Paul and The Pause of Prophecy #6

“Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him” (Acts 13:9 KJV).

How is the Apostle Paul connected to the pause of prophecy?

Read Psalm 2: “[1] Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? [2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, [3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. [4] He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. [5] Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. [6] Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.” The order of the prophetic program was: (1) the Lord Jesus Christ’s First Coming with consequent rejection and crucifixion (verses 1-3; cf. Acts 4:24-28), (2) Father God responding in wrath and war during Daniel’s 70th Week and Christ’s Second Coming (verses 4,5), and (3) Christ’s Millennial Kingdom Reign in the Earth (verse 6).

Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, knew the outpouring of wrath and war were to follow the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (see Acts 2:16-21,34-36; cf. Joel 2:28-32). Stephen, also filled with the Holy Ghost, finally saw the wrath just moments away, with the one-year extension of mercy on Israel of Acts chapters 1–7 now expired (cf. Luke 13:6-9; cf. Matthew 12:31,32)! See Acts chapter 7: “[51] Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. [52] Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:…. [55] But he [Stephen], being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, [56] And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.”

Unlike Psalm 110:1 (cf. Acts 2:34-36), Christ was no longer “sitting,” but “standing” in preparation to return and destroy His enemies! Yet, no wrath came….

How is the Apostle Paul connected to the pause of prophecy?

In forming the nation Israel, the LORD God was creating a kingdom of priests to be His channel of salvation and blessing to the Gentiles (the Abrahamic Covenant of Genesis 12:1-3). However, national Israel languished in unbelief, sin, and self-righteousness—culminating in Jesus Christ’s crucifixion (Matthew through John). By early Acts, Israel was still overwhelmingly unrepentant and unbelieving, relentlessly refusing the resurrected Christ and the Holy Spirit’s ministry.

Observe the Apostle Peter’s sermon to Israel on the Day of Pentecost, Acts chapter 2: “[22] Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: [23] Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: [24] Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it….

“[32] This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. [33] Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. [34] For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, [35] Until I make thy foes thy footstool. [36] Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. [37] Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? [38] Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

As verses 34-36 indicate, Divine judgment upon Israel is approaching….

How is the Apostle Paul connected to the pause of prophecy?

Be sure to notice the following verses that Paul wrote during the Acts period. Romans chapter 11: “[7] What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded. [8] (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear; ) unto this day. [9] And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them: [10] Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

“[11] I say then, Have they [Israel] stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. [12] Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? [13] For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: [14] If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them….

“[25] For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. [26] And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: [27] For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.”

As opposed to the LORD God reaching the nations through redeemed Israel as prophecy foretold (Isaiah 60:1-3, Zechariah 8:20-23, and so on), He is presently evangelizing the world through Paul’s ministry and Israel’s blinding, fall, and diminishing (Romans 11:11-14). Here is the pause in prophecy….

How is the Apostle Paul connected to the pause of prophecy?

Our Authorized Version King James Bible refers to “Saul” (of Tarsus) 22 times—and only in Acts (Acts 7:58; Acts 8:1,3; Acts 9:1,4,8,11,17,19,22,24,26; Acts 11:25,30; Acts 12:25; Acts 13:1,2,7,9; Acts 22:7,13; Acts 26:14). From today’s Scripture onward, the Bible begins designating him “Paul”  (158 times total). Interestingly, the Apostle Paul never refers to himself as “Saul” in any of his writings, Romans through Philemon; he always uses “Paul.” Why?

Remember, he was both a Hebrew citizen (Acts 26:4; Philippians 3:5) and a Roman citizen (Acts 16:37,38; Acts 22:25-27,29; Acts 23:27). Thus, he was given two names at his birth. “Saul” is Hebrew (meaning “asked, desired, wished”), whereas “Paul” is Latin or Roman. You can see the Greek form of his name “Paulus” in Acts 13:7—although this was the deputy or governor of the island of Cyprus. From the time of Acts 13:9 (today’s Scripture), the Apostle’s Gentile (Roman/Latin/Greek) name begins to take preeminence in the Bible record and “Saul,” his Jewish name, becomes less used.

In the context of today’s Scripture, we find the first miracle of Saul/Paul as documented in the Bible. This miracle illustrates his ministry. Re-read Acts 13:1-12. A Gentile (Sergius Paulus) expresses desire to hear the Word of God from Barnabas and Saul/Paul, but an unbelieving Jew (Elymas/Barjesus) interferes by refusing them entrance. Elymas/Barjesus represents his apostate nation Israel under Satan’s influence, obstructing Paul’s apostleship from reaching the nations of the world (check 1 Thessalonians 2:14-16). Responding to Elymas/Barjesus, Paul curses him with temporary physical blindness—which corresponds to Israel’s momentary spiritual blindness as Paul’s ministry converts the Gentiles (Romans 11:7-14,25-27). Observe it well: it is in this setting that the Bible begins switching his name from “Saul” to “Paul” (Acts 13:9).

Doing a little research, we gather that “Paul” in Greek is “Paulos” (meaning “little”). It is closely related to “pauo,” which is defined as “to pause, stop, desist, cease.” God the Holy Spirit is communicating through the miracle of Acts 13:1-12 that He has paused Israel’s prophetic program to begin our mystery program….

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read this excerpt from the Sermon on the Mount, Christ’s Kingdom Constitution of Matthew chapters 5–7. It is Israel’s prospect in the ages to come, and complements today’s Scripture: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). Also, Matthew 13:43: “Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Our parallel passage as members of the Church the Body of Christ is Philippians 2:13-16, what we read earlier.

