The Clever Axe #3

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Matthew 7:15 KJV).

Observe the following: “The forest was shrinking, but the trees kept voting for the axe, for the axe cleverly convinced the trees that his wooden handle made him one of them.” While written about duplicitous politicians, it is also practical instruction for religious leaders and about religious leaders.

“Fruit inspecting” is one of religion’s “hot topics.” Ripping from context Matthew 7:16 and Matthew 7:20 (the context of today’s Scripture), self-righteous churchgoers look for “signs” of salvation among their peers. “Ye shall know them by their fruits…. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” It has been therefore proclaimed, “Unless you have fruits, you are a fake Christian!” This is a gross distortion of the passage.

Today’s Scripture heads the pericope of Matthew 7:15-23 (verses to be studied in conjunction). The subject is “false prophets,” preachers speaking wrong information. Verses 16-19: “…Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” A good tree (symbolic of the true prophet) cannot produce evil/corrupt fruit (error). Neither can a corrupt tree (representative of the false prophet) yield good fruit (truth). To distinguish true prophets from false prophets, we must inspect the prophet’s “fruit” (contents of the message). “Fruit-inspecting” is not so much looking for good works as it is looking for good words!

Re-read the dictum: “The forest was shrinking, but the trees kept voting for the axe, for the axe cleverly convinced the trees that his wooden handle made him one of them.” Many such “axes” lead our churches and “Christian” schools, though they know and use Bible words and Scriptural phrases that assist them in blending in with the trees (God’s people)… as the axe’s wooden handle helps it “identify with” the trees it decimates. Just as false prophets corrupted ancient Israel (about whom Jesus warned in the Sermon on the Mount!), so “Christian” leaders everywhere still destroy God’s people with their manmade opinions and traditions. They are wolves in sheep’s clothing….

Observe the following: “The forest was shrinking, but the trees kept voting for the axe, for the axe cleverly convinced the trees that his wooden handle made him one of them.” While written about duplicitous politicians, it is also practical instruction for religious leaders and about religious leaders.

How frightening it is that voters are frequently unable to express specific, reasonable justification for their choice of candidates. Other than silence, the only “defenses” offered are along the lines of, “He or she promised the public this free service or those free goods. I saw internet videos of this person or that person acting like everyone else. This man or woman is a great speaker.” You can pose the same question to religious people… except apply it to their pastors and teachers. What you will hear is, “This person is funny. He or she is kind. That person has a large following. Here is why I sit under his or her teaching.” Very rarely is the criterion, “He or she teaches sound Bible doctrine, and I learn such valuable information there.”

The phrase “wolf in sheep’s clothing” is indeed derived from the English Bible—specifically today’s Scripture. Jesus’ audience was of an agrarian or agriculture-based lifestyle. The Jewish people were well acquainted with raising sheep, and how shepherds were to be constantly vigilant of wolves (the sheep’s natural predator). What made such wolves exceptionally dangerous was when they were no longer perceived to be a threat. Nevertheless, they were “ravening” (related to “ravaging”), voracious, hungry, or greedy; thus, they would go to great lengths, they would stop at nothing, to fill their bellies!

Sheep naturally follow each other and stay in a group because they feel they have “safety in numbers.” Among humans, this is known as “herd mentality,” people blindly conforming to a principle simply due to the fact many others have adopted it. However, such sheep (both animals and people) are in grave danger if the “sheep” they are following turns out to be a “wolf in sheep’s clothing!” The prey realizes, when it is usually too late, that his neighbor was really the enemy in disguise….

There is no question that the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5–7) is extremely popular in Christendom. The “Our Father” Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13)—erroneously known as “the Lord’s Prayer”—and the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) are particularly appealing to church members who mindlessly quote these passages without any real meaningful understanding of their dispensational context. Had they known from these chapters what they should have known, they would be shocked beyond belief!

Part of the Sermon on the Mount is Matthew 7:15-23, today’s Scripture and its subsequent verses. Carefully read them, perhaps a few times: “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

Ironically, the individuals and institutions who habitually run to the Sermon on the Mount for authority and teaching are often the same whom it condemns as false (!)….

Arrayed in Hypocrisy

“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity” (Matthew 23:27,28 KJV).

