The Spiritual Dexterity of Our Physical Posterity #3

“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word” (Psalm 119:9 KJV).

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

Mark it well! No amount of education, no amount of money, no amount of social connections, no amount of business success, no amount of trophies and awards, no amount of romance, no amount of religion, no amount of self-effort and self-esteem, no amount of entertainment, no amount of legislation, no amount of scheming, no amount of pacifism or war, no amount of philosophy, no amount of activism, no amount of denial or skepticism, no amount of soul-searching, no amount of experiments or scientific research, and no amount of promises can solve the greatest dilemma of our species—the sin problem. Look around at our world. We are naturally flawed. If human history has proved one fact, the deliverance we need cannot and will not be found in ourselves or anyone like us! The sooner we learn this, the better off we will truly be. In fact, the Bible confirms what we already know by experience, but we are most reluctant (and too stubborn) to admit it.

The problem does not lie with or in the Holy Bible; it lies within us. Behold! The Bible’s solution to sin is what is known in Acts 20:24 as “the Gospel [Good News, Glad Tidings] of the Grace of God.” Here is that Gospel message: “Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). Only a few weeks prior to my seventh birthday, I was most fortunate in life to see how I needed to trust the Lord Jesus Christ alone as my personal Saviour. Almost 31 years later, I have come to see He is still the only answer to our sin problem. Dear reader, I would strongly encourage you with, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Friend, perhaps you have already noticed that people disappoint you. Why should you expect this? Remember, you disappoint yourself, and they are just as human as you are! Therefore, you ought never trust yourself and you should never trust people. You should, however, trust Jesus Christ in Christians, for He alone will never let you down….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

Let me start by furnishing you with a little about my background. Having parents of primarily French-Canadian and Irish ancestry, I was born and raised in a Bible-believing household in southwestern Louisiana (“Cajun Country”). Enrolled in public elementary and high schools from the early ’90s to the mid-2000s, and pursuing higher education (public university training in science) for another nine years (bachelor’s and master’s degrees), and finally completing a three-year pastoral program in seven months (excluding instruction under innumerable other men in ministry), I have been exposed to a wide range of viewpoints both bad and good. I am still learning, and there is still much more I can and need to learn, but I have reached a place where I can offer some advice that I have gathered over the last 20 years.

That being said, dear reader, the first and foremost issue to settle is preparing for eternity, for it might come (awfully) sooner than you think. In the two decades since our high school graduation, we have lost at least three classmates. One (age 20) took his own life in a domestic dispute just a few years after high school, another (age 28) died in a truck accident a couple of months before our 10th-year reunion, and a car crash took the life of a third one (age 38) last year. Just the other day, one of my niece’s childhood friends, only 18, perished in an automobile collision; cancer claimed the life of the girl’s older sister, at age 15, many years before. At my nephew’s graduation yesterday, a vacant chair represented a young man who also never reached his 16th birthday. These are six examples of lives tragically cut short! You might think you will die as a senior citizen, but this is not necessarily true. Earthly life can end before you know it.

Despite all our planning, contingencies will arise that offer us alternate paths. It is not always clear where to go or what to do, but having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the primary matter to settle….

If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?

Wow! It is simply unbelievable how 20 years have passed since my high school graduation. Recently, a classmate commented to me that we were “getting old.” Yes, it is true: we have almost begun middle age. In fact, at this point, even our own children are starting to graduate high school! Coincidentally, my nephew’s graduation is scheduled to take place in just a few hours. I will also witness several other kids graduate, many of whom I have seen grow up over the years. How exciting that one chapter of their life is closing so another one can open!

Approaching this anniversary, the following thought entered my mind. If I could speak to myself of 20 years ago, what would I say? What advice would I propose to that young man in the final days of the high school period of his life? Two decades of experience in the world are definitely useful in talking to him now. It would be the same information that I will share with any students and young adults who are currently reading these lines. That young man is long gone, vanished forever, but there are still individuals of youth who can benefit from that instruction if they have an eye to see, an ear to hear, and a heart to believe.

