“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29 KJV).
Let us notice the difference between the “secret things” and the “revealed things!”
Aged and dying Moses is addressing Israel one final time. He has restated the Law for those newer generations born during the last 40 years of wilderness wanderings, as well as those no more than age 60, plus Joshua and Caleb who are older. (“Deuteronomy” means “second law.”) They know precisely what the LORD God expects of them as He brings them into the Promised Land under Joshua’s command.
Chapter 30: “[10] If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. [11] For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. [12] It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? [13] Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? [14] But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.”
No matter the dispensation (body of truth) or age (period during which that information is applicable), God has always revealed something intelligible for mankind to believe and obey. When He does unveil a doctrine (a teaching worthy of man’s trust), He expects man to have faith in those Divine words and act accordingly. Such is the case with Israel just prior to entering the Land of Canaan with Joshua. Yet, Moses understood God had not revealed every single detail about what He was doing in creation. These “secret things” were God’s business, and God would choose the proper time to reveal these concepts….
