The Body of Christ at the Second Coming?

Friday, April 27, 2012

“And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean” (Revelation 19:14 KJV).

Today’s Scripture and its context (verses 11-21) describe the literal, physical, and visible return of our Lord Jesus Christ to planet earth. According to today’s Scripture, at Jesus Christ’s Second Coming, He is accompanied by “the armies which were in heaven,” individuals “clothed in fine linen, white and clean.” Who are these creatures?

While today’s Scripture is often assumed to be referring to us (the Church the Body of Christ), Jesus Christ provides the correct interpretation regarding His Second Coming: “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory” (Matthew 25:31). The creatures described in today’s Scripture are angels, not us: angels wear white clothes (Mark 16:5; Acts 1:10).

At the rapture (which could happen at any moment), God will secretly and instantly will remove from earth all people who have trusted exclusively in Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour, those who have relied completely on Christ’s dying for their sins, His burial, and His resurrection for their justification (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Paul describes the rapture in two main passages: 1 Corinthians 15:51-58 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18.

If God will one day remove us (the Body of Christ) from the earth, would it make any sense for us to return to earth at His Second Coming? No, it does not, for we the Church the Body of Christ belong in the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3; Ephesians 2:6,7; Colossians 3:1; 2 Timothy 4:18). God will give us bodies “eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1-5): our glorified bodies will not be meant to function on earth.

At His Second Coming, Jesus Christ will be coming for Israel: we have no relation to that event. Beginning at the rapture and down through the ages of eternity future, we, the Body of Christ, will function in heaven. We will have no need to ever return to earth: earth will be Israel’s territory.

Grace and peace! What a privilege to be an ambassador for the risen Christ here on WordPress! I am a Pauline dispensationalist Christian saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus plus nothing! My goal is to "have all men saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:3,4). I seek to preach Jesus Christ crucified for our sins, buried, and raised again for our justification as the only way to salvation. Also, I seek to edify and perfect the saints using dispensational Bible study and the Authorized Version King James Bible!

  1. Shawn, I had not heard Revelation 19:14 interpreted this way before so I decided to study it further. I read the whole passage to keep it in context and found that not only does verse 8 use the exact same descriptive words as verse 14, it also tells us who this army is.

    Revelation 19:7-8
7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

    Revelation 19:14
And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

I am open to correction if I have missed something here but as far as I can see, this passage tells us the army is the church.

Grace and Blessings in Christ Jesus!

    1. Hello Coreen. I’m glad I got you to read the Bible on your own, and I’m pleased to see that you’re thinking about what was written!!!

We don’t want to confuse those wearing white garments in Revelation 19:7-8 with those wearing white garments in verse 14; here’s why. Verses 7 and 8 are actually talking about believing Jews who are here on the earth: notice verse 7 says these individuals are “the [Lamb’s] wife.” God always referred to Israel as His wife (see Hosea chapter 2, which especially talks about Israel as an unfaithful/idolatrous wife to JEHOVAH). Isaiah 54:5 says to Israel, “For thy Maker is thine husband.” Jeremiah 3:20: “Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD….” Jeremiah 2:32: “Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people [Israel] have forgotten me days without number.”

      Jeremiah 31
“31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:”

There are other verses, but I hope that those will suffice to show you Israel is God’s wife. Revelation 19:7-8 refers to “the Lamb’s wife;” this is believing Israel, not us–the Bible never calls the Body of Christ “the Bride of Christ” (that is religious tradition). Believing Jews who will survive the Tribulation will stand on earth and see Jesus Christ return at His Second Coming (see Zechariah 12:10, 13:8-9). These believing Jews are “the Lamb’s wife,” who are waiting to be married to Jesus Christ (just as Israel was “married” to God in the Old Testament). This is why Revelation 19:7-8 says “his wife made herself ready”–these believing Jews who survived the Trib are preparing for Christ’s coming FOR them, to usher them into His earthly kingdom.

With that said, those who are clothed with linen white and clean in Revelation 19:14 CANNOT be the same as those in verses 7-8, for we understand 7-8 refer to creatures on EARTH (believing Israel). Verse 14 refers to creatures from HEAVEN–that would be angels (remember Matt 24:31?).

There would be no reason for us the Church the Body of Christ to return with Christ at His Second Coming. The Second Coming is God coming back for Israel, to rescue her from the antichrist and her other enemies. When we understand dispensational Bible study, we see that we have nothing to do with God’s dealings with Israel. We would have no reason to come to earth; we (the Body of Christ) are God’s heavenly people (Ephesians 1:3; Ephesians 2:6,7). As members of the Body of Christ, our glorified bodies that we will get at the rapture will be “eternal in the heavens” (2 Cor 5:1). If our bodies are going to be “eternal in the heavens,” then how could we be coming back to earth? We are God’s heavenly people. Our rightful place is heaven. Israel is God’s earthly people, which is why Israel will inherit the earthly kingdom.

      I hope that helps!

  2. Thank you Shawn. Your reply was helpful but still not conclusive for me due to how Paul describes the church in the following passage.

    Ephesians 5:30-32
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

It looks like I need to keep studying… and that is a good thing!

    1. Hello again Coreen. Perhaps this will clear things up more.

Neither in Ephesians 5:30-32, nor anywhere in the context, does Paul call us the “bride of Christ.” We are the BODY of Christ, not the BRIDE of Christ. These verses are simply explaining that just as a husband and wife are joined, so we are joined to the Lord: “We are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones” (verse 30). Just as a husband and wife are joined, and have become one, so we have been joined with Jesus Christ, and we are one with Him. Just as a husband and wife are “one flesh,” so we the Body of Christ are literally “one flesh” with Him (verses 31,32). Hopefully that clarifies. Yes, we ALL need to do more studying!

  3. Shawn, I appreciate you continuing this discussion and I understand what you are saying but I’m still not certain this topic is as cut and dry and here’s why. In Ephesians 5:30-32 Paul is explaining a mystery regarding the church which was previously unknown and he quotes Genesis 2:23-24 to help us understand this mystery.

    Genesis 2:23-24
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

God formed Adam’s bride Eve out of Adam’s body. “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” (Genesis 2:18) Likewise, God is fashioning a bride for Jesus, the second Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45), out of Jesus’ body.

Right from the beginning it was God’s plan that a bride be made for “the man” Jesus, out of His own body. The Jews believe it is only them and many in the church say it is only them but the “great mystery” that Paul is explaining is that this bride is both Jew and Gentile; those who accept and receive Him by faith and are made “one flesh” with Him.

Perhaps we may never fully understand this “great mystery” until we are in heaven…

    Lord Bless you my brother!
