“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth, comparing spiritual things with spiritual” (1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV).

As today’s Scripture demonstrates, the Spirit of God never operates apart from the Word of God.

For approximately three years, the Lord Jesus Christ ministered throughout the land of Israel. After the Jews had crucified Him, and after He resurrected, another prophecy needed fulfillment—His ascension to His Father’s right hand (Psalm 110:1). Once He ascended, His apostles and disciples were to continue His work on earth by leading all of unbelieving Israel to trust Him as Messiah. These Jewish believers were just ordinary people, weak and fallible. How could they execute the work that Jesus Christ had started?

The Lord Jesus promised: “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he [a Person, not a force!] may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” (John 14:16,17).

Jesus Christ asked His Father to send the Holy Spirit on this “little flock” of Jewish believers, thereby equipping them to carry on His ministry in His absence. The Holy Ghost—“the Spirit of truth”—would testify of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost would speak to unbelieving Israel via the believing Jews “bearing witness” (John 15:26,27). Christ explains: “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:… when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth… He shall glorify me” (John 16:7-14).

When the Holy Spirit was poured out on believing Israel in Acts chapter 2, they were then able to preach God’s Word as Jesus Christ had done earlier….

As today’s Scripture demonstrates, the Spirit of God never operates apart from the Word of God.

When God wants something done, He speaks it, and it happens. For instance, during the creation week, as described in Genesis chapters 1 and 2, we repeatedly read the phrase: “And God said… And God said… And God said…,” et cetera. The various systems of creation came into existence and became operational whenever the Lord Jesus Christ spoke: the heaven, the heavens, the earth, all life forms, and so on appeared whenever their Creator commanded them to be so. Furthermore, we read in Genesis 1:2: “…And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Although “God created all things by Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 3:9), the Holy Spirit was also present during the creation week, and He too was active in the creation of the universe.

Our Lord Jesus Christ told His Jewish disciples, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he [a Person, not a force!], the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come” (John 16:12,13). Christ is referring to the (future) day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2), when He will baptize Israel’s believing remnant with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4,5). The Holy Ghost will then speak words through them so unbelieving Jews can hear God’s Word, know what God is doing, and how to be saved from their sins. Later, the Holy Spirit will cause those men to write the New Testament Scriptures (the “all truth” and “things to come”).

The Holy Spirit does not operate haphazardly, nor does He work apart from God’s Word. Wherever the Holy Spirit is, the Word of God is present; wherever the Word of God is, the Holy Spirit is present….

As today’s Scripture demonstrates, the Spirit of God never operates apart from the Word of God.

The average Bible reader has many misconceptions about its characters, and the Holy Ghost is certainly one of these misunderstood persons. There are many absurd, superstitious beliefs about the Holy Spirit. Some view Him as a mystical, “spooky spirit.” Others think He is an inanimate, impersonal force. Even many who have trusted Jesus Christ as their Saviour, have a strange understanding of who the Holy Ghost is and how He operates. In the next few studies, we will examine some key passages about the Holy Spirit: who He is, what He does, how He does it, and so on.

Firstly, the Holy Spirit is a Person, not some force; specifically, the Holy Ghost is God. Acts 5:3,4 is very clear: “But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.” One cannot lie to a force, only to a person; lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God Himself!

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word [Jesus Christ], and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one” (1 John 5:7). The Holy Spirit is just as much God as the Father and the Son are!

Dozens of verses demonstrate that the Holy Spirit is a person. For instance, the Holy Spirit talks (1 Timothy 4:1), He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), and He lives within those individuals who have trusted Jesus Christ alone as their personal Saviour (2 Timothy 1:14). No “force” does any of those things!

“All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee” (Psalm 145:10 KJV).

Saints, bless the LORD!

Today’s Scripture is an excerpt from King David’s “psalm of praise.” The LORD had certainly been good to David: He had brought him countless military victories, He had appointed him as king over Israel, and He had guaranteed him that his royal bloodline would last forever (through Jesus Christ).

David certainly witnessed countless miraculous demonstrations of JEHOVAH. A poor, lowly shepherd boy from Bethlehem, turned out to be the most famous king of Israel, and one of the most well-known Bible characters—a miracle of the LORD in and of itself!

We members of the Church the Body of Christ can relate to David and the other ancient Jewish believers. We can join them in “blessing” (praising) the LORD. Just as God did wonderful things for them, He has done equally magnificent things for us. In fact, we are one of those magnificent works of the LORD!

