God’s Profaned Name #5

Saturday, August 12, 2023

“And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes” (Ezekiel 36:23 KJV).

How was God’s great name “profaned among the heathen?” In what way will He “sanctify” it?

The word “name” denotes all that the person, place, or thing is. For example, read Exodus 34:5-7: “And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”

When the LORD proclaimed the name of the LORD, it was not God repeating over and over, “The LORD! The LORD! The LORD!” No, rather, it was an enumeration or listing of everything the LORD was and is—He is full of mercy, grace, longsuffering, goodness, truth, and so on. These are His attributes, characteristics, or traits. All that He stands for, all that He does, all that He believes is wrapped up in His great name.

Once Israel officially became the LORD’S nation coming out of Egypt and the Red Sea, whatever they did would either exalt the LORD’S name (righteous living) or tarnish it (sinful living). Unfortunately, like all sinners, they were not perfect, so the (Mosaic) Covenant of Law was doomed right from the start. God knew it, but they refused to accept it. When their evil deeds finally resulted in eviction from the Promised Land (a poor reflection of JEHOVAH God’s name), they continued their sinful acts in the Gentiles’ lands (another poor reflection of JEHOVAH God’s name). In the eyes of the non-Jews, the God of Israel (the one true God) was no different from their idols. Israel so miserably (!) failed (!) to be God’s light to the world, but God in His faithfulness will accomplish His will in the Earth through Israel regardless….

After Israel’s departure from Egypt, her people chose to enter a covenant relationship with the LORD God: “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel…. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD” (Exodus 19:5,6,8). Obedience would bring blessings, but disobedience would merit curses, as elaborated on later in Leviticus chapter 26 and Deuteronomy chapter 28.

True to His promise to remove the Jewish people from the Promised Land because of their habitual violation of the Law of Moses, the LORD God meted out the fifth and final course of chastisement or judgment (see Leviticus 26:27-39; Deuteronomy 28:62-65; cf. Leviticus 18:24-28; Leviticus 20:22-24). Now, as this curse took effect, the land of Palestine would be vacant, with the Israelites exiled or scattered to Assyria (north) and Babylonia (east).

Nevertheless, the LORD God states in today’s Scripture how the Jewish people continued their evil ways outside of Palestine. As they lived amongst the heathen or Gentiles, the Israelites were not reflections of the Creator’s will. When the nations observed this nonsense, they could not help but snicker and mock. Instead of, “What a wise and understanding people” (Deuteronomy 4:6), it was “What a foolish and clueless people!” Israel did not walk in her identity the LORD gave her coming out of Egypt (separation from sin, Satan, and the world). She wanted to be like everyone else—and she indeed thought and acted like everyone else.

Israel “profaned” the name of the LORD in this manner….

When He brought them out of Egyptian bondage, the LORD had indeed taken the nation Israel unto Himself, making them His special people in the Earth: He had “sanctified” them, “hallowed” them, or set them apart positionally. Consequently, they were to be “holy” practically—in their daily living. As He was isolated from the gods and goddesses of the Gentiles (idols), so the Jews were to be separated from the Gentiles (nations). “…I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people” (Leviticus 20:24). “And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine” (Leviticus 20:26). This is why He gave Israel “unusual” laws to obey and “strange” rules to observe.

By watching the Israelites conduct themselves according to the Creator’s will, the Gentiles (without that one true God) were to be impressed and interested. See Moses’ advice to Israel in Deuteronomy 4:5-8: “Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?”

Nevertheless, because of sin, there was an adverse reaction to what the LORD had spoken to Israel….

Read these words from the LORD through Moses to Israel: “Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you: (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled; ) That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you” (Leviticus 18:24-28).

Also, chapter 20: “[22] Ye shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, spue you not out. [23] And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them. [24] But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people. [25] Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: and ye shall not make your souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creepeth on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean. [26] And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.”

This theme of separation or severance connects to today’s Scripture….