Look at today’s Scripture, especially the question it poses: “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” How can a young man or a young woman have the means to “cleanse his [or her] way?” What will enable this young person to have a pure, upright, decent, or morally uncontaminated “way” (road/path, course in life, manner of living)? Myriads of writers, lecturers, counselors, and celebrities have offered their insight. Some have given profitable information, but, permit our frankness, others need to mature a few more decades before attempting to guide anyone in life!

Maybe I have reached a point where I am worth listening to….

Mother: A Virtuous Woman

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10 KJV).

Today is Mother’s Day, so we dedicate this devotional to godly women (specifically mothers). I especially dedicate this to the virtuous woman who has been in my life for almost 38 years… my mom!

Today’s Scripture is the first verse of the Bible’s “Virtuous Woman” passage (Proverbs 31:10-31). King Solomon explained that the virtuous woman:

  • has a husband who safely trusts in her (verses 11,12).
  • is not lazy, but is strong because she works to feed and clothe her family and herself (verses 13-19,21,22,24,25,27).
  • pities the poor and needy (verse 20).
  • has a husband who is well-known because of her godly lifestyle (verse 23).
  • opens her mouth with wisdom, and speaks kindly and lovingly (verse 26).
  • has children and a husband who praise her (verse 28).
  • excels in what she does (verse 29).
  • has works that praise her (verse 31).

Verse 30 explains the virtuous woman is “a woman that feareth the LORD.”

The Apostle Paul wrote that godly women should: not slander/gossip, not be controlled by alcohol and emotions (sober minded), be teachers of good things, love their husbands and children, be cautious and modest, maintain the home, be “good,” and should obey (respect) their husbands… “that the word of God be not blasphemed” (Titus 2:3-5). A Christian woman, especially a mother, should be a virtuous woman in beliefs as well as in deed. She needs to set an example for her children (especially her daughters).

A Christian woman and/or Christian mother places her faith in this sound Bible doctrine, the indwelling Holy Spirit will then take that doctrine and transform her for God’s glory (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Her mind will be renewed by sound Bible doctrine, and that will transform her outward activity (Romans 12:1,2).

Are you a Christian woman or Christian mother who desires to be the woman God intends you to be in Christ Jesus? Place your faith in this sound Bible doctrine, and God will take care of the rest!

Christ Liveth in Me

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20 KJV).

“He is risen” is not a simple blasé cliché!

When Jesus’ disciples came to His tomb on that glorious Sunday morning nearly 2,000 years ago, they were startled to find it empty! Angels inform them that He has resurrected, but they are still in shock (Matthew 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-8). Jesus Christ Himself must later explain the Scriptures to them regarding what happened those last few days (Luke 24:44-46).

However, until Paul’s ministry, Christ’s finished crosswork is not preached as good news for salvation. Peter and Israel’s other apostles simply preach that Jesus Christ is now resurrected to “sit on [David’s] throne” (Acts 2:30)—that is bad news for much of Israel, for they still reject Him, weeks and months after His resurrection and ascension. Throughout early Acts, Israel’s apostles warn her that Jesus Christ is coming back to judge them.

When we come to the Apostle Paul’s ministry, we learn that we Gentiles can benefit from Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork. Israel’s rejected Messiah is now our way to heaven! Yes, Israel hated Him, and demanded that He experience the most awful method of execution devised, but God allowed it in order to accomplish His will. Satan attempted to hinder God’s will by having Christ killed, but all that did was provide the method whereby God could save us pagan Gentiles. Calvary’s finished crosswork frees us from Satan’s evil system and gives us a chance to be God’s people (Acts 26:17,18)!

As people who have trusted Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection as sufficient payment for our sins, that crucifixion is our death to self and sin, and that resurrection is our raising to walk in newness of life—His life (today’s Scripture; cf. Romans 6:1-11)!

