“Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:…” (1 Corinthians 2:6 KJV).

What wisdom really matters—and what wisdom really does not?

As a trained scientist (geologist, Earth scientist), I can guarantee you the scientific method concentrates solely on the natural world (not the spiritual world). It is a process of first observing an event, then recording what information you have gathered, and finally hypothesizing (speculating how the incident operates). Through subsequent experiments, you increase learning by amassing more data or information, thereby allowing you to modify your hypothesis or reject it entirely and form a new explanation (which can be tested, then accepted or discarded). Of course, contrary to popular belief, this is not a foolproof, airtight, “beyond-all-suspicion” belief system. Scientists rely heavily on their brains, which are imperfect. Long-held views, accepted by most “experts,” might be disproven later and totally abandoned. Science textbooks are regularly updated to reflect this flux!

Do you remember the aforementioned scientist and educator who influenced me in my university days all those years ago? Unquestionably, he tried to understand an evil society and desperately sought to improve it, but human effort is insufficient to comprehend and overcome sin. Philosophy is simply man making full use of his limited intellectual capacity, endeavoring in his own strength to figure out his origin, life, and purpose. Such a quest has been likened unto a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that does not exist! It is truly a hopeless, fruitless search.

Paul the Apostle himself, addressing philosophers (“intellectuals”) in Athens, preached in Acts chapter 17: “[26] And [God] hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; [27] That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: [28] For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.” Think of a blind person stretching forth arms and fingers, groping for a wall, door, window—anything to indicate location or orientation.

Such is the wisdom of this world….

What wisdom really matters—and what wisdom really does not?

Back in my early university days (over 15 years ago now!), I was exposed to the scientific career of a famous educator. Our professor played an online video of this long-time researcher, and I was simply fascinated with his insight and experiments. Although not working in my discipline (he was biology-oriented whereas I was geology [Earth science]- oriented), he investigated phenomena I grew to find interesting as well. Even after graduating college, I watched a couple dozen of his online videos as he lectured about scientific principles in his field of study. Undoubtedly, he was an educated, brilliant man—in the eyes of the world, that is. He alluded to the Bible just once, albeit it was a misquote (a religious tradition he assumed was Scripture).

After all these years, I recently did an internet search to see if he was still living. Now over age 90, he was very much alive—long retired from professorship, but still giving lectures and active in his research. Less than a week later, I saw his name in a list of notable deaths. It was a bit startling to me, but, then again, he was quite advanced in age. When I located and read his obituary—some 1,300 words, or almost three pages—it went on and on about his childhood, education, career, and retirement. He attended and graduated from prestigious institutions of higher learning, spending decades as a distinguished professor at a private university. In addition to hosting a television series that would be used to train other “intellectuals,” he wrote hundreds of scholarly articles and a few textbooks on the subject. Moreover, he received numerous awards and led organizations of professionals in his field of study. He and his wife (also highly educated) traveled the world for speaking engagements. The obituary closed without a solitary reference to anything “religious” or “spiritual.” Like many, he was indeed filled the wisdom of men, but was he bursting with the wisdom of God? Obviously not.

Let us see how today’s Scripture is applicable today….

Love, Not Eloquence

“And I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved” (2 Corinthians 12:15 KJV).

A dear Christian brother, now enjoying Heaven, wrote long ago: “It is not the tongue that counts—it is the heart. There are many educated ministers today who can prepare and deliver eloquent sermons; but if the heart is not filled with the love of God, the message will be empty and vain.” We agree wholeheartedly!

Read Philippians 1:15-18. Some people serve in ministry out of goodwill and love—endeavoring to benefit others, seek their highest good, profit them, impart sound Bible doctrine unto them, offer them spiritual light and understanding. Others in ministry simply wish to attack, belittle, or pick fights. God’s love is not operating in them: their flesh underlies what they do and speak. They might even study the Bible, and sound like the Lord Jesus Christ’s servants, but they are spiteful and vindictive. Philosophy (man’s wisdom), not the love of the Holy Spirit, governs them. As today’s Scripture expresses, Paul was just the opposite.

Read the Apostle’s other words to Corinth: “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe” (1 Corinthians 1:17-21).

“And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:1,2). Above all, brethren, may we be gentle and loving (instead of “philosophical”) in ministry as we share the Message of Grace!

“Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1 KJV).

