Paul and The Pause of Prophecy #8

“Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him” (Acts 13:9 KJV).

How is the Apostle Paul connected to the pause of prophecy?

Doubtless, the religious fanatic leading the Jewish people to hate and reject the Son of God most vehemently, the man in Israel most opposed to Jesus Christ during early Acts, was Saul of Tarsus. Saul held the clothes of Stephen’s murderers (Acts 7:57-60; Acts 22:19,20)! He viciously persecuted the Messianic Church (cf. Acts 8:1-3; Acts 9:1-6,13,14; 1 Corinthians 15:9; Galatians 1:13,14,22,23; Philippians 3:6). Had Christ come back in prophecy, God’s wrath would have easily consumed him. Instead, Christ returned in Acts chapter 9 in mystery. The God of the Bible had kept a secret, and he revealed it only when He was ready. He would spare Saul of Tarsus, save his pitiful soul through Christ’s finished crosswork, and send him out as the Apostle Paul with this new Gospel of Grace.

First Timothy 1:12-16: “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”

Instead of wrath and war (as prophecy foretold), Christ came back in Acts chapter 9 to save His chief enemy in the Earth. Saul of Tarsus was delivered because of mystery truth. As per 1 Timothy, his salvation is a “pattern” of how God deals with sinners via “grace and peace.” This is the “longsuffering… salvation… wisdom given unto Paul” to which Peter referred in 2 Peter 3:9,15,16. God’s longsuffering that saved Paul is now being extended to all sinners, including apostate Israel mocking believing Israel in 2 Peter chapters 1 and 3….

Paul and The Pause of Prophecy #5

How is the Apostle Paul connected to the pause of prophecy?

Interestingly, the Holy Spirit through Paul addressed Elymas/Barjesus: “O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?” (Acts 13:10, the verse following today’s Scripture). This was definitely not immature or petty name-calling, but God’s reminder that national (apostate, unbelieving) Israel had Satan as their spiritual father (see Christ’s words to Israel’s religious leaders in John 8:44). Instead of serving in the LORD’S ministry, they labored tirelessly for the Devil! They had their self-righteousness, their watered-down version of God’s religion (Judaism), but they did not have God’s righteousness. Here is what led to Calvary (Christ’s rejection), and their persistent unbelief even into Acts.

Read Paul’s inspired commentary in Romans 9:30–10:4: “[9:30] What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. [9:31] But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. [9:32] Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; [9:33] As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. [10:1] Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. [10:2] For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. [10:3] For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. [10:4] For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.”

This satanic trap continued to ensnare lost Jews even during Paul’s ministry. Moreover, although God’s wrath should have fallen on Israel, it was Paul’s very ministry and message holding that judgment in abeyance. God’s mercy and grace of mystery have paused the wrath and war of prophecy….

333 Turns 13!

“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:17 KJV).

Dear saints and readers, “333 Words of Grace” celebrates its 13th birthday today!

Through the years, many questions have been (hopefully) answered. Perhaps a few doubts and misconceptions have been dispelled. Maybe a couple of new friends have been made. The Church the Body of Christ might have grown in size and maturity. Doubtless, faith has been given a firm foundation in sound Bible doctrine, the Word of God’s Grace. In a world of ever-increasing uncertainty and instability, is it not comforting to actually know what is going on and how to fix it? Education, religion, drugs, alcohol, activism, political elections, philosophy, and theology are man’s futile attempts to correct problems he was able to cause but is utterly powerless to reverse.

Christianity is not we using sinful flesh to “do right” or “do better.” The flesh always wants to do something, be something, and live something. However, we are not perfect, so we cannot do something. We are doomed in Adam, so we cannot be something. We are dead in our trespasses and sins, so we cannot live something. It will be an extremely happy day for us when we swallow our religious pride and place our faith solely in Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork as sufficient payment for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). Not only is this Gospel of Grace the key to being saved (delivered) from Hell, but also from sin’s dominion every day.

Over the course of these last 156 months, we have studied the Authorized Version King James Bible rightly divided as per 2 Timothy 2:15. No, we do not know everything, but we know more than we did yesterday—and, certainly, more than we did 13 years ago! God’s words and will have become a little clearer, now that we have become a tad wiser (today’s Scripture). We are growing in grace, are we not? Some of us have graduated to Heaven, having left Earth. Others have moved off into apostasy, departing from the truth. Still, we are here to rejoice in our Lord Jesus Christ as touching this ministry milestone and reflect on all these years of daily grace Bible studies. We are truly thankful, and, by God’s grace, we move onward!

