“Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21 KJV).

Is there really a “mis-translation” in the King James Bible here?

Due to a miserable (!) failure to rightly divide the Word of Truth, today’s Scripture and context (verses 20,21) have been twisted out of shape to teach something they do not teach and never did teach. They do not describe God’s current dealings with man at all, but typify what He did with Israel in time past. Peter’s ministry—an extension of Christ’s earthly ministry—concerns Israel rising to kingdom glory, God’s salvation and blessing going to the world (Gentiles) in Israel’s literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic kingdom (Isaiah 60:1-3; Zechariah 8:20-23; Matthew 28:18-20; Luke 2:32; Luke 24:47; John 4:42; Acts 1:6; Acts 3:24-26). However, Paul’s ministry is God’s salvation and blessing going to the world (Gentiles) through Israel’s temporary fall and without her kingdom (Romans 11:11-14). Though Christendom has neglected it for 20 centuries, we dare not miss this important distinction!

Just because God did something in time past does not mean He is doing it in the but now, and just because He is doing it in the but now does not mean He will keep doing it in the ages to come. Though He is not growing His earthly people (Israel) now, Romans 11:25-29 indicates He will return to that after He closes our program and completes us the Church the Body of Christ: “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.”

We are not Israel, and we have not replaced Israel, so we are wise in our own conceits (we think we are someone we are not) if we believe we are Israel or that we have replaced Israel….

Is there really a “mis-translation” in the King James Bible here?

Read Peter’s sermon directed to unbelieving Israel: “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began…. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities” (Acts 3:19-21,25,26). See Israel’s rise to kingdom glory!

Contrast this with Paul’s words: “I say then, Have they [Israel] stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:…” (Romans 11:11-13). See Israel’s fall!

With much of Christendom regarding Paul as “the twelfth apostle” (Paul being Judas Iscariot’s successor) or Paul being an extension/supplement of the 12 (Matthias being Iscariot’s replacement), they have blended whatever God is doing in the “but now” with what He did in “time past.” Hopeless confusion has resulted, for they believe, “There is but one gospel in the Bible,” “only one church in the Bible,” and so on. This is not “rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). It is mixing distinct information God has separated—and then changing or denying verses because they know of no other way to resolve the incompatibilities. That is exactly what happened with Luke 17:20,21 (today’s Scripture and its context). Nothing is wrong with the Scriptures; what is incorrect is our traditional approach to them….

Is there really a “mis-translation” in the King James Bible here?

Read the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree, Luke 13:6-9: “He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.”

National Israel refused to repent and trust Jesus as Messiah-King (Gospel of the Kingdom) during His three years of earthly ministry, so Father God gave a one-year extension of mercy. The kingdom is delayed in prophecy, His return not occurring until at least one more year after His Ascension. In early Acts, He would have come back in flaming fire and vengeance within eight years or so after Calvary (Daniel’s 70th Week included) (see Acts 7:55,56; cf. Psalm 110:1; Acts 2:34-36; Acts 3:19-21). Note how Spirit-filled Peter recognized Christ was resurrected “to sit on [David’s] throne” (Acts 2:29-32; cf. Acts 1:6).

Moreover, there is a second delay in Christ restoring Israel’s literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic kingdom—a mystery (secret) postponement connected to Paul’s ministry. That Pauline aspect is seldom recognized. Since what God is doing now through Paul’s ministry is not what He did before Paul, denominationalists soften those differences like this: If there is no literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic, Israeli kingdom now—and it has been 2,000 years since Christ’s earthly ministry without such a kingdom—there must have never been any promise of restoring that literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic, Israeli kingdom. WRONG!

Paul’s ministry is “the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, but now is made manifest…” (Romans 16:25,26). What God is doing today in the mystery program is totally separate and distinct from the prophetic program. It is the unbelief that remains the same….

Is there really a “mis-translation” in the King James Bible here?

Believing Israel—the Messianic Church, Little Flock, or believing remnant—received Messiah-King Jesus by trusting Him in their heart (“the kingdom of God is within you”). They had already admitted their sin problem and believed in Him for redemption. However, unbelieving Israel sought mere political deliverance, not spiritual salvation. This was the Pharisees in the context of today’s Scripture. Their self-righteousness did not allow them to believe they had sin or needed spiritual salvation! Now that they refused to trust Him in their heart, He would not reign literally, physically, and visibly (David’s throne restored—see Acts 1:6) until after they formally rejected Him at Calvary’s cross.

Read Luke 7:19-35. John the Baptist, whom King Herod Antipas had imprisoned (Luke 3:19,20), could not understand why the Lord Jesus had not yet rescued him by overthrowing that evil ruler. The answer is simple: apostate Israel’s unbelief postpones God’s literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic kingdom. With John the Baptist (Messiah’s forerunner or announcer) about to die by beheading, and Messiah Himself preparing for His crucifixion, there will be no literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic kingdom until Messiah returns to His Father in Heaven to bring His kingdom back to Earth at His Second Coming.

