Have you ever stopped to consider why Jesus’ earthly trade was carpentry?

God’s purpose in creation (cf. today’s Scripture) was not simply a physical heaven and a physical earth. What He was also doing was using His spoken word to form a spiritual structure, an edifice of sound doctrine. Daily He taught Adam about what He was doing and Adam’s purpose in that plan. Then, Adam willfully abandoned that doctrine and fell into sin. God created the nation Israel to do what Adam failed to do—reign over Earth for His glory. God gave Israel His Law through Moses, but, alas, Israel willfully abandoned it in favor of sin.

Why did Jesus come to Earth? He said, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24). He was “sent” to Israel, yea, He was Israel’s “Apostle” (today’s Scripture). Jesus Christ came to guide lost Israel back to Father God. She had so strayed from the path of righteousness and had become trapped in the mire of self-righteousness. God’s Son came to live a sinless life in her midst, to be the embodiment of the Law system she never even closely resembled. As JESUS, JEHOVAH-SAVIOUR, He came “to save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

What Adam had miserably failed to do, what Israel had miserably failed to do, Jesus succeeded in doing. As the perfect Man, He had so filled His heart with Father God’s Word! Now, He could teach Israel that word and thus lead her back to God! The edifice of sound doctrine Jesus Christ had built in Himself, He could now work with His Father God, building that structure of sound doctrine in the hearts of His wayward people, Israel.

Young Jesus “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52). Passing from childhood to adulthood, Jesus (as the God-Man) became more aware of His purpose. His physical body grew stronger, His mental faculties strengthened, and His soul became increasingly enlightened as He feasted on His Heavenly Father’s Word (the “Old Testament” Scriptures). “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8; cf. Hebrews 10:5-7).

One day, Jesus as a Man read or heard the scroll of Daniel chapter 9. He learned of verse 26 about Messiah being “cut off” (killed) 483 years after Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall. From that day forward, Jesus knew the age at which He would die. He knew the time of year He would die—Passover. Those three years of ministry would pass quickly, and He had to be about His Father’s business. There was no time to waste!

“My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34). “Jesus said…. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of the Father, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel” (John 5:19,20). “…But as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things” (John 8:28).

Yes, by the time of His earthly ministry, Jesus Christ was fully prepared to work with His Heavenly Father in the “family business” of “carpentry.”

Reading from Isaiah chapter 50: “[4] The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. [5] The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.”

After accidentally leaving 12-year-old Jesus, Joseph and Mary return to Jerusalem and find Him at the Temple, “sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers” (Luke 2:46,47) Verses 48 and 49: “And when [Joseph and Mary] saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

At age 12, the Lord Jesus was very knowledgeable in Jewish religion, for He had studied the “Old Testament” scrolls by faith. He knew exactly what His Heavenly Father was doing. Did those senior-citizen rabbis? We can only wonder what kinds of questions He was asking those elderly “learned” (?) Jewish doctors of theology! (Sort of like today, when 10-year-old children can quote a clear Gospel of Grace while most “veteran” preachers cannot.) If at age 12 Jesus was so skilled in the word of righteousness, just imagine the spiritual GIANT He was at age 30 when He began His ministry!!

The Lord Jesus had a reputation among the people of Israel for being “the carpenter’s son” (Matthew 13:55) and “the carpenter” (Mark 6:3). They knew He had grown up under the tutelage of Joseph (“as was supposed” His father; Luke 3:23). Joseph was a carpenter, a very creative man, and had instructed Jesus well concerning the craft.

By the way, what happened to Joseph is not recorded in Scripture. There is Scriptural evidence that he was deceased before Christ’s crucifixion (see John 19:27). Joseph may in fact have died before Christ even began His earthly ministry, perhaps during Jesus’ latter teenage years?

What we can be sure of is that Joseph and Jesus had worked on many carpentry projects. They had designed many edifices together. They had raised many structures together. Together, they had made many houses for people. As a Man, the Lord Jesus had learned quite a bit about wood. Wood was the primary material than His stepfather used to accomplish his goals. As a Man, the Lord Jesus also studied the “Old Testament” Scriptures to learn quite a bit about another a wooden structure. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52).

