“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word” (Psalm 119:9 KJV).
If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?
Generation Y (Millennials [my generation]; born 1981–1996), Generation Z (born 1997–2012), Generation Alpha (born 2013–2025), and Generation Beta (born 2025–present) face unique challenges about which prior generations know nothing. They have grown up (are growing up) during a time of unbelievably rapid technological advancements—greater dependence on personal computers, cellular phones, and social media. With easier access to cameras, the number of “selfies” has increased, meaning people have fallen in love with taking photos of themselves. Growing reliance on text-messaging has led to the breakdown of correct spelling and proper grammar. Profitable work has been replaced with mindless entertainment (games, videos, and so on).
While helpful to a degree, interaction with others via the internet is fraught with disadvantages. Since online activities can be undertaken anonymously, the likelihood of fakery (pretend, fantasy), superficiality (shallowness), and theatricality (dramatic attention-seekers) rises exponentially. With the advent of artificial intelligence, videos can be effortlessly doctored and texts can be greatly altered. Millions of gullible people have been fooled thereby.
Here are helpful tips, especially for young people. Make wise decisions online. If you have any doubts about posting certain comments or pictures or videos, it is best to reconsider and post nothing. Do not become so desperate for acceptance and praise that you do or say practically anything to gain an internet audience. Guard your privacy. Though online platforms have little history, researchers are beginning to identify related health risks. Be careful to limit your social media activity, as prolonged usage (addiction) has harmful psychological, emotional, and social effects.
“Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly [looking around, cautiously, prudently], not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time [buying back the time for God’s glory, which time sin and Satan have taken], because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:14-17).
There is yet more to learn….