Skip ahead to Luke 19:11,12. Jesus declares He is departing to His Father to receive the kingdom but He will come back with it: “And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.” Verses 13-14 cover His ascension (His leaving Earth) all the way to His Second Coming. His return is verses 15-27, with Jewish unbelievers destroyed when He comes back.

The key to today’s Scripture is verse 25: “But first [before His return to rule as King] must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.” Again, the tree of Calvary must precede the throne of David….

Is there really a “mis-translation” in the King James Bible here?

It was not simply God would become a man, Jesus Christ incarnated, to instantly sit on David’s throne. The nation Israel was to receive Him in faith first. Yet, for three years, only a believing remnant trusted Him. “He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:11-13).

“Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32). This believing remnant would inherit the kingdom, not the entire nation (which was comfortable in unbelief!). By the time of today’s Scripture, Israel’s unbelieving religious leaders were already plotting Jesus’ execution. “Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him” (Matthew 12:14). “And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him” (Mark 3:6). “And they were filled with madness [craziness!]; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus” (Luke 6:11).

Re-read today’s Scripture and context: “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you” (verses 20,21). After almost three years of earthly ministry during which they relentlessly rejected Him, refusing to have Him reign over them as Messiah-King, why would they suddenly be looking for a literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic kingdom? It was obvious He would first have to die on Calvary’s cross as a rejected monarch (check Luke 9:18-22,31,43-45; Luke 11:53,54; Luke 18:31-34). The kingdom would be delayed until after His crucifixion—not cancelled.

Hearts of unbelief such as this resulted in His literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic kingdom being held off until His Second Coming….

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you” (John 14:26 KJV).

One of the lesser-known purposes of Christ’s earthly ministry was that He trained 12 men to continue His work once He returned to His Heavenly Father!

With national Israel languishing in unbelief during the early Acts period, persecution against the 12 Apostles (Matthias included) begins to escalate. Immediately following the healing of the lame man at the Jerusalem Temple (Acts 3:1-11), Peter delivers a public sermon to attach a meaning to that miracle (verses 12-26). As the Holy Spirit speaks through Peter to the crowds of the Jewish people who have gathered, He opens their understanding to see with spiritual eyes this illustration of the blessings of Israel’s kingdom restoration (which Christ, now resurrected, will bring when He comes back).

In the opening verses of chapter 4, Israel’s religious leaders are grieved (worried) because “unauthorized” Peter and John are teaching the people and preaching through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. (These priests and the Sadducees deny resurrection—Matthew 22:23; Mark 12:18; Luke 20:27; Acts 23:6-8.) Peter and John are arrested, jailed, and stand trial the following day, during which trial Peter delivers another sermon.

Concentrate on Acts 4:13 now: “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” Peter and John were just fishermen, who, from a natural-man viewpoint, were “unlearned” (without formal Jewish religious training) and “ignorant” (uneducated; in Greek, “idiotes!”). How could these “lowly peons” be important enough to be connected to the healing of the lame man? What “scholarly” education had they obtained to possess such wisdom and teach/preach so powerfully? Israel’s unbelieving religious leaders simply cannot fathom it! When asked, Peter and John freely confess that “they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). The Lord Jesus has trained them well, and the Holy Spirit is building on what they learned during Christ’s earthly ministry….

One of the lesser-known purposes of Christ’s earthly ministry was that He trained 12 men to continue His work once He returned to His Heavenly Father!

Though they forsook Him in Gethsemane, the Lord restored the 11 Apostles to ministry during the 40 days following His resurrection (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20; Luke 24:45-53; John 20:21-23; John 21:1-25; Acts 1:1-12). During this time, He also instructed them from the Old Testament Scriptures how Judas Iscariot’s vacated office needed to be filled—and He ultimately chose Matthias to occupy that twelfth position (Acts 1:15-26; cf. Luke 24:44,45). Approximately a week after Christ’s ascension, the Holy Ghost comes down upon the Little Flock on the Day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2).

As before with Christ’s earthly ministry, the Apostle Peter calls Israel to repentance or change in mind—except, now in early Acts, the crucifixion is a further development in their unbelief and rejection of Messiah. All the words Jesus spoke, and all the miracles He performed during Matthew to John, are on Peter’s mind as the Holy Spirit brings those events to his memory (Acts 2:22-24,32,36; cf. Acts 3:13-21; Acts 4:10-13; Acts 5:29-32; et cetera; cf. Acts 10:34-43).