Indeed, Jesus Christ is alive, and He lives in and through those who walk by faith in God’s Word to them, Paul’s epistles of Romans through Philemon! 🙂

Zealously Affected #23

“They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them. But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you” (Galatians 4:17,18 KJV).

Let us see if we can identify and comprehend the dangers of relying on emotions….

Recall the conundrum of the Galatian Christians. In today’s Scripture, they were “zealously affected, but not well.” To wit, their Law-based false teachers affected them so they became fervently supportive of man’s religious performance (discarding God’s all-sufficient work/Grace). Emotionally manipulated, they were no longer “zealously affected in a good thing;” that is, they had been brainwashed to reject God’s grace which they had originally received from Paul heartily! In short, they were “flip-floppers,” suddenly changing their opinion to match their situation which had also changed. By “warming up” to their false teachers, the Galatians then “cooled down” in their affection for Paul, thereby being excluded from the Lord’s spokesman to them. Once their Apostle wrote to call this to their attention, he foresaw how they would react to him most bitterly, regarding their friend and brother in Christ as their enemy (cf. Galatians 4:16). What an ABSOLUTE mess!

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). Worshipping God goes beyond mere experiencing “good feelings” and involves more than simply “getting in touch with the spirit world.” Our praise of Him must align with “truth,” and truth is not found by searching our hearts or admiring ourselves. Truth is pinpointed in the words of God “rightly divided” (2 Timothy 2:15), what the Holy Spirit says to and about us in Paul’s epistles of Romans to Philemon. We study the Bible from cover to cover, as it is all God-breathed or spoken by the Holy Ghost. Still, we make sure we understand that the Pauline Books define what the God of creation is doing at the moment. Regardless of how we “feel” about this or that, no matter what we “feel” about “him” or “her” (fellow people), here is the objective standard by which we (should!) determine the veracity or falsity of our experience.

This is the only way to survive our spiritually “perilous” world….

Let us see if we can identify and comprehend the dangers of relying on emotions….

“No one knows everything, no one is perfect, so I cannot possibly fault my ‘favorite’ Bible teacher for promoting lies.” “Yes, our pastor teaches false doctrine, but we cannot bear to send him away from our assembly.” No matter what we “feel,” the objective Holy Scriptures stand. May we obey them by faith.

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple” (Romans 16:17,18). “I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat” (1 Corinthians 5:9-11).

“If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself” (1 Timothy 6:3-5). “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

Zeal for the Lord indeed transcends all human relations….

Zealously Affected #21

Let us see if we can identify and comprehend the dangers of relying on emotions….

Originating in the emotion-driven Charismatic Movement during the 1960s and 1970s, “contemporary Christian music” has now become a regular feature of “worship” services in nearly all local churches. Upon hearing these sounds, people report having “chills” or goosebumps (the technical term is “frisson”). With adrenaline released, an emotional spark or tingly feeling prompts physical reactions—lifting hands, tapping toes, swaying hips, waving arms, jumping, dancing, running, and uttering ecstatically. Although offered as “evidence of the filling of the Spirit,” we are not convinced… for we observe the same movements at nightclubs, worldly concerts, and sporting events (where patrons are “filled with the spirits”). Furthermore, compared to traditional hymns, the lyrics of contemporary Christian music tend to be shallow, the doctrine foolish and false. That means no Holy Spirit is working and God cannot possibly be glorified. Another spirit is at work, and emotions have tricked individuals yet again (“zealously affected, but not well”).

Christendom’s “scholarly elite” further threatens our spiritual welfare. Members of this party have emotional attachments to “church fathers,” seminary professors, and textual critics. They exalt the opinions of men and change the Bible text to agree with what they “think” God meant. Supposedly, God Himself sent them to recover/reconstruct His Bible that He “lost” over the centuries due to an accumulation of manuscript errors. After all, they heard this skeptic’s viewpoint in their “Christian” university classes for years. Now that they have graduated with their humanistic degrees, they pass on such error to us the naïve Christian community (programmed to worship “scholarship” too!). What unbelief (“zealously affected, but not well”)! “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works” (2 Corinthians 11:13-15).

