critters dwelling underneath a rock scatter when you overturn it!). “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved [exposed as wrong]” (John 3:19,20).

Just because we do not see immediate results does not automatically mean we failed in ministry. What matters most is whether or not we gave them anything worthwhile to think about. Did we offer them sound Bible doctrine to correct their errors and escape their snare? Or, did we give them just another religious system in which to be in bondage (nothing better than what they already have!)?

Several obstacles must be overcome if one is to accept the truth. Emotional turmoil, loss of pride and ego, becoming an outcast from social circles, are surely to be faced—among other traumatic consequences. Therefore, quick conversion is rare. People are hesitant to leave trinkets and take up treasures because they have grown accustomed to those trinkets (and daily interact with similar people, who would ostracize them, so instant relinquishment is quite costly).

Provided we at least give them 1 Corinthians 15:3,4 (“Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He rose again the third day”), and they still wind up at the Great White Throne Judgment, it is an inescapable testimony that they heard a pure Gospel of Grace from us!

Saints, please remember this work of the ministry requires monthly financial support to operate (Galatians 6:6; Philippians 4:16-17; 2 Corinthians 9:6-7). Those who prefer electronic giving can donate securely here: https://www.paypal.me/ShawnBrasseaux. Anyone who wishes to donate by regular mail can visit https://333wordsofgrace.org/contact-us-mailing-address-for-donations/ for details. Thanks to all who give to and pray for us! Unfortunately, since our ministry audience is so large and our ministry staff is so small, I can no longer personally respond to everyone. Thanks so much for understanding in this regard. 🙂

When someone hears or reads the Word of God, the Holy Bible, it is like a measuring rod piercing his or her heart (soul) and spirit. The person realizes how he or she compares to those Divine words. If there is faith, the person will use his or her heart or soul to agree with God. However, if there is unbelief, the person disagrees with God. These two responses depend upon the individual’s willingness to admit personal shortcomings (erroneous words or sinful deeds).

Either way, the Bible serves as a “discerner,” a critic or judge, evaluating what is really inside of each of us (today’s Scripture). At some point, everyone has a chance to hear and understand their sin problem—how they have come short of God’s righteous standard in Jesus Christ, how their nature in Adam damns them, how their works do not impress Almighty God. People hide behind ignorance and/or self-righteousness, but that Word of God keeps poking their soul—cutting them and pricking them. Over time, the heart of such people becomes increasingly hardened or insensitive. Passive unbelief (refusing to agree with God) escalates into hostility (making fun of the Scriptures, persecuting Christians who preach them, and so on).

Believe it or not, the Word of God we hear never actually leaves any of us. The souls suffering in the flames of Hell this very second can still remember Bible verses, knowing above all, “I did not have to come here to this horrific place of torment! Had I believed God’s words to me when I had the opportunity, I would not be here now!” They will always remember that, too—a truly inescapable testimony. In fact, the more light they rejected, the hotter their punishment in the Lake of Fire (see “more tolerable” in Matthew 10:15, Matthew 11:22, Matthew 11:24, Mark 6:11, Luke 10:12, and Luke 10:14)!

Let us summarize and conclude this devotionals arc….

An Inescapable Testimony #8

Friday, October 4, 2024

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12 KJV).

How can we have an inescapable testimony?

Today’s Scripture describes the Word of God, the Holy Bible, as “quick” (living, lively, able to give life) and “powerful” (active, mighty, capable of work). It can impart life to those who hear it (physically, as in John 5:25; or spiritually, as in John 6:63). It is also “sharper than any twoedged sword,” efficiently slicing up and down, penetrating beyond the physical realm and right into “the soul and spirit” (cutting in two the parts of the inner man, heart/emotions and mind, respectively). Also, it slashes into “the joints and marrow” (most intimate realms of the spiritual body). We wish to concentrate on the final phrase, “and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

In Greek, “discerner” is “kritikos,” the basis for our English words such as “critic,” “critical,” and “criticism.” The Bible judges, evaluates, or discriminates “the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Such “thoughts” are, of course, the ideas someone thinks, devises, or conceives. The “intents” are motives, purposes, or objectives. Holy Scripture is competent to pass judgment on what our heart (soul) thinks and aims to do. Not only is this true of the written Word of God, it can apply to the spoken Word (before Scripture was written).

For example, after hearing the Apostle Peter’s sermon on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-36), unbelieving Jews in Jerusalem were “pricked in their heart” (verse 37). They were convicted: the Holy Spirit, giving Peter utterance, spoke to them and used His words to pierce or inflict pain (sorrow, for example) in their soul. This led to them seeing how they had killed their Messiah Jesus in unbelief. In more violent situations, the Holy Spirit utilized Peter’s sermon in Acts 5:29-32 and Stephen’s sermon in Acts 7:2-53 to “cut to the heart [saw them through with vexation!]” Israel’s apostate religious leaders (Acts 5:33; Acts 7:54).

The Word of God being read or preached still brings out vehement reactions, positive and negative….