Spiritual Calligraphy #12

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read this excerpt from the Sermon on the Mount, Christ’s Kingdom Constitution of Matthew chapters 5–7. It is Israel’s prospect in the ages to come, and complements today’s Scripture: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). Also, Matthew 13:43: “Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Our parallel passage as members of the Church the Body of Christ is Philippians 2:13-16, what we read earlier.

Whether the nation Israel living in accordance with the Law of Moses (time past), or we the Church the Body of Christ conducting ourselves in agreement with the Pauline epistles of Romans through Philemon (but now), or the redeemed nation Israel functioning under the New Covenant or Law of Messiah (ages to come), it is the life of the one true (Creator) God being revealed in and through His people. He is thus glorified in His creation. Yet, if they do not walk in their respective identities, they will give an occasion for Satan’s people to sneer, laugh, and discredit them.

Indeed, it can be spiritual calligraphy—God the Holy Spirit’s attractive handwriting on the pages of Scripture being brought into the very details of human existence. Or, it can be spiritual cacography—hideous words and repulsive deeds that are not even worth mentioning or thinking about. To state it another way, either it will be a “sinner’s gospel” or a “scoffer’s creed.” We would do well to remember grace living as taught in Romans 6:1-14, Ephesians 5:1-20, Colossians 1:9-13, and Titus 2:11-15. It is our choice to allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, so any poor decisions we make will not be God’s fault. May we choose spiritual calligraphy! 🙂

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read Titus chapter 2: “[1] But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: [2] That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. [3] The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; [4] That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, [5] To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

“[6] Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. [7] In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, [8] Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. [9] Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; [10] Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

“[11] For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, [12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; [13] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; [14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. [15] These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.”

Paul wrote how members of the Body of Christ (especially young women) should carefully guard how they live, lest unbelievers “blaspheme [speak against] the word of God” (verse 5). Similarly, servants (employees) should “adorn [decorate, make attractive/appealing] the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (verse 10). Such precautions prevent hypocrisy (thereby avoiding ancient Israel’s sins of Romans 2:21-24).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read Deuteronomy 4:5-8, Moses’ speech to Israel: “Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?”

God intended Israel to display His wisdom for all the Gentiles to see and admire. This was especially important since we will remember these Gentiles or nations were walking in the foolishness of satanic darkness and spiritual ignorance (Genesis 11:1-9; Acts 14:15-17; Acts 17:16-31; Acts 26:17,18; Romans 1:20-32; Ephesians 2:1-3,11,12; Ephesians 4:17-19). The nation Israel, however, did not value and esteem their Hebrew Bible (our Old Testament): they joined the Gentiles in their darkness!

Notice how, some 600 years before Christ, the LORD God spoke these words through Jeremiah the Prophet: “For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish [stupid!] children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge” (Jeremiah 4:22). Also consider Jeremiah 5:21,23: “Hear now this, O foolish [same Hebrew word translated ‘sottish’] people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:…. But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.”

While true of the ancient nation Israel, the Holy Spirit could also compose these Jeremiah verses to and about the professing church and even the genuine church. Spiritual folly and stupidity reign supreme in the majority of our “Christian” schools, local “Christian” assemblies, and “Christian” homes….

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Here is God’s grace expressed in and through members of the Church the Body of Christ: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain” (Philippians 2:13-16).

“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid [May God never let that happen!]” (Romans 6:11-15).

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory” (Colossians 3:1-4). “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness” (Ephesians 4:17-19).

Two Sons and Two Fathers

“And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:” (Luke 23:18 KJV).

One son will be liberated to live, and the other Son will be sentenced to die!

At the time of Christ’s trial, Barabbas is a prisoner (Matthew 27:16). Barabbas is a murderer, a robber, and guilty of “insurrection,” or rebelling against the government (Mark 15:7; Luke 23:18,19; John 18:40).

It is Passover. Roman governor Pontius Pilate has a custom that, at the feast, he releases a prisoner, whomever the people desire (Matthew 27:15; Mark 15:6). “But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified” (Matthew 27:20-22).

