“God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:9 KJV).

In this roller coaster called “life,” who is truly “faithful?”

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5,6). “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:1,2).

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:1-7).

Once, I gave a Christian some Bible verses to navigate his perplexing (!) struggles. His answer to those Scriptures was, “But my human mind cannot fathom that.” My swift answer was, “We are not using the human mind but God’s mind.” See, he inadvertently declared his fundamental problem by echoing the Corinthians (or the ancient Greek philosophers, lovers of human wisdom). His primary difficulty was unbelief… and, yet, he was a member of the Body of Christ. The roller-coaster of life had driven him to trust in his own resources, his own intellect, instead of the renewed mind the Holy Spirit offers us….

“God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:9 KJV).

In this roller coaster called “life,” who is truly “faithful?”

Addressing the heathen Gentiles in central Turkey, Paul referred to how they worshipped “vanities” (worthless idols) because the God of Israel had “in times past suffered [permitted, allowed] all nations to walk in their own ways” (Acts 14:11-17). In Athens, the intellectual capital of the Roman Empire, Paul pointed out their pagan idolatry was “ignorance” (Acts 17:16,22-31). This was the spiritual darkness and blindness to which God had handed over the nations back at the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11:1-9.

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things” (Romans 1:20-23). Here was the origin of Greek philosophy—systems of thought founded on Satan worship.

Doubtless, the Corinthians were not faithful, reliable, dependable, trustworthy. God could not—and did not—expect them to live the Christian life. He knows the flesh is weak, though it certainly exerts great effort to try to manage or overcome sin. The secular pressure from nearby Athens was so tempting. Supposedly, every “wise” man in Corinth boasted he had the solutions to the world’s problems. Of course, this was human wisdom, not the wisdom of the God of the Bible. Yet, the Corinthian Christians had even adopted these faulty ideas, discarding the Holy Scriptures in favor of something “more rational” (appealing to the intellect). As long as it was the resources they had in and of themselves, they were totally void of God’s power and life—and, hence, their Christian life was not functioning properly.

The Corinthians were building their Christian life on a foundation of shifting sand….

“God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:9 KJV).

In this roller coaster called “life,” who is truly “faithful?”

Paul expressed gratitude to God for giving the Corinthians grace (unmerited favor through Calvary’s finished crosswork). We read chapter 1, the context of today’s Scripture: “[4] I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; [5] That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; [6] Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: [7] So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: [8] Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Father God had already furnished them in Christ with everything they needed for victorious Christian living, but they had not made any use of those resources by faith. Like millions of Christians and hundreds of millions of church members now, they were depending on philosophy—love of human wisdom—to guide their thoughts and lives. God’s wisdom, however, was uninteresting to them. What an understatement it is to say there was spiritual catastrophe in Corinth!

Still, as awful as spiritual conditions were in Corinth, the promise of verse 8 held true—and, while it may be difficult to believe, was permanent. Father God would “confirm [them] unto the end,” keep them safe and secure, strengthening and pronouncing them “blameless” in Christ because they would always have God’s righteousness in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). It was what God did that ultimately mattered—as opposed to what they did or were doing (thinking and acting like complete spiritual fools, frankly!).

Crosswinds (blowing from left and right) and headwinds (pushing from the front) were driving the Corinthians off course doctrinally. False teachers were swaying them in every which way but the right one, which rendered them “children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 4:14). They were letting their situations and circumstances cause them to lose sight of their life and victory in Christ….

The Roller-Coaster of Life #2

“God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:9 KJV).

In this roller coaster called “life,” who is truly “faithful?”

Using secular historical data, we can say Paul first arrived in Corinth circa A.D. 50–51. According to Roman records, that was Gallio’s brief term as deputy or governor of Achaia or southern Greece (see Acts 18:12). It was around this period of Acts chapter 18 that Paul wins the Corinthians to the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. He teaches them the Word of God for nearly two years (verses 11,18).

Eventually, he moves on to Ephesus (western Turkey) before concluding his second apostolic journey by returning to Antioch of Syria (verses 19-22). As he launches his third apostolic journey in verse 23, he re-visits Ephesus, wherein he resides for three years (all of chapter 19; see Acts 20:17,31). It would have been during the opening verse of Acts chapter 20, his final days in Ephesus, that he composed 1 Corinthians (see 1 Corinthians 16:8,9). In other words, when he wrote 1 Corinthians, as many as six years could have passed since he first preached the Gospel of Grace to them (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Stated another way, the Corinthians have been members of the Church the Body of Christ for at least five years. Alas, as we study 1 Corinthians, it is apparent they have not grown and developed into mature Bible believers. Such prolonged exposure to sound doctrine should have brought their thoughts and lives much further than where they are currently situated. Observe chapter 3, verses 1-3: “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual [led by the Spirit of God], but as unto carnal [fleshly], even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?” The Corinthians have not continued in the edification process, so they are malnourished, spiritual babies who still cannot tolerate solid spiritual food….

Tokens #10

“And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:…” (Genesis 9:12 KJV).

What are “tokens” in Scripture?