Whether the nation Israel living in accordance with the Law of Moses (time past), or we the Church the Body of Christ conducting ourselves in agreement with the Pauline epistles of Romans through Philemon (but now), or the redeemed nation Israel functioning under the New Covenant or Law of Messiah (ages to come), it is the life of the one true (Creator) God being revealed in and through His people. He is thus glorified in His creation. Yet, if they do not walk in their respective identities, they will give an occasion for Satan’s people to sneer, laugh, and discredit them.

Indeed, it can be spiritual calligraphy—God the Holy Spirit’s attractive handwriting on the pages of Scripture being brought into the very details of human existence. Or, it can be spiritual cacography—hideous words and repulsive deeds that are not even worth mentioning or thinking about. To state it another way, either it will be a “sinner’s gospel” or a “scoffer’s creed.” We would do well to remember grace living as taught in Romans 6:1-14, Ephesians 5:1-20, Colossians 1:9-13, and Titus 2:11-15. It is our choice to allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, so any poor decisions we make will not be God’s fault. May we choose spiritual calligraphy! 🙂

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read Titus chapter 2: “[1] But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: [2] That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. [3] The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; [4] That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, [5] To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

“[6] Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. [7] In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, [8] Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. [9] Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; [10] Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

“[11] For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, [12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; [13] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; [14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. [15] These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.”

Paul wrote how members of the Body of Christ (especially young women) should carefully guard how they live, lest unbelievers “blaspheme [speak against] the word of God” (verse 5). Similarly, servants (employees) should “adorn [decorate, make attractive/appealing] the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (verse 10). Such precautions prevent hypocrisy (thereby avoiding ancient Israel’s sins of Romans 2:21-24).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

It is no secret the Corinthians were the worldliest, most carnal (fleshly) believers in the entire canon of Scripture. They thought and acted like people who were lost and on their merry way to Hell! What makes it all the more ridiculous is that Paul had spent some two years teaching them the Gospel of Grace and grace living (see Acts 18:11,18)! One of their primary sins was abusing spiritual gifts—especially speaking in tongues. Three chapters of 1 Corinthians are therefore devoted to spiritual gifts (read chapters 12–14).

Consider 1 Corinthians 14:21-23: “In the law it is written [Isaiah 28:11,12], With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad [crazy, insane, lunatic]?”

The Corinthian assembly of Christians met in a building that shared a wall with the Jewish synagogue of Corinth. Read Acts 18:1-8, noting that “joined hard” in verse 7 references the common wall between them. Since the Corinthian saints were abusing the spiritual gift of tongues by engaging in gibberish or ecstatic utterances (just like the pagans in their worship services!), that spiritual gift was not serving its purpose of reaching unsaved Jews next-door as the Spirit of God had intended! It was the spirit of man trying to counterfeit God’s work, and even lost Jews could see the silliness! Instead of attracting unsaved Israel to Paul’s ministry and message, such frivolity was repelling them, keeping them antagonistic toward the Lord Jesus Christ whom those spiritual gifts should have glorified.

Exalting human “wisdom,” Corinth abounded with spiritual cacography, ugly handwriting, hideous words and deeds….

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read Deuteronomy 4:5-8, Moses’ speech to Israel: “Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?”

God intended Israel to display His wisdom for all the Gentiles to see and admire. This was especially important since we will remember these Gentiles or nations were walking in the foolishness of satanic darkness and spiritual ignorance (Genesis 11:1-9; Acts 14:15-17; Acts 17:16-31; Acts 26:17,18; Romans 1:20-32; Ephesians 2:1-3,11,12; Ephesians 4:17-19). The nation Israel, however, did not value and esteem their Hebrew Bible (our Old Testament): they joined the Gentiles in their darkness!

Notice how, some 600 years before Christ, the LORD God spoke these words through Jeremiah the Prophet: “For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish [stupid!] children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge” (Jeremiah 4:22). Also consider Jeremiah 5:21,23: “Hear now this, O foolish [same Hebrew word translated ‘sottish’] people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:…. But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.”

While true of the ancient nation Israel, the Holy Spirit could also compose these Jeremiah verses to and about the professing church and even the genuine church. Spiritual folly and stupidity reign supreme in the majority of our “Christian” schools, local “Christian” assemblies, and “Christian” homes….

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Here is God’s grace expressed in and through members of the Church the Body of Christ: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain” (Philippians 2:13-16).

“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid [May God never let that happen!]” (Romans 6:11-15).

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory” (Colossians 3:1-4). “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness” (Ephesians 4:17-19).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Although the prophetic program anticipated the salvation of Gentiles or the nations through Israel’s rise to kingdom glory (today’s Scripture), God was withholding a secret that He did not reveal until the Apostle Paul’s ministry (beginning in Acts chapter 9).

Read Romans chapter 11: “[11] I say then, Have they [Israel] stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. [12] Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? [13] For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: [14] If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. [15] For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?”

Whereas Israel in prophecy was to be a light to the unbelieving Gentiles, now Gentiles in mystery are to be a light to unbelieving Israel. This was especially true during the Acts transitional period, when Paul’s Gentile converts were advised not to use their liberty under grace in ways that would offend unbelieving Israel. Acts chapter 15: “[19] Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: [20] But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. [21] For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day…. [28] For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; [29] That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.”

Alas, as with unbelieving Israel in time past, so Gentiles in the but now engaged in spiritual cacography….