As the years passed, it became clearer and clearer what His Heavenly Father was doing. Like His stepfather Joseph, Jesus’ Heavenly Father was building something. As He had so obediently helped His stepfather, the Lord Jesus was now entering the public ministry, ready to raise the structure His Heavenly Father had planned from eternity past….

Very little is known about Jesus’ childhood. While various purely speculative and quite silly ideas have been offered, these do not concern us. The only authoritative sources on the subject are found in the Bible—Matthew chapter 2 and Luke chapter 2.

Recall the famous account when Joseph and Mary accidentally left Jesus, age 12, in Jerusalem, before returning for Him. Luke 2:51,52 continue: “And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” These two verses cover about 18 years, for we do not read about Jesus again until He enters His public ministry around age 30 (Luke 3:23).

What did Jesus do during those years prior to His ministry? It is quite simple to understand when we look at the verses. He followed His legal father, Joseph, in the family trade. Joseph taught young Jesus all about carpentry and architecture. Picture this, will you? The God of creation in mortal flesh submitting Himself to be instructed by a human stepfather! One way that Jesus “increased in wisdom” concerned carpentry. Another way was that He studied His “Old Testament” scrolls.

The Lord Jesus was being trained twice simultaneously. Joseph was teaching Him manual and human labor while Father God was teaching Him spiritual and divine labor! Young Jesus helped His stepfather Joseph accomplish many projects, a glimpse of what He would do one day with His Heavenly Father upon entering His public ministry!

When Israel heard Jesus teaching mighty doctrines in the synagogue where He grew up, they were amazed. The Bible says in Mark 6:1-3: “[1] And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. [2] And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? [3] Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.” Matthew’s (13:55) account says, “Is not this the carpenter’s son?”

Two quick facts—Jesus was “the carpenter” and was “the carpenter’s son.” It is no coincidence that Father God chose a carpenter, Joseph, as His Son’s foster-father. God could have had His Son raised in the home of a physician, religious leader, politician, businessman, or fisherman. Yet, Father God made sure that His Son was born into a family where carpentry was the trade. Why?

In the Bible, much older Joseph and young Jesus were carpenters. They were not just known for building pieces of furniture or other wooden crafts (a common misconception). No, carpenters were known for constructing whole houses. They were physically strong men, and knowledgeable in architecture. Why was Jesus Christ a carpenter? Think about today’s Scripture and it will become wonderfully clear! 🙂

The Rainbow

“I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth…. And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh” (Genesis 9:13,15 KJV).

Why does the rainbow exist?

A dear Christian brother recently asked me if I had heard about the rainbow that appeared in the sky last week, the day before 9/11, in New York City. He proceeded, “Maybe God was trying to tell us something.” I silently waited as he explained, “Like the White House was bathed in colored lights in celebration of the legalization of homosexual unions, God had His own rainbow over the World Trade Center site to show us what He thought!” (My reaction was polite, but swift, once he finished, “God is telling us nothing!” Remember, “God” was a day early, and He had many other rainbows visible around the world on that day—what of those rainbows?!)

Dear friends, if you believe that you must look into the sky to hear from God, please throw away your Bibles. No, honestly. If you hold to continuing revelation from God, you agree with the cults! Whether looking for God’s Word to be communicated via angels, blood-red moons, rainbows over memorial sites, dreams, et cetera, you are well on your way to expanding the Bible’s canon of 66 books to include your very own pseudepigrapha (false writings, apocryphal books). If you need coffins, high unemployment rates, astronomical phenomena, hospital bills, and angelic visitations to hear a word from God, friend, religion has so robbed—yes, robbed—you of the true words of God.

The Bible says—notice this is not a hunch or an opinion—the rainbow is God’s promise that He will never flood the whole world again as He did in Noah’s day. If we are Bible believers, we should believe what the Bible says about the rainbow, rather than speculating. God has already spoken about where He stands with respect to homosexuals (Romans 1:27; 1 Timothy 1:10,11), so let us get our noses in His Book instead of having our eyes in the skies!

The Truth of the Gospel

“But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified” (Galatians 2:14-16 KJV).

What is “the truth of the gospel?”

The Gospel of the Grace of God is how God’s grace is manifested to us through Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork. “Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). “Being justified [declared righteous by God] freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God” (Romans 3:24,25).