“Looks can be deceiving” is not only true during Halloweentime, but confirmed year-round within Christendom.

Today is Halloween, when children dress up and feign themselves to be creatures they are not. Likewise, many church leaders today wear “Christian” garbs, but their ministries do not bring the Lord Jesus Christ glory and honor. They promote their denomination, and seek to perpetuate it, rather than serve and exalt the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. The Bible manifests these who appear to be good, as “wolves in sheep’s clothing.”

In today’s Scripture, Jesus Christ exposed Israel’s corrupt religious leaders who misled the nation in His day. In His Parable of the Tares, Matthew 13:24-30,37-43, Christ explained how just as He had sown good seed (wheat, believing Jews) in Israel, Satan had also sown tares/weeds (unbelieving Jews). Tares resemble wheat; unbelieving Jews resemble believing Jews. The unbelieving Pharisees and scribes, for instance, looked like God’s people (believing Israel). Judas Iscariot was another example of Satan’s tares—the apostles never realized who Judas really was until it was too late!

But Satan’s counterfeit believers are not confined to Israel’s program. Today, within local assemblies of the Body of Christ, there are people feigning themselves to be Christians: “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).

Beloved, beware of the church leaders who are arrayed in hypocrisy, “and avoid them” (Romans 16:17b). If their teaching does not agree with the rightly divided King James Bible, you have no business as a child of God to be listening to them.

What does the Bible say about devil possession?

A prevailing myth undergirding Christendom is the inherent notion that whatever God did before, He must still be doing today. This is but a child’s view of the Holy Scriptures. For nearly two millennia, religious tradition and emotions have clouded the judgment of hundreds upon hundreds of millions of churchgoers. Despite their fervor to “get busy for God,” they have virtually no understanding of what He is doing or has called them to do!

Remember, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Paul’s epistles, Romans through Philemon, detail God’s current dealings with man. We are living in “but now,” in contrast to “time past” and “the ages to come” (see Ephesians 2:7,11-13). These unique titles demarcate the changes in the way God relates to mankind. If we fail to “rightly divide” them, and most do, we have neither a hope nor a prayer in the world of ever understanding or enjoying the Bible!

Since “the Jews require a sign” (John 4:48; 1 Corinthians 1:22), signs accompanied the preaching of the Gospel of the Kingdom (Mark 16:20; Luke 8:1). Jesus healed the sick and cast out devils during Matthew to John; the 12 Apostles did likewise in early Acts. To prove to Israel how Paul’s ministry had replaced Peter’s ministry, God also enabled Paul to heal the sick and cast out devils during his Acts provoking ministry. However, when writing to and about us (the Church the Body of Christ), Paul never once issued any instructions to perform exorcisms. This is truly significant, for a drastic dispensational change has occurred! Exorcism has no place in this the Dispensation of Grace: there is absolutely nothing about casting out devils in the Pauline epistles of Romans to Philemon. Why? Brethren, there is one primary reason, and we would do well to recognize it….

What does the Bible say about devil possession?

Exorcism was practiced in the Bible before our Dispensation of Grace and will be performed after our Dispensation of Grace. Yet, does casting out devils fit God’s current dealings with man—in our Dispensation of Grace?

Doubtless, Christ commissioned Apostles and other preachers to drive out unclean spirits (Matthew 10:1,7-8; Mark 3:15; Mark 6:7; Mark 16:17; Luke 9:1,2; Luke 10:17-20). Such miracles were wrought in early Acts. “There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one” (Acts 5:16). “Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed” (Acts 8:5-7).

When Israel’s prophetic program gave way to our mystery program, Paul during his Acts “provoking ministry” was temporarily given the same miracle-working power Peter and the 11 Apostles of Israel exercised: “And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying [fortune-telling]: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour” (Acts 16:16-18). “And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them” (Acts 19:11,12).

What does the Bible say about devil possession?

