Lessons from the Biblical Apothecary #4

“And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil” (Exodus 30:25 KJV).

Let us learn some lessons from the biblical apothecary….

Read verses 34-36: “And the LORD said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy: And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy.”

As touching the perfume or incense, it too was a recipe the LORD had invented. Of equal quantities the following “sweet spices” were to be mixed. “Stacte” was sap from various unidentified tree or plant species. “Onycha” was a type of mussel or mollusk shell that emitted an aroma when burned. “Galbanum,” also having an extremely strong odor, was rubbery resin extracted from the roots of a flowering plant native to Afghanistan, Syria, and Persia (Iran). “Frankincense” (Boswellia carteri) was tree sap or bark imported from Saudi Arabia or Ethiopia. This mixture was to burned on the altar of incense in the Tabernacle before the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 30:1-9).

See Exodus 30:1,6-9: “And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it…. And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee. And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it. And when Aaron lighteth the lamps at even, he shall burn incense upon it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations. Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon, nor burnt sacrifice, nor meat offering; neither shall ye pour drink offering thereon.” Any such “strange [foreign] incense,” which God rejected, was produced when the recipe of Exodus 30:34-36 was not followed!

Let us learn some lessons from the biblical apothecary….

Read verses 22-24: “Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:….”

This holy anointing oil was made according to a special recipe the LORD wrote. “Pure myrrh” (Balsamodendron myrrha) was derived from balsam-tree sap imported from Arabia and Ethiopia. Emitting a strong odor, its oily gum hardened upon exposure to air. “Five hundred shekels” (14.5 pounds, or 7 kilograms) of this myrrh were added to half that weight of “sweet cinnamon” (Laurus cinnamomum, laurel tree bark growing in Ceylon and Malaysia). This was added to roughly 7.25 pounds, or 3.5 kilograms, of “sweet calamus” (Acorus calamus, also known as “sweet flag” [an iris-like reed]). Approximately 14.5 pounds or 7 kilograms of “cassia” (flowers or tree bark from India, perhaps Cinnamomum?) and a “hin” (1.5 gallons or 5.7 liters) of “oil olive” were combined to complete the mixture.

“[25] And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. [26] And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, [27] And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, [28] And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. [29] And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. [30] And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.”

Although its ingredients are somewhat enigmatic to us (the species of plant or tree are not always identified), this we do know. The holy anointing oil was used in the Law of Moses to set apart people and instruments unto JEHOVAH God….

“And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil” (Exodus 30:25 KJV).

Let us learn some lessons from the biblical apothecary….

Firstly, what exactly is an “apothecary?” Here are the six pertinent verses from the Authorized Version that shed some light on the subject. “And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil…. And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy:…” (Exodus 30:25,35). “And he made the holy anointing oil, and the pure incense of sweet spices, according to the work of the apothecary” (Exodus 37:29).

“Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour” (Ecclesiastes 10:1). “And they buried him in his own sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and divers kinds of spices prepared by the apothecaries’ art: and they made a very great burning for him” (2 Chronicles 1:14). “Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall” (Nehemiah 3:8).

In ancient times, the apothecary (Greek, “apotheke,” “storehouse”) was someone who prepared and sold spices and/or compounded and sold medicine (drugs, “perfumes,” and “ointments”). The closest modern equivalent to an apothecary is a pharmacist or a very basic physician (treating medical problems, albeit with extremely limited knowledge). Having just come out of Egypt (the Book of Exodus, the context of today’s Scripture), Moses and Israel were quite familiar with this profession. The (advanced) Egyptian people had an abundance of apothecaries, and, doubtless, their herbs and spices (valuables) would have been among the treasures the Egyptians hastily gave the departing Israelites (see Exodus 12:35; Exodus 32:2,3; Exodus 35:22).

Following the practice of the apothecary, Moses was to prepare a holy anointing oil plus perfume or incense for JEHOVAH God….

The LORD Was My Stay

“They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay” (2 Samuel 22:19 KJV).

In what sense does the LORD serve as the Psalmist’s “stay?”

The context of today’s Scripture: “[1] And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: [2] And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; [3] The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. [4] I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. [5] When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; [6] The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me; [7] In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.”

Read verses 8-16, noting their similarity to Deuteronomy 33:1-2, Psalm 68:1-35, 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9, and Revelation 19:11-21, among others. These are all Christ’s Second Coming. (Psalm 18 reproduces 2 Samuel chapter 22.) Continue reading the context of today’s Scripture, along with today’s Scripture: “[17] He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters; [18] He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me. [19] They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay. [20] He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.” The LORD was David’s “stay” in the sense of a support, someone upon whom David could lean or against whom he could be propped up. Paul agrees, “But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead” (2 Corinthians 1:9).

“Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1 KJV).

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

According to the Bible rightly divided, it is not God’s current will to directly intervene in the affairs of man to punish evil, deliver the righteous, and remove the curse of sin from creation. He is neither apathetic, nor cruel, nor nonexistent: instead, He is gracious, merciful, and peaceful toward our human species that has rejected His dear Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) for almost 20 centuries. We should not despise His goodness and/or moan about His plan simply because we do not understand what we ought and have not gotten our way. Far better if we considered the Holy Scriptures dispensationally, find out what He is doing today, by faith do that, and thereby do His will.

