Only by God’s grace, we celebrate a ministry milestone today!
Recently, my high-school class had its 20-year reunion near the on-campus stadium. During the homecoming football game, we ate delicious food and reminisced about the “good old days,” sharing memories of all kinds—wonderful, comical, and tragic. (Other alumni going as far back as 50 years were scattered on the grounds doing likewise that night for eight hours!)
We remembered our three late classmates. Also, we updated each other as to what we have been doing since graduation. Professions represented at our reunion were predominantly education, plus some military, medical, and energy. Considering our errant generation, we turned out to be fairly decent individuals—and we expressed our shock with one another that we are now even old enough to have children who have graduated high school themselves! We lamented the changes our world and school system have undergone in the two decades since we last assembled on that campus. Additionally, we notified one another of the current whereabouts of our instructors: some have died, others have retired, still others have moved to other schools, but two are still working there as they were when we graduated.
One of us is a mathematics teacher at our high school. After celebrating a decade there, she desired to leave some months ago (because of internal friction), but her students convinced her to stay for another year. At our reunion, I encouraged her to keep going, for she could never fully comprehend the effect she was having on those children. She might be the only “parent” some of them will ever know. How she appreciated those comments! The Christian worker finds himself or herself in a similar predicament. At times, it looks like it just is not worth going on as a believer in Jesus Christ because of the “low pay,” “no pay,” “intense hostility,” and other negative feedback. Yet, the Word of God prospers, being glorified with the wise and the just. Beloved, for 5,600 consecutive days now, well over 15 years, we have followed today’s Scripture by faith, presenting one Bible study after another after another. May we continue to do so! Onward to devotional #5700! 🙂