Reading about the numerous tokens in the Bible, we should remember they are things serving as signs, indications, proofs, representations, or evidences of other things. Something intangible (cannot be touched) or invisible (cannot be seen) has a corresponding sign that can be touched and/or seen. In fact, did you know “token” is etymologically related to “teach?” A lesson is being imparted, information to be learned is being offered, data is being chronicled in a clear, understandable way. This is especially true in a Jewish context, for “the Jews require a sign” (1 Corinthians 1:22).

Though we may choose otherwise, the God of the Bible does not want us to be ignorant. He wishes we would be informed, for He Himself knows the Christian life will not operate on the basis of ignorance because it cannot operate on the basis of ignorance. No one will comprehend anything in the Bible unless they are willing to be taught of God the Holy Spirit. We do not have to be confused about the Scriptures—though most are. This is not God’s fault. Our Bible understanding does not have to be imperfect—yet it often is. Neither is this God’s fault.

If we have a question about a King James Bible word, phrase, or verse, it would be far more advantageous if we gave it the benefit of the doubt as opposed to changing it because of our limited knowledge. As Bible students, as “workmen” (2 Timothy 2:15), we should eagerly endure an unbelievable amount of trouble to find an answer, a definition, a reason. Let us see how our 1611 translators handled those terms in other places. We ought to compare, contrast, and evaluate whatever information we can collect. It might take months, years, or even decades to research a matter to conclusion or resolution. Or, we might not obtain an answer until we get to Heaven. As long as we can tell the Lord we made an effort to grow and develop into mature believers, that being a token of our sincere pursuit of the truth, we know His praise is certain.

A Higher Education: It Is Up to You!

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12 KJV).

Eighteen years ago today, I graduated high school. Consequently, we dedicate this devotional to high school students who are nearing graduation.

Are you about to graduate high school? What would God have you do afterward? Go to college? Trade school? Something else? What career should you pursue? If you do plan on education after high school, where should you attend school? These are tough questions, and while God’s Word does not answer them, you can make decisions that conform to sound Bible doctrine—that is God’s will.

In today’s Scripture, Paul encourages downcast Timothy. Timothy was considerably younger than the Apostle Paul. Older people who are teaching false doctrine are intimidating young Timothy: “Tim, you are too young to teach God’s Word. Let us handle it.” Young Timothy conceded, became silent, and allowed the (“older and wiser”) false teachers to continue teaching their damnable heresies (cf. 1 Timothy 1:3-7; 2 Timothy 1:5-8). Paul replied, “Timothy, Speak up! Let no man despise thy youth!”

Christian youth can be just as effectual in their station in life as Christian adults. The lost world is watching us Christians, and we need to be sure that our actions are in accordance with the sound Bible doctrine we claim to believe (lest we be guilty of confusing the already-puzzled unbelievers). Whether “young or old,” our speech, our lifestyle, our acts of love, our determination, our belief in sound Bible doctrine, and our separation from that which God hates, is the way we communicate to the lost world God’s Word and its preeminence in our lives and hearts (today’s Scripture).

Above all, dear graduates, whatever you do post-graduation, “do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (Colossians 3:17). After all, it really is not your life—it is Christ’s life in you (Galatians 2:20; Colossians 3:4), so He alone deserves the glory! 🙂

Mother: A Virtuous Woman

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10 KJV).

Today is Mother’s Day, so we dedicate this devotional to godly women (specifically mothers). I especially dedicate this to the virtuous woman who has been in my life for almost 36 years… my mom!

Today’s Scripture is the first verse of the Bible’s “Virtuous Woman” passage (Proverbs 31:10-31). King Solomon explained that the virtuous woman:

  • has a husband who safely trusts in her (verses 11,12).
  • is not lazy, but is strong because she works to feed and clothe her family and herself (verses 13-19,21,22,24,25,27).
  • pities the poor and needy (verse 20).
  • has a husband who is well-known because of her godly lifestyle (verse 23).
  • opens her mouth with wisdom, and speaks kindly and lovingly (verse 26).
  • has children and a husband who praise her (verse 28).
  • excels in what she does (verse 29).
  • has works that praise her (verse 31).

Verse 30 explains the virtuous woman is “a woman that feareth the LORD.”

The Apostle Paul wrote that godly women should: not slander/gossip, not be controlled by alcohol and emotions (sober minded), be teachers of good things, love their husbands and children, be cautious and modest, maintain the home, be “good,” and should obey (respect) their husbands… “that the word of God be not blasphemed” (Titus 2:3-5). A Christian woman, especially a mother, should be a virtuous woman in beliefs as well as in deed. She needs to set an example for her children (especially her daughters).

A Christian woman and/or Christian mother places her faith in this sound Bible doctrine, the indwelling Holy Spirit will then take that doctrine and transform her for God’s glory (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Her mind will be renewed by sound Bible doctrine, and that will transform her outward activity (Romans 12:1,2).

Are you a Christian woman or Christian mother who desires to be the woman God intends you to be in Christ Jesus? Place your faith in this sound Bible doctrine, and God will take care of the rest!