The King James Bible has its own built-in system of terms and definitions. While a (manmade) dictionary can be helpful, the senses of Bible words must always be restricted to a Scriptural meaning—the context (verse, chapter, or individual Book within the Bible). For example, consider the term “profanity.” Due to common knowledge, we understand this to mean foul, disrespectful, or offensive words. Yet, this offers us little assistance in reading today’s Scripture for all its worth. In Ezekiel here, we see how someone has “profaned” God’s name, and how He reacts, but what is this matter all about anyway?

We start reading in Ezekiel chapter 36 (the context of today’s Scripture): “[20] And when they entered unto the heathen, whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land. [21] But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went. [22] Therefore say unto the house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name’s sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went. [23] And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes. [24] For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.”

The above excerpt not only explains the occasion in which God’s name was “profaned,” but also how He will “sanctify” it….

“And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever” (2 Samuel 7:12,13 KJV).

Let us search the Scriptures to see how Solomon is a type of the antitype Jesus….

Whether Psalm 72, Psalm 89, or Psalm 132, we find hints of both Solomon (immediately) and Jesus (ultimately) fulfilling the Davidic Covenant (cf. today’s Scripture). Solomon typifies the Lord Jesus in at least 13 particulars. Both are sons of David and both are heirs to his throne. Solomon and Jesus are shepherds. They are both kings. Each possesses and expresses God’s wisdom. Solomon and Jesus are both highly exalted and materially prosperous. Peace, the end of war, is the hallmark of each kingdom. Judgment and justice or righteousness highlight their reigns. Both monarchs have worldwide fame and influence. The Gentiles or non-Jews bring physical wealth to honor both Solomon and Christ.

King Solomon and King Jesus each build houses for the LORD (Father God), Solomon erecting a physical structure (Jerusalem Temple) and Jesus forming a spiritual building (Israel’s Little Flock or believing remnant; Luke 12:32). Solomon’s intimate relationship with his sexually-pure wife represents Christ’s union to Israel’s spiritually-pure Little Flock at His Second Coming and subsequent earthly kingdom.

Jesus Christ declared, “The queen of the south [Queen of Sheba] shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here” (Matthew 12:42; cf. Luke 11:31). This “greater than Solomon” is (superior) King Jesus Christ Himself—whom unbelieving Israel refuses to hear and believe in Matthew to John! Messiah Jesus and His kingdom miracles are connected to “Solomon’s Porch” in John 10:23, Acts 3:11, and Acts 5:12. This portico or covered walkway of the Jerusalem Temple again relates Christ Jesus’ kingdom (antitype) to Solomon’s kingdom (type). Had Israel been trusting their Old Testament Scriptures, they would have seen these striking similarities and accepted Jesus as Messiah (David’s Son) instead of crucifying Him in unbelief (John 19:14-16)!

King Solomon “…spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five” (1 Kings 4:32). Some of these witty sayings, obviously, have been preserved for us in the Bible Book of Proverbs (God’s wisdom as expressed through Solomon). As for his songs, we have one of them too—the Bible Book known as “Song of Solomon.” “The song of songs, which is Solomon’s” (Song of Solomon 1:1).

Song of Solomon is a love poem, graphically recounting Solomon and his wife as they courted, wed, and enjoyed married life. Although he eventually had 1,000 lovers (see 1 Kings 11:3), his original romantic relationship was likely with Naamah (mother of his son, Rehoboam; see 2 Chronicles 12:13). Interestingly, before he was a king, Solomon was a shepherd (Song of Solomon 1:7), matching Jesus Christ who is both Shepherd (Psalm 23:1; John 10:14; 1 Peter 2:25) and King (Luke 1:31-33; Acts 2:30; Revelation 19:16).