Since national Israel refused the Lord Jesus Christ at His First Coming, but crucified Him in unbelief, she and her land of Canaan were never fully cleansed of Satan’s policy of evil. In other words, Christ was not allowed to drive out all unclean spirits from the Jewish people. Moreover, although the Apostles were given power to cast out devils (Matthew 10:1,7-8; Mark 3:15; Mark 6:7; Mark 16:17; Luke 9:1,2; cf. Luke 10:17-20), and they performed such exorcisms in early Acts (see Acts 5:16 and Acts 8:7), apostate or unbelieving Israel rejected the Holy Spirit’s ministry during those opening chapters of Acts. The Little Flock or believing remnant was persecuted, for their message not believed, which means Israel’s last state (devil possession) will be far worse than ever (re-read Matthew 12:43-45 and Luke 11:21-26).

The controversial commission of Mark 16:15-20 applies to early Acts (before our Dispensation of Grace) as well as the ages to come (after our Dispensation of Grace). “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;…” (Mark 16:17). Devil possession will be rampant under the Antichrist’s heathen religion during Daniel’s 70th Week (yet future from us), but Israel’s believing remnant is granted power to drive out evil spirits (thus validating their Gospel of the Kingdom as did the Little Flock in early Acts 2,000 years before).

See Satan’s future activity—the devil-worship and workings of devils—in passages such as 2 Thessalonians 2:8-12; Revelation 2:9,13,14,24; Revelation 3:9; Revelation 9:20,21; Revelation 12:7-10; Revelation 16:13,14; and Revelation 18:2. As in time past (Matthew to John, and Acts), so Satan again labors to possess and contaminate Israel (to prevent God’s earthly kingdom from being founded, moved from Christ’s First Coming to His Second Coming of Revelation chapters 19–20). Except, in the ages to come, Satan corrupts Israel to such an extent that the devil possessions of Matthew to early Acts will be comparatively minor (!)….

What does the Bible say about devil possession?

Remember, “But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you” (Matthew 12:28). “But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you” (Luke 11:20). As proof of God’s kingdom coming to the Earth—the very kingdom of the Gospel of the Kingdom—the Lord Jesus cast out devils. This was fulfilled prophecy. See Zechariah 13:2: “And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.” When Christ reigns on the Earth, Satan and his devils are removed.

Revelation 20:1-4: “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”

Yet, before Israel rises to kingdom glory, the nation itself must be purged of all unbelievers. During Daniel’s 70th Week, God will thus let loose evil spirits on Israel at an unprecedented level….

What does the Bible say about devil possession?

After Israel’s apostate religious leaders ridiculed Him for casting out devils (Matthew 12:22-24; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:14-16), the Lord Jesus answered them. “But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you” (Matthew 12:28). “But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you” (Luke 11:20). Christ was drawing on the power of the Holy Spirit to perform these exorcisms, so their speaking against Christ’s casting out of devils meant they were speaking negatively of the Holy Spirit.

Observe these grave words the Lord issued to His detractors: “Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come” (Matthew 12:31,32; cf. Mark 3:28-30).

Since lost Israel habitually resisted Christ’s exorcisms by criticizing them, He issued another solemn warning: “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation” (Matthew 12:43-45; cf. Luke 11:21-26).

Failing to let Christ completely cleanse them of devils, Israel will become even more polluted with evil spirits in the ages to come….

What does the Bible say about devil possession?

During Christ’s earthly ministry, not only did Israel have a devil problem, the Gentiles or nations were under Satan’s power too. This “without God” status of these Gentiles in time past is found in Acts 14:16; Acts 17:30; Romans 1:18-32; Ephesians 2:11,12; and Ephesians 4:17-19.

Notice Matthew 15:22-28, the Gentile lady whose daughter was possessed with an evil spirit: “And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.” (Read also Mark 7:25-30, the analogous passage.)

Jews are the “children,” Gentiles are the “dogs,” and that non-Jewish woman knew how Messiah Jesus was sent to bless the children of Israel “first” (check Mark 7:27). She recognized her unworthiness, and how Christ had a ministry to Israel only. Therefore, she humbly placed herself in a position to receive the “overflow” spilling off Israel’s table of blessing. Imagine: this Gentile woman was a believer, in stark contrast to unbelieving (“lost”) Israel! The exorcism of that non-Jewish woman’s daughter pictures the salvation and blessing of God going to the world through Israel’s rise to kingdom glory (cf. Isaiah 60:1-3; Zechariah 8:20-23; Matthew 28:18-20)….