“The truth of the gospel” (today’s Scripture) is that we are saved today by simple faith in Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary alone. Works are not the issue (water baptism, dietary laws, confession, commandment-keeping, and so on). Had our works been enough to give us a right standing before God, Jesus could have stayed in heaven!

Peter’s error in today’s Scripture was that he encouraged Law-keeping among Paul’s Gentile converts. Paul’s converts were under no such legalistic commands. Neither are we. “Ye are not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14b). Paul rightly rebuked Peter. In our Dispensation of Grace, God has abolished Israel’s system of works, and ushered in the system of grace. Paul would sadly rebuke many Christians today, those who incessantly mix law and grace. His words to Peter would echo throughout Christendom, “Ye walk not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel!”

Closed Minds, Closed Hearts, Closed Book

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV).

“Why do more people not see dispensational Bible study?” Today’s Scripture explains.

A few years ago, a Christian friend invited me to her house to give a Bible study for her friend stuck in a “Christian” cult. Others attended as well. It turned out to be almost three hours of teaching! (Search YouTube for three videos titled, “Intro to Pauline Dispensationalism.”) The woman was without excuse after hearing that clear Gospel of Grace and clear outline of the Bible dispensationally considered.

Sometime later, she told my friend, “I felt so sorry for you all. You are all so deceived.” (Strangely, she never told me that, never corrected anything I said, and never “blessed” the group with any of her “spiritual insight.” In fact, strangest of all, throughout the study, she smiled, cheerfully listening to the verses, and even declared, “I know JEHOVAH God is working here!” Despite her “compliments,” we have not seen her since!)

More recently, I had an online discussion with a Bible critic, atheist, and evolutionist. Several others soon joined in. Once I contrasted their “idle speculation and ever-changing hypotheses” with “the Bible’s clear testimony,” one individual grew ballistic: “The Bible’s plain and clear testimony?!” Even with a saint of the Most High God expounding the Bible for him, he still could not understand it. Why? The Spirit of God was there (with me), but the man did not “receive” the things of the Spirit of God. He was not willing to see. He was no different from the cult member mentioned earlier.

Lost people lack God’s indwelling Holy Spirit. They have no capacity to understand God’s Word. It is foolishness to them. What about genuine Holy-Spirit-indwelt Christians trapped in denominations? They too are guided by the flesh (church tradition perpetuated by lost people), hindering the Holy Spirit from working in them (1 Thessalonians 5:19). However, as Jesus Himself said, whenever they are willing to hear and see, “[they] shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself” (John 7:17).

Where True Love is Found

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10 KJV).

Behold where true love is found!

Many people today seek “love” in all the wrong places—“pimping,” prostitution, homosexual unions, pedophilia, bestiality, necrophilia, and all sorts of other illicit acts. Even concerning “straight” couples (involving two humans), there is usually a very shallow understanding of what true love is. There is a lot of “take, take, take” from one or both sides, and a lot of “me, me, me” on one or both sides. There is very little, if any, altruism (“give, give, give”). Both people really seeking the other person’s best interest—the rarest of all!

Beloved, let us never, ever, ever place another human on a level he or she will never attain. We are all sinners. Mistakes will happen. Other people will disappoint us, as individuals have done before. Break-ups happen, divorces happen, infidelity happens, betrayal happens. Even though both sides try their very hardest, there is still heartache and heartbreak. (Then, there is one or both parties doing nothing to make the situation better, leading to the same dismal end.)

All the unlovely people we have met in our life, the horrible individuals who treated us as though we were utter scum, we need not be bitter against them. We need to pray for them. They have not got a clue what real love is, and were thus unable to show it to us. We should take a moment to remember today’s Scripture. If no one else loves us, if everyone else betrays us, if everyone else disappoints us, if everyone else abandons us, there is still Father God and His free gift offered to us. His only begotten Son shed His rich, royal blood, that He may pay our sin debt. He had nothing left to give! Jesus Christ was Father God’s most precious relationship, and He (yea, They) gave it up, that we sinners might enjoy that perfect relationship forever!

In no other Person but Jesus Christ will we find true love. Let us not search for it elsewhere. Such a search is a waste of time… and of true love.