Nevertheless, once Solomon abandoned God’s wisdom (Proverbs), he participated in Satan’s evil world system (Ecclesiastes—life apart from the LORD God). Recall his downfall of 1 Kings 11:1-8. Here, Solomon represents the Antichrist, another apostate and idolatrous Israeli king, future from us (see Daniel 8:23-25). As Solomon fashioned a chair for himself by counterfeiting God’s white judgment throne (1 Kings 10:18-20; 2 Chronicles 9:17-19; cf. Revelation 20:11), connecting himself to the number “six” (man’s number), so the Antichrist will sit in the Temple’s Mercy Seat pretending to be God (see Daniel 11:36,37; 2 Thessalonians 2:4) and associating himself with “666” (Revelation 13:16-18)!

Song of Solomon accentuates sexual purity. Solomon’s first wife epitomizes Israel’s believing remnant (Christ’s bride; Hosea 2:14-23) adopting Proverbs’ wisdom, who thereby avoids the spiritual fornication (diabolical, idolatrous religion) of the Antichrist (Ecclesiastes). The true King, Jesus Christ, is approaching for His marriage (Matthew 22:1-14; Matthew 25:1-13; Revelation 19:7-9), exactly like Solomon was en route with his true love expecting him (Song of Solomon 8:14; cf. Revelation 22;17,20)!

The (Gentile) Queen of Sheba “…gave [Solomon] the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices very great store, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon” (1 Kings 10:10). “And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and armour, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year” (1 Kings 10:24,25).

Psalm 72 has a dual application. Firstly, as its subtitle indicates, it is “A Psalm for Solomon.” Notice verses 10 and 11: “The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts. Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.” Secondly, this points to Jesus Christ, for all nations will serve Him. Gentiles give material riches as presents to Solomon and Christ. Recall the Gentile wise men bearing gifts for the Christ Child in Matthew 2:11.

Isaiah chapter 60 describes the Lord Jesus Christ’s literal, physical, visible, earthly, Davidic, Israeli kingdom in the ages to come, when Gentiles are attracted to the LORD and the Jewish people (as was the Gentile Queen of Sheba!). “And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising…. Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee. The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; all they from Sheba [!] shall come: they shall bring gold and incense; and they shall shew forth the praises of the LORD” (verses 3,5,6).

Still, there is more….

While King David was celebrated, comparatively speaking, he was more of a “local hero,” for it was by means of King Solomon that the Davidic throne gained international attention and admiration. Observe: “And king Solomon passed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, that God had put in his heart” (2 Chronicles 9:22,23). Again, this hints at the Lord Jesus’ reign in the ages to come.

Read 1 Kings 10:1-9 (cf. 2 Chronicles 9:1-8). This Queen of Sheba was likely from Yemen, some 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) south of Jerusalem. Far away from the land of Israel, she nevertheless heard of an extremely clever and tremendously wealthy Jewish king. Therefore, she set out on a long journey to see if those rumors were true. When she views Solomon’s kingdom firsthand and meets with him personally, the Bible tells us “there was no more spirit in her” (1 Kings 10:5). She is in such disbelief, such shock, she was liable to faint or perhaps undergo cardiac arrest! Her response is, “Behold, the half was not told me!” All the stories she overheard about him, his empire, and its furnishings were much too inadequate to serve as accurate descriptions. “Thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard” (verse 7).

The Queen of Sheba remarks to Solomon: “Blessed be the LORD thy God, which delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, to be king for the LORD thy God: because thy God loved Israel, to establish them for ever, therefore made he thee king over them, to do judgment and justice” (2 Chronicles 9:8). Once more, it loops to the Christ Jesus’ future reign in Israel….

As peace prevailed with Solomon, so it will with Christ’s kingdom. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this” (Isaiah 9:6,7). Christ Jesus fulfills the Davidic Covenant as delineated in Psalms, “peace” again linking Christ to Solomon.

“Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both” (Zechariah 6:13). This is Christ’s Second Coming. Also, Zechariah 9:10: “And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth” (His First Coming is verse 9; cf. Matthew 21:4,5).

As touching Jesus’ birth, Luke 2:11-14: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” This “peace on earth”—world peace—will not be possible until Christ’s return.

There are yet other ways Solomon corresponds to Christ….