“And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering [sexual carelessness] and wantonness [shamelessness], not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof” (Romans 13:11-14 KJV).

Only by God’s grace, “333 Words of Grace” celebrates its 4,700th devotional!

Dear saints and readers, over the course of these last 4,700 days, we have striven to provide you with clear and concise daily studies from the King James Bible rightly divided. We trust that they have enabled you to either learn how to be saved from your sins by trusting Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork as sufficient payment for your sins, or come to the knowledge of the truth (dispensational Bible study) (1 Timothy 2:4).

We need to grow up in the Holy Scriptures—eliminating the childish thinking, throwing away our spiritual baby bottles and bibs and diapers. Indeed, we ought to walk by faith as spiritually mature sons of God who can do the work of the ministry. Denominations are intended to produce robots, people who do not really think for themselves but blindly follow “scholars” and participate in programs and “worship” sessions. As today’s Scripture states, it is “high time”—almost too late to act—we wake up from our spiritual lethargy/juvenility and reach the point of spiritual maturity. Whether philosophy, traditions of men, lasciviousness, asceticism, “scholarship,” or some other sin of the flesh or sin of the spirit, the Church the Body of Christ has wasted nearly 2,000 years on all kinds of “dead ends.” We ought to wake up and grow up!

Having come quite far in this ministry project, we have the renewed mind of Romans 12:1,2 and thus can function as grace believers—people who not only talk about “grace” but exhibit it in their thoughts and actions. Please be sure to share with others what you have learned, that they can enjoy grace living too.

Redeem the Year!

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17 KJV).

What great advice for 2024!

Despite 2,000 years of Bible schools and seminaries, 2,000 years of a completed Bible canon, 2,000 years of Bible reading in churches, several decades of “Christian” television and radio, and a decade-plus of widespread use of “Christian” websites, how sad that Bible ignorance is still quite extensive (it is as if God never gave His Word to start with!).

Frankly, the Church the Body of Christ needs to wake up! The verse previous to today’s Scripture says, “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light” (verse 14). Paul, loosely quoting Isaiah 60:1, reminded us that the spiritual ignorance that gripped Israel in Isaiah’s day seized Christians in his day—and it still grips Christians 20 centuries later. Feel-good sermons, enjoyable “worship” services, and rites, rituals, and ceremonies will NOT solve this problem—they exacerbate it!

“[God] will have all men to be saved…” (1 Timothy 2:4a). Do you want this New Year to count for God’s glory? First, you need to get saved from sins and hell! You need to become a Christian by trusting in and relying on Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection as sufficient payment for your sins (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). That is only part of God’s will for you, for 1 Timothy 2:4b continues, “[God] will have all men… to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” Now, God’s will for your Christian life is daily, personal Bible study to renew your mind, so your faith in those verses can cause God to work in your life—it will be His life, thus making you “perfect [spiritually mature], throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16,17).

Today’s Scripture urges us to buy back the time Satan has robbed from God (time created for God’s glory). By faith, we need to make that time glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by applying His Word, particularly Paul’s epistles of Romans through Philemon, to our lives. Have a good year in Christ! 🙂

The Person of the Year

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…” (Philippians 2:9,10a KJV).

Let us praise the 2023 Person of the Year—our Lord Jesus Christ!

Society’s most stressful time of year, the Christmas Season, is winding down. The year 2023 is nearly over, and a new year, 2024, will dawn soon. At this time every year, various groups and publications feature their particular choice for “Person of the Year.” Whether a chief of state, a philanthropist, a religious leader, a distinguished author or scientist, a television or radio personality, or some other “professional” who impacted society in a negative or positive way the most during the past year, they are all still people with limitations and frailties. One can accomplish all sorts of praiseworthy, generous, and awe-inspiring feats. However, what carries the most weight is the attitude, the heart, underlying the action, not the action. Was it Jesus Christ, or simply the flesh?

The one single event in history that pleased God the Father most was when His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, went by faith in His Word, to an awful Roman cross to suffer the worst possible and most graphic death a human ever experienced, to pay for our sins. “Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11). It is through that finished crosswork of Jesus Christ that He is still doing mighty works, 20 centuries later. How our Lord Jesus Christ has saved countless souls from sins and hell this past year, and how He has saved innumerable Christian souls from false doctrine and spiritual ruin.

Jesus Christ, who in death defeated His greatest enemy (Satan), was raised by God the Father and is now the ascended and glorified Lord Jesus Christ (today’s Scripture). Saints, may we ever thank and praise our Saviour Jesus Christ for what He has done for us, what He has done with us, and what He will do with us next year… and all the countless ages thereafter….

NOTE: Saints, believe it or not, we close yet another year of grace ministry. Thank you for your continued prayer and encouragement these last 12 months. We surely needed it. While we have come so very far, we still have so much more ground to cover, so much more sound Bible doctrine to learn and believe, and we look forward to serving you here for at least another year (provided our Lord Jesus Christ wills it). So, with that, I sign off for 2023. See you in 2024! 🙂