Scanning those chapters of early Acts, we discover how the 12’s ministry is an extension of Christ’s earthly ministry. Individual Jewish salvation, Israel’s national conversion, and the nation’s subsequent rise to kingdom glory to bless all nations or Gentiles, are still the primary issues (Acts 3:19-26). Miraculous demonstrations to confirm that word—miracles to preview the kingdom blessings—still play an integral part in God’s ministry (Mark 16:17,18; Acts 2:43; Acts 3:1-12; Acts 4:7-17; Acts 5:1-16; Hebrews 2:3-5; Hebrews 6:4,5). These ordinary, weak, fallible men have been “endued [gifted, empowered] with power from on high” (Luke 24:49), exactly as Christ foretold in Acts 1:8: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

Nevertheless, something drastic interrupted their fulfillment of that commission….

One of the lesser-known purposes of Christ’s earthly ministry was that He trained 12 men to continue His work once He returned to His Heavenly Father!

Israel’s opposition to the Lord Jesus Christ gradually increased during those three years. He ordained 12 Apostles in Matthew chapter 10. Israel’s unbelief culminated in chapter 12 (see verses 14-21), with the nation’s religious leaders plotting to murder Him. It is here that His public ministry begins to close and a private ministry commences.

By the time of chapter 13 (cf. Mark chapter 4 and Luke chapter 8), He preaches to the multitudes in parables (riddles, stories with hidden meanings), but, in private, He explains all of these parables to His disciples—especially His Apostles. Note particularly Matthew 13:1-17, Mark 4:1-13, and Luke 8:1-10. These parables are spoken in light of His soon departure—His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. His First Coming will end with His return to His Heavenly Father. While He is gone, the parables are in force all the way to His Second Coming and subsequent Millennial Kingdom.

In the context of today’s Scripture (John chapters 13–16)—what is known as the “Upper-Room Sermon”—Christ is having a final meal (Passover) with His Apostles and other members of the Little Flock. He is then on His way with them to the Garden of Gethsemane (chapter 18) following His “high priestly” prayer of chapter 17. As He makes numerous references to the Holy Spirit’s coming in Acts chapter 2 (cf. John 14:16-18,26 [today’s Scripture]; John 15:26,27; John 16:7-15), He is preparing those 12 Apostles to go on without Him as the Holy Spirit arrives to take over His ministry. They will draw on the Holy Spirit’s power to know where they are on the Bible timeline and be able to preach to Israel in early Acts all that they heard during those three years of Matthew to John. Indeed, the Lord Jesus Christ has been training replacements, and they now conduct their ministry as the Book of Acts opens….

The “Terrible” God #4

“Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the LORD thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible” (Deuteronomy 7:21 KJV).

The Authorized Version features eight references to the LORD God being “terrible.” Why?

Go to Psalm 47:1-4: “[To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah] O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph. For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth. He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet. He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.” The Psalmist writes about the world rejoicing as God’s literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic, Israeli kingdom is founded. King Jesus Christ reigns victoriously as the “terrible” “LORD most high!”

Now, Psalm 68:32-35: “Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the LORD; Selah: To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice. Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds. O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.” This is Christ’s Second Coming leading up to that earthly kingdom of God. Again, the LORD is labeled as “terrible.”

Finally, Jeremiah 20:11-13: “But the LORD is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten. But, O LORD of hosts, that triest the righteous, and seest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I opened my cause. Sing unto the LORD, praise ye the LORD: for he hath delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evildoers.” Unbelievers have abused the Prophet Jeremiah. Holding a pity party, he cries out for justice to the LORD “a mighty terrible one!”

Let us review what we have studied up to this point….

A Prayer According to God’s Will

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;” (1 Timothy 2:1-3 KJV).

On this United States’ National Day of Prayer, we pray you pray according to the Lord Jesus Christ’s will for today!

Today, religious people—the general public, clergy, and government officials—will assemble nationwide, like they do every year, and pray for spiritual and moral revival of the “Christian” (?) United States of America. We commend their noble efforts, but God’s Word says there will be no godly revival of any of the world’s Gentile nations until Jesus Christ returns to earth at His Second Coming (Isaiah 11:9; Isaiah 59:20–60:3; Zechariah 8:20-23; Revelation 11:15; et cetera).

The LORD’s words to King Solomon are often quoted on this day: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Friends, this is certainly God’s Word, but has nothing to do with Gentiles in the United States in the Dispensation of Grace. This verse has a context often overlooked—the nation Israel under the Mosaic Law, praying in relation to God’s Temple in Jerusalem (verses 15,16). Actually, that Temple was destroyed over 19 centuries ago! Unlike Israel, the United States was never a divinely-founded nation. The American people as a whole are not God’s people like Israel was.

Rather than praying 2 Chronicles 7:14, remember today’s Scripture (God’s Word to us Gentiles). The verse following today’s Scripture says, “[God] Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). Pray for those in authority, that they would trust Jesus Christ alone as their personal Saviour, and then grow in His Word to them so they can make wise decisions on behalf of the people they govern.