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). Our present universe is quite far from that original perfect system its Creator intended. Even if we knew no Bible verses whatsoever, we could easily see and conclude that something is just not quite right! With the passage of time from Genesis chapter 3 onward, scientific experiments corroborate how conditions are indeed worsening. Chaos, confusion, blindness, ignorance, darkness, disintegration, decay, decomposition, and death have become more widespread. Man has struggled for millennia to reverse this downward spiral—relying on his flawed intellect in an attempt to solve his endless problems—but he has failed so miserably. Yet, this exercise in futility does not deter him from trying and trying again using his long-time methods (the definition of “insanity!”).

Colossians chapter 1 expands upon Genesis 1:1: “[16] For by him [God’s dear Son, the Lord Jesus Christ—verse 13] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: [17] And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. [18] And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. [19] For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; [20] And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.”

Here is what lies at the heart of Father God’s plan to restore this fallen creation to Himself. Though sin currently runs rampant throughout the heaven and the earth, it is a temporary situation. His plan of reconciliation starts with “the blood of [Christ’s] cross” (verse 20). We must go back to Calvary, the worst tragedy of all time….

Just as Adam and Eve decided to “play the blame game” in Genesis chapter 3—“God made me this way!” and “The Devil made me do it!”—so sinners lash out against these two entities today. The blame actually falls upon Adam, as both Romans and 1 Corinthians affirm. “Wherefore, as by one man [Adam!] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12). “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:21,22); please note how this context is physical death (Adam) versus physical resurrection (Christ).

Someone is sure to cry out in objection, “But is it not ‘unfair’ for God to punish us because of Adam’s sin?!” We are much swifter in our reply: “Romans 5:12-21 teaches that, though we suffer because of Adam’s disobedience, there is a balance because God is equally ‘unfair’ in blessing us because of Christ’s obedience! He reckons what is true of Adam as naturally applicable to us, yet, when we believe on Christ’s finished crosswork as sufficient payment for our sins [Romans 5:1-11; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:3,4], He considers what is true of Christ as naturally true of us.”

If God really does seek our best interest, if He actually does care about His creation, then what are we to make of this fallen world? Will such conditions ever get better? When? What is taking so long for improvements? Though these seem like profound questions, they actually have ridiculously simple answers. Alas, people tend to “darken counsel by words without knowledge” (Job 38:2), relying on man’s “wisdom” to incessantly move their lips and mouths when they have no spiritual capacity whatsoever to comment on the things of God. They need to do far less talking and far more Bible study!!!

For creation’s problems to be solved, four parties must take their rightful places….

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26-28).

In the above Scripture, we read of the beginning of the human species—the creation of the first man and the first woman. He is not named until chapter 2 (Adam), and she is not given a name until chapter 3 (Eve). The LORD God instructed the man, who originally existed alone: “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:16,17).

With Lucifer (now known as “Satan,” Hebrew for “adversary”) working independently of his Creator, he moved to Earth to further his campaign that could be aptly styled “the policy of evil.” Read Genesis 3:1: “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” Such shrewdness or trickery, questioning the simple Word of God, was enough to ensure the human species would not fulfill the Creator’s will….

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

At its heart, sin is independence from God—thinking or doing something that is not part of His purpose and plan. He, the Creator, is thus not glorified; instead, the creature is worshipped and served (see Romans 1:25). This attitude and action originated with a spirit creature named Lucifer, whose narcissism is not dissimilar from man’s own love of self and preoccupation with autonomy. “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High” (Isaiah 14:12-14).

“Thou art the anointed cherub [a spirit in the angelic world] that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up [proud, arrogant] because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee” (Ezekiel 28:14-17).

When Adam, the first man, was created, he was foolish enough to join this angelic rebellion, initiating a human revolt against God on Earth….

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

Trying to be clever, desperately grabbing at superficial excuses so as not to believe the Bible or accept any “higher power,” critics of Christianity or religion in general produce various accusations. If God is omnipotent (all-powerful), can He not prevent tragedies? If He cannot stop them, then He is not great! If He can stop them but does not, then He is not good! These “intelligent” arguments are predicated upon the false assumption we mortal, puny, fallible creatures could sit in judgment of a Supreme Being (like “wise-in-their-own-eyes” children critiquing an adult!).