Jesus Christ is not where He should be, Satan is not where he should be, the Church the Body of Christ is not where it should be, and the nation Israel is not where it should be. In God’s due time, all will be set right. If we could say it as succinctly as possible: God’s purpose and plan in creation will truly be brought to pass one day, but that cannot happen until redeemed Israel (Earth) and the Church the Body of Christ (Heaven) rule in their respective realms, and this cannot happen until Christ Jesus Himself reigns, which cannot occur until Satan is removed, which cannot happen until Israel is complete, which cannot occur until prophecy resumes, which cannot occur until mystery ends, which cannot transpire until the Body of Christ is closed, which cannot happen until the Dispensation of Grace is rescinded, which cannot be until the Apostle Paul’s ministry is terminated.

“If we suffer, we shall also reign with him…” (2 Timothy 2:12a). We members of the Church the Body of Christ—who have trusted the Lord’s finished crosswork alone as sufficient payment for our sins—understand that this world is not our home. Though this life is rough and tough, God’s grace is sufficient for us to handle all of its problems… all the way up to our departure to be glorified in, and govern, the heavenly places with Christ Himself.

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

Just because God is not doing what we think He should be doing, does not automatically mean He should not be doing it. Moreover, simply because He is not doing it as fast as we think He should be doing it, does not automatically mean He should be doing it at our preferred speed. It is (sinful) human nature to dictate to God what He ought to do and how to do it. He is God, and we are not, but that does not stop us from sitting in judgment of Him (pretending we are the final authority, the sum of knowledge). Instead of complaining, we can open His Holy Bible and read about His purpose and plan for the ages. Yet, it is far easier to plead ignorance (“I do not know!”) and even easier to plead willful ignorance (“I do not care to know!”).

To the shame of the average church member, pastor or preacher, “Bible” teacher, and seminary professor, no solid answers are given from the Scriptures to impart any spiritual light to the non-Christian public (also languishing in darkness). Since the dispensational layout of the Scriptures is overwhelmingly disregarded, even in a great many “churches” and “Christian” schools, it is extremely easy to understand why God’s plan for the ages is unknown to most. God will punish evil and reconcile all governments of Heaven and Earth to Himself, exactly as Colossians 1:16-20 affirms. For now, He is not punishing sinners—but giving them a chance to come to Him by faith in Christ’s finished crosswork on Calvary. Wrath against sin is on its way, but it will not fall as long as Paul’s ministry operates (and God’s attitude toward the world is “grace and peace,” as stated at the beginning of each Pauline epistle, Romans through Philemon).

Let us see exactly what God is doing today—this very day, this very hour, this very second, this very moment—as He forms the Church the Body of Christ….

“Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1 KJV).

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

Read Romans chapter 2: “[3] And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? [4] Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? [5] But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;….” This is God’s “longsuffering” of 2 Peter 3:9,15,16. It was first extended to Saul of Tarsus in Acts chapter 9, and Saul/Paul receiving God’s grace and mercy and peace is the “pattern” for how God deals with this undeserving, Christ-rejecting world now. As God tolerated Saul when he deserved wrath and judgment, so God “long time” puts up with sinners, rebels, unbelievers!

First Timothy chapter 1 is Saul/Paul writing about himself: “[13] Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. [14] And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. [15] This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. [16] Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”

God’s wrath is coming, but it is delayed—and has been postponed for 2,000 years. Why? As Saul was given opportunity to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour (“Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He rose again the third day;” 1 Corinthians 15:3,4), so anyone and everyone can do likewise and also join the Church the Body of Christ before the wrath falls….

“Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1 KJV).

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

Psalm 2 outlines the prophetic program: “[1] Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? [2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, [3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. [4] He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. [5] Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. [6] Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.” After Calvary of verses 1-3 (cf. Acts 4:23-28), there would be Divine wrath (verses 4,5) followed by Christ’s reign (verses 6-9). Stephen foresaw that coming of Christ in wrath (Acts 7:55,56), but it never transpired. Why?

The Apostle Peter penned about Christ’s delayed coming in wrath: “[3] Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, [4] And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation…. [9] The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance…. [15] And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; [16] As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction” (2 Peter 3:3,4,9,15,16).

God kept a secret—especially a coming of Christ un-prophesied by, or unknown to, the Old Testament. This was the hidden coming of Christ to open the Dispensation of Grace in Acts chapter 9 to save and commission Saul/Paul. Let us hear Paul on the subject….

In light of the recent New Orleans terrorist attack just a few hours away from my home, we are delighted to dispel the associated Bible ignorance….

The pain and misery Saul of Tarsus inflicted during Acts chapters 7–9 parallel the suffering and terror of the Psalmist in today’s Scripture (read especially verses 1-11). Typifying the Antichrist of the ages to come, Saul brutally and fanatically oppressed Israel’s believing remnant.

“And Saul was consenting unto [Stephen’s] death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles…. As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling [dragging] men and women committed them to prison” (Acts 8:1,3). “And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem…. Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:…” (Acts 9:1,2,13).

“And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him” (Acts 22:19,20). “I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities” (Acts 26:9-11). “For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:…” (Galatians 1:13).
