“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word” (Psalm 119:9 KJV).
If our physical posterity could augment its spiritual dexterity, exactly what would that entail?
Read Jeremiah 32:29: “And the Chaldeans, that fight against this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger.” Disobeying the Law of Moses through centuries of idolatry, the Kingdom of Judah and its capital city of Jerusalem eventually fell to Babylonian troops roughly 600 B.C. Little by little, Israel had compromised with the very evil world system out of which the LORD had called them when He under Moses’ command redeemed them from Egyptian bondage. The Davidic dynasty thus came to a violent, tragic end.
Similarly, the Church the Body of Christ at Corinth had been sanctified, set apart unto God’s purposes. They trusted the Gospel of Grace when Paul preached there back in Acts chapter 18 (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Before they had ever heard anything about Jesus Christ from him, these Corinthians—some of whom had attended synagogue services, reading and hearing pertinent Old Testament verses—were familiar with the sacred banquets of world religions. Some had doubtless even participated in them. The ancient Greeks, the ancient Romans, and the ancient Egyptians, among other peoples, held special feasts to worship their respective gods and goddesses (mere reiterations of what they inherited from their ancestors at the Tower of Babel in Genesis chapter 11). Israel became involved with them too, as did the Corinthian believers, even after receiving revelation from the living and true God. This “syncretism”—blending of religions—has plagued and polluted God’s people for millennia.
It is an extremely complex subject because it spans thousands of years. To the common man, the lie’s modern form is practically indistinguishable from the truth. Almost no one perceives, or even cares to see (!), the details that pinpoint what is worship of the Lord and what is worship of the Devil. Let us see when, where, and how the Lord’s Supper was instituted….