These emotional individuals are in leadership positions in our churches and schools, so indeed be on the lookout for them and promptly flee….

Let us see if we can identify and comprehend the dangers of relying on emotions….

Several years ago, a certain “grace” preacher was a mentor of mine. Another young man he trained became a heretical Bible teacher (imparting bad information to draw disciples to himself). When I informed that preacher of this false teacher, he became so enraged (cf. Galatians 4:16) and accused me of being “full of myself.” Instead of admitting the young man was a liar, this preacher scowled at me and asserted I was “too strict” with my doctrine! Never did I expect that “minister” “friend” (of all people) to attack me that viciously—particularly after he, literally minutes prior, had delivered a sermon about upholding sound doctrine (!). There was definitely no renewed mind or Holy Spirit behind his attitude. I later discovered he had a father–son bond with the false teacher, his emotions inclining him toward the praise of men and away from the praise of God (John 12:42,43). Dear readers, mark it well: no (!) emotional (!) attachment (!) is (!) ever (!) worth (!) retaining (!) or (!) defending (!) the (!) lies (!) of (!) Hell (!)!

God created us as emotional beings; it is therefore impossible to eliminate emotions. Yet, because sin has corrupted them, we should choose not to let them control us. It has taken me 30 years (my entire Christian life) to learn to be more loyal to the Lord Jesus Christ than to people. Whether friendships, romantic relationships, or even familiar ties, these are quite easy to sever if they dishonor my Saviour. I have sat under the ministries of countless false teachers—namely, legalists, Bible correctors, and worldly church leaders. They were dear friends, and though I despise no one, I decided to follow the Lord than follow them. No matter how amiable they were, or educated, or experienced, staying with them was not conducive to my spiritual growth and development. When I saw they had “zealously affected me but not well,” instilling in me a desire to be fervent about their bad doctrine, I had no further company with them, especially after they ignored corrective verses I shared….

A Life That Will Please

Today’s Scripture tells us who alone can live a life pleasing in God’s sight!

Everyone does “good” deeds. Yet, doing “good” is not necessarily good. For instance, people often do “good” just to receive praise/reward, make up for their wrongs, feel good, et cetera. Furthermore, despite our “good” deeds, we have plenty more bad ones! Pride, lying, evil thoughts, being a false witness, and being contentious are some of the things the LORD hates (Proverbs 6:16-19).

Mankind cannot even keep 10 simple rules from God. However, religion continues to urge us to keep seven sacraments, utter various prayers, give assorted offerings and “tithes,” attend numerous feasts and festivals, and perform sundry other tasks to “hopefully” please God and avoid hellfire. Whether we attempt to keep a church’s laws, our laws, or God’s laws, our flesh is far too weak to ever measure up. Just look at what God’s religion did to Israel—how much worse some man-made religion does to us!

As Saul of Tarsus, the Apostle Paul was a Pharisee, a religious leader of Israel. He was a nitpicker concerning Law-keeping, and yet, after his soul salvation, he admitted that all of his religion was “but dung” compared to Jesus Christ’s righteousness (Philippians 3:3-11). Even for the Christian, to live a perfect life is impossible (read of Paul’s miserable existence in Romans chapter 7). Paul had to forsake his vain religion and learn today’s Scripture: the Christian life is NOT the performance of the Christian, but the Lord Jesus Christ living and working in the Christian, as the Christian walks in an intelligent understanding of God’s Word to him or her!

If we trust a Saviour who will save—the Lord Jesus Christ—and trust a Book that will teach—the King James Bible—we can redeem the year for the great God and our Saviour, “who loved [us], and gave himself for [us]!” 🙂