Firstly, God Almighty has given us breath, for without it, we would not have physical life: “[He] neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things” (Acts 17:25). Secondly, when we trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour, God Almighty made us “new creatures in Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:17): He has also given us spiritual life! That life is to produce fruit: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

Dear saints, remember, praising our Lord does not merely involve our lips, but our lifestyles too! When we walk by faith in the sound Pauline doctrine found in God’s Word, we are worshipping Jesus Christ, for that doctrine is His life. The Holy Spirit uses that doctrine to manifest that life in and through us. Let us praise the Lord that He would even let us—His former enemies—participate in accomplishing His marvelous will. Let us bless the Lord, not only with our lips, but with our lives! 🙂

The Apostle Paul knew his…. Do you know yours?

While recently visiting the graves of family, friends, and neighbors, I knew the location of their physical bodies, but I wondered about the residence of some of those immortal souls. A few had testimonies of salvation in Jesus Christ, but the majority did not.

From an elevated vantage point, I beheld hundreds of graves. The words of the Lord echoed in my mind: “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:13,14). Most had died in their sins, and were eternally enduring the wrath of a holy God in hell, the same God who had offered His only begotten Son Jesus Christ so they could have an opportunity to avoid such a horrific abode!!

Dear readers, everlasting hellfire is real, and never forget it! Many churches and preachers avoid the topic of perpetual consciousness in eternal damnation, but it is true nonetheless. God originally prepared that hellfire to punish the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41); now, that awful place also exists for sinful mankind who follows Satan’s evil policy.

But, you do not have to go to hell! On Calvary’s cruel cross, Jesus Christ suffered God’s righteous wrath against our sin. Never will we be able to comprehend the physical and spiritual pain Jesus Christ suffered for us wretched sinners. Salvation from hell was not cheap! Trust the merits of Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork: He died for your sins, He was buried to put away those sins, and He was raised again the third day to give you His life when you trust Him alone as your personal Saviour. Once you trust Christ alone, you can say with Paul, “[when I will] be absent from the body, [I will] be present with the Lord!” 🙂

“Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?” (John 10:34 KJV).

What did Jesus Christ mean in today’s Scripture?

When Jesus claimed, “I and my Father are one” (verse 30), the Jews want to stone Him to death (verse 31).

“Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?” (John 10:32-36).

Our Lord Jesus Christ is forcing them to remember the contents of Psalm 82 by quoting one of its verses:

  • By quoting verse 6, “Ye are gods,” He is equating His audience in John chapter 10 with the evil and unbelieving rulers of Israel of centuries past. They are all antagonistic against God’s will (in Psalm 82, instead of ruling as God would, they rule Israel in wickedness; in John chapter 10, they reject God the Son and want to kill Him). Jesus’ audience knew they were wicked!
  • Psalm 82:7 said, “Ye are gods… but ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.” Jesus reminded His audience that their punishment was coming!
  • Also, Psalm 82:8—“Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations”—was in their minds. They were not accomplishing God’s will, so God (Jesus Christ) would have to perform His will without them (John 10:36-38). Jesus’ audience knew their God had arrived!

By quoting Psalm 82, Jesus reaffirmed His deity and confirmed their unbelief! The Jews understood what Jesus said: they were so irritated and convicted that they unsuccessfully re-attempted to physically seize Him (John 10:39). Behold the wisdom of our Lord Jesus Christ! 🙂

“Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?” (John 10:34 KJV).

What did Jesus Christ mean in today’s Scripture?

Jesus has just claimed to be equal with God, so the Jews desire to stone Him (verses 29-33). He justifies Himself by quoting Psalm 82:6, which is God speaking to human rulers: “Ye are gods” (today’s Scripture). Look at the larger context for understanding:

“Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?” (John 10:32-36).

As in Psalm 82, so in Christ’s day, Israel’s leaders and even the common Jews who claimed to be following JEHOVAH, were doing anything and everything but. They were wicked, despite their privileged position as God’s chosen earthly people.

Return to John chapter 10 now. Jesus Christ is basically saying that He can be rightly called “the Son of God,” and His working with God the Father verifies His claim (He healed the blind man in chapter 9). These Jews, however, merely claim to be of God—they do not do His will like God’s children do (John 1:12). Jesus Christ asks, “Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me and I in him” (John 10:36-38).

The (convicted) Jews understood Him… they tried to physically grab Jesus, but He escaped (verse 39)!

What did Jesus Christ mean in today’s Scripture?