Israel’s chief priests, rulers, and common people all demand Christ’s crucifixion and Barabbas’ release, so Pilate gives the sentence (Luke 23:23-25). Guilty Barabbas is set free to live, and innocent Jesus Christ is condemned to be crucified. While Barabbas’ involvement in the matter seems insignificant upon first glance, God included it in His written Word because to provide us with an amazing illustration!

“Barabbas” means “son of the father.” Barabbas is a criminal, and he represents sinful, rebellious mankind who is worthy of death. He is bound by sin, and faces eternal death. Spiritually, sinful mankind is the son of Satan—man is of his father the devil (John 8:44). Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, God, “knew no sin” (2 Corinthians 5:21), but took upon Himself our sins and was punished in our place.

Innocent Jesus Christ took the place of guilty Barabbas, which actually represented Christ taking the place of the whole world, suffering God’s wrath on our behalf! “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust…” (1 Peter 3:18). Thus, through Christ’s finished crosswork, we sinful sons of Adam (and Satan) can be freed from sin, and we can become the righteous sons of God.

Christ Liveth in Me

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20 KJV).

“He is risen” is not a simple blasé cliché!

When Jesus’ disciples came to His tomb on that glorious Sunday morning nearly 2,000 years ago, they were startled to find it empty! Angels inform them that He has resurrected, but they are still in shock (Matthew 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-8). Jesus Christ Himself must later explain the Scriptures to them regarding what happened those last few days (Luke 24:44-46).

However, until Paul’s ministry, Christ’s finished crosswork is not preached as good news for salvation. Peter and Israel’s other apostles simply preach that Jesus Christ is now resurrected to “sit on [David’s] throne” (Acts 2:30)—that is bad news for much of Israel, for they still reject Him, weeks and months after His resurrection and ascension. Throughout early Acts, Israel’s apostles warn her that Jesus Christ is coming back to judge them.

When we come to the Apostle Paul’s ministry, we learn that we Gentiles can benefit from Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork. Israel’s rejected Messiah is now our way to heaven! Yes, Israel hated Him, and demanded that He experience the most awful method of execution devised, but God allowed it in order to accomplish His will. Satan attempted to hinder God’s will by having Christ killed, but all that did was provide the method whereby God could save us pagan Gentiles. Calvary’s finished crosswork frees us from Satan’s evil system and gives us a chance to be God’s people (Acts 26:17,18)!

As people who have trusted Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection as sufficient payment for our sins, that crucifixion is our death to self and sin, and that resurrection is our raising to walk in newness of life—His life (today’s Scripture; cf. Romans 6:1-11)!

Indeed, Jesus Christ is alive, and He lives in and through those who walk by faith in God’s Word to them, Paul’s epistles of Romans through Philemon! 🙂

No Corrupt Communication #4

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29 KJV).

What is this “corrupt communication?”

Following three chapters of doctrine and wealth (Ephesians chapters 1–3), the Apostle Paul goes on to issue three chapters on duty and walk (Ephesians chapters 4–6). It is in the “walk” or “duty” section of Ephesians—victorious, Christian, grace-oriented, daily living—that we come across today’s Scripture.

As opposed to allowing “corrupt communication” to leave our mouth, we ought to speak “good” words that will lead to “edifying,” which will result in grace being ministered to our listeners. Today’s Scripture reads quite similarly to Colossians 4:6: “Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” If we could have a simple definition of grace, it would afford us comprehension as to just what is the corrupt communication referenced in today’s Scripture.

Oftentimes, grace has been described as “God’s unmerited favor.” Yet, we can say more here. Grace can be thought of as this: “all that God can do for us, everything that He is free to do for us, through the Lord Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork on Calvary.” If our speech conforms to this definition or principle, we will thereby avoid “corrupt communication.”

Go back to today’s Scripture: “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Grace-oriented speech will edify, for it “ministers” (serves, like a waiter) grace to the audience. Now, think of “edifying.” The root is “edify,” which forms the basis for “edifice” (a building or structure). If grace-oriented speech edifies or builds up, then, it stands to reason, corrupt communication destroys or tears down. After all, remember “corrupt” in Greek here is “sapros,” as in rotten or decayed, with the decomposition spreading to whatever is affected.

What we need to speak are wholesome words, those which are healthy (able to impart spiritual life or spiritual health), so our hearers can partake of spiritual life and spiritual health….