If He is God, could we ever hope to know all that He knows? If ever we knew as much as He does, then we ourselves would be God, right? Since we are not God, since we do not know everything there is to know, is it not plausible that His vindication is found amongst our unknown knowledge? Moreover, could our liability (we having wrongly charged Him with misconduct) be part of that unknown knowledge? To wit, in spite of tragedies, He could be both good and great (though we in our limitations have already foolishly passed unjust sentence on Him). After all, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8,9).

One conceited Bible mocker complained he did not believe in God because the universe tries to kill us 1,000 different ways—such as food and water shortages, diseases, ultraviolet radiation, and vicious and hungry wild animals. Amazingly, that whiner was still alive to grumble! Some intelligent mind had figured out a way to ensure his survival (an immune system, medication, weapons, Earth’s protective atmosphere, and so on)! In short, we have been equipped to live in the midst of threats, despite perils and tragedies… and that is quite a strong case for a benevolent, loving, personal, Creator God who seeks our welfare….

A Book That Will Teach

“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual” (1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV).

Today’s Scripture tells us who alone we can trust to teach us God’s truth!

Once, I heard a minister give his self-proclaimed “prophetic” message about top headlines that would appear in the coming year. While he reassured his audience that he received this information directly from “the Lord” (?), he gave a disclaimer: “I do not know, but at the end of this year, we will see if what I say came to pass.” Unlike the inner impressions and hunches of this “Christian” preacher, the Holy Bible is infallible, and we can trust its information completely.

Long, long ago, God Almighty wrote a Book, and He preserved it through history through a multiplicity of manuscript copies, so that it could eventually be translated into English, so we could read it even today! (Of course, Satan, the master counterfeiter that he is, most certainly had his own manuscripts—they still circulate today as corrupt Bible translations.) God promised to preserve His words forever (Psalm 12:6,7; Isaiah 30:8; Matthew 24:35; 1 Peter 1:25). Consequently, every person will stand before Him one day to give account as to what he or she did with that Bible. Did we reject it in favor of counterfeits? Did we re-translate it to fit our denominational beliefs? Did we apply it to life by faith? Did we even read it at all?

As English-speaking people, we understand—or, at least, we should understand—that we can trust the 400-year-old King James Bible. Sadly, even in many church circles, we are often cautioned not to trust God’s preserved Word. Unfortunately, footnotes, study notes, and seminarians usually attempt to claim that authority by offering “better” readings or “better” manuscripts. Beloved, we can do without unbelieving textual critics and their “scholarship.” God does not need lost people to explain His Word to His children; He never did and He never will (1 Corinthians 2:14). Never forget that!

The Holy Spirit will teach us the King James Bible if we “read” (Ephesians 3:4), “study” (2 Timothy 2:15), and “consider” it (2 Timothy 2:7)!

Redeem the Year!

“See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17 KJV).

What great advice for 2025!

Despite 2,000 years of Bible schools and seminaries, 2,000 years of a completed Bible canon, 2,000 years of Bible reading in churches, several decades of “Christian” television and radio, and a decade-plus of widespread use of “Christian” websites, how sad that Bible ignorance is still quite extensive (it is as if God never gave His Word to start with!).

Frankly, the Church the Body of Christ needs to wake up! The verse previous to today’s Scripture says, “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light” (verse 14). Paul, loosely quoting Isaiah 60:1, reminded us that the spiritual ignorance that gripped Israel in Isaiah’s day seized Christians in his day—and it still grips Christians 20 centuries later. Feel-good sermons, enjoyable “worship” services, and rites, rituals, and ceremonies will NOT solve this problem—they exacerbate it!

“[God] will have all men to be saved…” (1 Timothy 2:4a). Do you want this New Year to count for God’s glory? First, you need to get saved from sins and hell! You need to become a Christian by trusting in and relying on Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection as sufficient payment for your sins (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). That is only part of God’s will for you, for 1 Timothy 2:4b continues, “[God] will have all men… to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” Now, God’s will for your Christian life is daily, personal Bible study to renew your mind, so your faith in those verses can cause God to work in your life—it will be His life, thus making you “perfect [spiritually mature], throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16,17).

Today’s Scripture urges us to buy back the time Satan has robbed from God (time created for God’s glory). By faith, we need to make that time glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by applying His Word, particularly Paul’s epistles of Romans through Philemon, to our lives. Have a good year in Christ! 🙂