The Jews want to stone Jesus Christ to death because He has claimed to be equal with God (verses 29,30,33). Jesus justifies Himself by quoting Psalm 82:6, which is God speaking to human rulers: “Ye are gods.” For me and other inquisitive Christians, this verse seemed odd. Firstly, why did God refer to mere men as “gods?” Secondly, what does Psalm 82:6 have to do with Jesus Christ’s situation in John chapter 10? Why did He even quote it?

Firstly, man is not equal to God, for the creature is inferior to his Creator. There is one God (1 Corinthians 8:4-6), and all of creation is nothing in His sight (Isaiah 40:12-31). Thus, obviously, Psalm 82:6 and John 10:34 are utilizing the word “gods” idiomatically. Here, the literal sense—that men are actually gods—is nonsense. It must be a “play on words.”

According to Psalm 82, God ordained Israel’s leaders to educate the nation in light of His Word, to rule His people with godliness and honesty. Israel was a theocracy—God ruled her through kings, prophets, priests, judges, et cetera. Nevertheless, Psalm 82 says these leaders are ungodly and cruel. They are not fulfilling God’s will, they are not executing proper judgment in Israel, and they are not ruling Israel as God would rule her: “God standeth among the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods. How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah [Rest/Pause]. Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted… I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes” (verses 1-7).

Thus, God will have to come and personally rule Israel and accomplish His will without those leaders: “Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations” (verse 8). This parallels the situation in John chapter 10. Israel’s leaders, and even the common Jews, are still wicked….

What did Jesus Christ mean in today’s Scripture?

In the context, He states, “My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one” (verses 29,30). Notice how Christ says His Father is “greater than all,” and then He equates Himself with His Father—“I and my Father are one.” Jesus is claiming to be equal to God the Father, and this infuriates the Jews. “Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him” (verse 31).

“Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God” (verses 32,33). Today’s Scripture says: “Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?”

For some time, these verses puzzled me. Why did Jesus quote Psalm 82:6 (“Ye are gods”)? How does this relate to the situation in John chapter 10? Why does the Bible call men “gods” here?

Firstly, read Psalm 82. Israel’s leaders, whom God ordained to lead the nation in His ways, are perverted and cruel. They were “gods” in the sense that God wanted to utilize their position of leadership to take care of His people, Israel. However, they preferred to abuse their authority. They are not fulfilling God’s will; they are not executing righteous judgment in Israel. But, how does this relate to today’s Scripture? Why did Jesus even mention this in relation to His situation in John chapter 10? We shall search the Scriptures for the answer….

A Papal Prophecy? #13

“And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time” (2 Thessalonians 2:6 KJV).

The recent resignation of Benedict XVI as pope is being greatly discussed within “Christian” circles in light of eschatology. Are we seeing Bible prophecy fulfilled today, or is this simply the (usual) failure to “rightly divide the word of truth?”

This is (deliberately) the thirteenth and final study of this devotional arc: the number 13 in Scripture symbolizes rebellion (Genesis 14:4), and the antichrist is the epitome of Satan’s evil policy aimed at rebelling against God.

In these past one-dozen studies, we have studied the Holy Scriptures to briefly introduce the antichrist. You should have a better understanding of who he is and what role he plays in God’s dealings with mankind, particularly with Israel.

We leave you with some final thoughts.

  • Scripture never provides any dates or time frames for God’s dealings with us in the Dispensation of Grace. Contrariwise, the Bible does provide time frames for Israel’s program: regarding prophecy, the seven-year Tribulation is the concluding “week” (seven-year period) of a larger 490-year (70-week) period of time God deals with the nation Israel (Daniel 9:24-27). This further proves we, the Church the Body of Christ, cannot and will not experience the seven-year Tribulation.
  • This world is certainly preparing for the antichrist via false teaching, ecumenism (once-antagonistic denominations uniting), religious pluralism (uniting world religions), and increased technology and mass communication. However, the scriptural record is silent about papal resignations: Benedict XVI’s resignation is not Bible prophecy. Nevertheless, it does expose the dire condition—the scandals, perplexity, and desperation—of professing Christianity.
  • The rapture will occur at any time, so we cannot and should not set dates. However, you need to be ready for it! Jesus Christ died for your sins, He was buried, and He was raised again the third day to give you His life when you trust Him alone as your personal Saviour. Trust Him alone today, and in due time, you will be raptured out with the rest of the Church the Body of Christ, before the awful seven-year Tribulation begins, and before the antichrist is revealed.
