They Planted, She Watered, But God Gave the Increase

Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12-14 KJV).

A Christian woman, employed at the plant nursery of an older Christian husband and wife, brought her (almost) seven-year-old son to work one summer day. While potting flowers together, the young boy asked, “Mom, how can I be saved?” She gave him the Gospel of Grace: “Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He rose again the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:3,4). Immediately, he believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour… and passed from death to life, Adam to Christ. By the way, that was 25 years ago this month—and that little boy was I!

Growing up, my family and I had been “in and out of” various “Bible” and Baptist churches—forced to leave after heresies corrupted the assemblies. For years, I had attended children’s Sunday school and main services, but I was lost as lost could be. Never can I recall hearing a clear Gospel message… although there was much emphasis on a “sinner’s prayer” and water baptism!! With my Mom, though, I realized my personal lostness and was saved unto eternal life.

As for the aforementioned Christian couple who owned the nursery, the lady died of Alzheimer’s disease several years ago and her husband met her in Heaven just a few years back. The nursery complex, long closed, is but two miles from my home. I pass it often. Someone else lives in the house now. I do remember, a decade ago, walking into that very shed where I was saved unto eternal life. How stirring! For half my Christian life, I did not know how to use the Scriptures rightly divided. Only for the last 13 years have I been a dispensational Bible student. How I came to be saved unto the knowledge of the truth… well… that is for another study! 🙂
